ELCA Pastor Brings Words of Promise to Wichita Congregations 09-129-FI
CHICAGO (ELCA) -- "Attitude is everything" was a phrase that Dr. George Tiller had made into buttons. Many mourners wore those buttons to his funeral June 6 at College Hill United Methodist Church, Wichita, Kan. Tiller was shot and killed the previous Sunday morning before worship at nearby Reformation Lutheran Church, where he was a member.
"Attitude is everything but not our attitude," said the Rev. Lowell R. Michelson, Tiller's pastor, during the funeral sermon. "God's attitude an attitude of love."
"God does not turn away from our lives when things go bad. In fact, God leans in all the more and tilts with unconditional love in our favor. It is bold to stare death in the face with such an attitude," he said.
"The life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ changes us and the world. We know that death doesn't have the last word. It isn't the end of the story. It is only the beginning."
Reformation is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Tiller, 67, was serving as an usher the morning he was slain in the foyer of the church. He was one of a few doctors in the United States who provided abortions after the 21st week of pregnancy. A suspect has been charged with Tiller's murder.
At the funeral Michelson spoke after Tiller's four children and a longtime friend shared personal stories about the doctor.
"Years from now," Michelson told Tiller's family, "people will remember less the details of the crime committed, and the flurry of attention this week has received, and much more the steady way with which you have handled that lump of sorrow that sticks in your heart and your throat -- a pain none of us can imagine."
Michelson had similar words of promise when the congregation of Reformation returned to worship June 7.
"Our sanctuary has been violated. A place of safety and trust became something other. As we face this hour and the days and weeks ahead, we ask God to grant us courage," he said.
"It is only through the power of God that we can begin to heal," Michelson said. "Like a Kansas sunflower tilting toward the sun, like a parent leaning over to hug a weeping child, God bends in love toward us. The love of Jesus is stronger than the darkness of this time."

A very ironic phrase--indeed, a downright perverse phrase-- to use in the Funeral homily for someone who would offer to "baptize" the preborn infants he had just killed through abortion.
Glory to the Holy Trinity!
The MSM treats Tiller like he was a saint. He was a mass murderer.
Isaiah 5:20 “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil.”

Where the people rule not G-d.
Tiller's attitude ... an attitude willing to kill an innocent child for $5000, and to do it again, and again, and again, and again ...
A place of sanctuary--like a mother's womb which also has been violated. These truly are perverse people.
Do these people know how ridiculous they sound?
Like the banality of evil...
Words escape me. There is nothing that can describe this left-wing political organization masquerading as a “Christian Church”!
15but in case I am delayed, I write so that you will know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth. 1 Tm 3
The elca is neither pillar nor support of the truth. They have become a secular social agency.
Worse, he was a renowned abortionist when the church admitted him to membership. He was previously excommunicated by the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod.
This is hideous-presumption at its worst. The scriptures warn that God hates all workers of iniquity. It goes almost without saying that a proudly unrepentent abortionist is a "worker of iniquity" and is in grave danger of the just wrath of God, both here and in the world to come.
What a dreadful little hidden reef this church is. I wonder how many other unrepentant sinners are lazing cozily and unchallenged under this pastors teaching?
This blurb was sent out by the national ELCA news service? Thank God that I left the ELCA last year, and went home to the Orthodox Church!!!!
Please y’all, learn about the relationship between the Lutheran Reformers and the Orthodox Church, the history of the Orthodox West, etc. And experience Orthodox worship (in English) for yourself.
The Orthodox Church is your true home! Your current “church home” is collapsing around you. Time to get out of there and go to your real home.
This pro-death pastor is no more ridiculous, posing as a “Christian,” than Archbishop Donald Wuerl, of Washington, who refuses to admit that pro-abortion “Catholic” politicians are public sinners, and insists that they should receive Communion.
How many times did Tiller violate the sanctuary of the womb, with deadly intent and violent acts?
What a false and misleading shepherd is that “pastor.” What is the reward for leading the sheep astray??
Ezekiel 34 has some answers:
Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: As I live, says the Lord God, because my sheep have become a prey, and my sheep have become food for all the wild animals, since there was no shepherd; and because my shepherds have not searched for my sheep, but the shepherds have fed themselves, and have not fed my sheep; therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: Thus says the Lord God, I am against the shepherds; and I will demand my sheep at their hand, and put a stop to their feeding the sheep; no longer shall the shepherds feed themselves. I will rescue my sheep from their mouths, so that they may not be food for them.
No, I don’t think they really do. It’s called deception.
So far, I'm extremely happy in my LCMS. We left the apostate ELCA more than 15 years ago.
