How Old Is Your Church?

How Old Is Your Church?

If you are a Lutheran, your religion was founded by Martin Luther, an ex- monk of the Catholic Church, in the year 1517.

If you belong to the Church of England, your religion was founded by King Henry VIII in the year 1534 because the Pope would not grant him a divorce with the right to remarry.

If you are a Presbyterian, your religion was founded by John Knox in Scotland in the year 1560.

If you are a Protestant Episcopalian, your religion was an offshoot of the Church of England founded by Samuel Seabury in the American colonies in the 17th century.

If you are a Congregationalist, your religion was originated by Robert Brown in Holland in 1582.

If you are a Methodist, your religion was launched by John and Charles Wesley in England in 1744.

If you are a Unitarian, Theophilus Lindley founded your church in London in 1774.

If you are a Mormon (Latter Day Saints), Joseph Smith started your religion in Palmyra, N.Y., in 1829.

If you are a Baptist, you owe the tenets of your religion to John Smyth, who launched it in Amsterdam in 1605.

If you are of the Dutch Reformed church, you recognize Michaelis Jones as founder, because he originated your religion in New York in 1628.

If you worship with the Salvation Army, your sect began with William Booth in London in 1865.

If you are a Christian Scientist, you look to 1879 as the year in which your religion was born and to Mrs. Mary Baker Eddy as its founder.

If you belong to one of the religious organizations known as 'Church of the Nazarene," "Pentecostal Gospel." "Holiness Church," "Pilgrim Holiness Church," "Jehovah's Witnesses," your religion is one of the hundreds of new sects founded by men within the past century.

If you are Catholic, you know that your religion was founded in the year 33 by Jesus Christ the Son of God, and it is still the same Church.

It was indeed but the idea that the bloated corrupt Catholic Church of 1517 greatly resembled the early church is laughable.

Why focus on the Baptists? The article paints all non-Roman churches with the same brush.

Winter IS correct — we in The Church need to have a stronger reading of our faith, we should not be satisfied with raising cultural catholics

I personally think that thou dost protest a bit too much.

Not a single one of these websites are Catholic. Yet every one of them have the founding date of their church.

Your argument is with each denomination.

My point is, why only Catholics? What about the Methodists or the Calvinists? Why only Catholics?

The Church in 1517 DOCTRINALLY resembled the earliest Church yes. Organizationally? In a way (that Christ was and is the Head of The Church), yes. however, do you seriously expect a group of churches with no connection to withstand the arian lombards and Visigoths, the pagan Franks and Vikings and the Muslim Saracens? No, of course not, in that sense, they coulnd’t be politically the same resemblance

All Protestant churches have their foundation in Christ. The men were merely responsible for much needed reform.

Thank you!

Now I understand that this article is from EWTN, but each of these churches will tell it’s founding date.

Yes, the doctrine in which each is founded stated with Christ himself but the churches started on certain dates.

Personally, I am Catholic and I love my Protestant and Jewish Brothers and Sisters. I want all the infighting to stop.

no focus on Baptists — other groups had founders who considered that everyone before them didn’t know the right thing.

You think so? But what about that passage in Acts, where Paul and Barnabas are out selling indulgences...

Once I began a thread devoted to learning about other people’s religions without the bashing. It was an extremely small thread.

You knowledge the history of these groups is completely distorted. Read something that wasn’t published by Vatican Press.

It doesn’t have to be a Catholic either and it isn’t just Catholics.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I completely agree.

Hopefully, you have seen my many posts urging Christians ( Protestant and Catholic) to get their children out of the atheistic government K-12 schools. Hopefully you have seen my posts stating that a Christian's ( Protestant and Catholic) **most** important mission is his **own** children. He second most important mission is the children of his congregation or parraish.

So, Henry VIII was responsible for a reform. Then Luther was also responsible for his reform, but that was separate from Calvins reform. finally, from Henry’s reform you had the Wesleys with THEIR reform and then of course the Baptists with their version of reforming, then Christian Scientists etc

Ok, great. You have a problem with indulgences. Good news — The Church doesn’t do that now. So, when are you starting your CAthecism classes?

Paul wrote in Romans 3.

7 For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie unto his glory; why yet am I also judged as a sinner?

8 And not rather, (as we be slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say,) Let us do evil, that good may come? whose damnation is just.

9 What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;

10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.

12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
