1 Dead, More Injured in Church Bus Accident Near Meridain
Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobbler says that one person was killed, and two people were airlifted to Jackson after a church bus overturned on the Interstate near Meridian today. The accident happened near mile marker 169 on Interstate 20/59. It involved a youth group from First Baptist Church in Shreveport, Louisiana. 26 of the 27 people aboard the bus had to be taken to one of the three Meridian hospital ER's for treatment.
One of the injured was airlifted straight from the scene to University Medical Center in Jackson with severe pelvic and femur injuries. Another was airlifted to UMC from Anderson Hospital with severe head injuries.
We also understand that a group of National Guardsmen who happened to be driving by the scene helped to rescue some of the injured.
Many parents of the youth are on their way to Meridian right now to be with their children. FBC Shreveport's web site quotes the church's pastor, Dr. Greg Hunt, as saying,
The church's complete statement can be found at http://www.fbcshreveport.org/.
The youth were on their way to a week-long event in Macon, Georgia.
More details as they become available. We're still waiting on information from the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
The location given is close to Kewanee, Mississippi near the Highway 11 and Highway 80 exit off Interstate 20/59, just a few miles west of the Alabama State line.
Prayers for the child and family. God give them peace. Also prayers for the rest of the children who were injured. Hope and pray everyone of them recovers.
Excellent facility! This is terrible news.
My prayers for the families.
At least two passengers were trapped underneath the bus. A group of National Guard soldiers was on the highway at the time and helped extricate the injured.
God Bless the Guard!
I'm not clear on the location. Hwy 80 and 11 cross I-20 near Meehan Junction. Is this the correct locastion?
RIP and prayers for the victims.
Logan’s Prayer Warriors AND trussell’s prayer list.....
