A ransom is a payment to free a captive. Whose captivity is a sinner in? He is in captivity to sin itself.
The sacrifice of blood is to cover sin. The sacrifice of the blood of Christ covers all sin. Thus, he ransoms us from our own sin and the captivity that it holds over us.
The vengeance that God will bring at the end of time, and that he spills out occasionally at other times, is against those that fight against him. The punishment I was talking of is not the same as the vengeance of God. The tossing into the lake of fire at the end of all judgment is the removal from the presence of God for eternity. This is not something that God has prepared for us (Matthew 25:41), but something that we can obtain by our refusal to accept God's grace and sacrifice.
