Vatican could convert Lefebvrists into personal prelature, says Fellay

Santiago, Chile, Oct 22, 2009 / 01:03 pm (CNA).- In an interview with the Chilean daily, “El Mercurio,” the Superior General of the Society of St. Pius X, Bernard Fellay, acknowledged that the Vatican is considering the possibility of converting the Lefebvrist group into a personal prelature as part of the discussions aimed at bringing about reconciliation. Fellay, who visited members of the SSPX movement in Chile, is one of four bishops whose excommunication was lifted by Pope Benedict XVI last January. Asked about the speculation that the Society of Pius X could be made into a personal prelature similar to Opus Dei, Fellay responded, “There is a lot of truth to that. I think the Vatican is moving towards that kind of canonical solution.”

He also noted that the controversy unleashed by Bishop Richard Williamson’s statements on the Nazi holocaust “was a well-planned attack, not against the Society, but directly against the person of Pope Benedict XVI, in order to tarnish his gesture.”

I was thinking about the SSPX late this afternoon, oddly enough.

Well, Benedict XVI seems to be very much the shepherd trying to gather the sheep. I wonder what will happen with this.

Did a headache accompany those thoughts? I think I know a person or two who get sick to their stomachs when they think of the SSPX!

Do they get as sick as when they think of clown Masses and OCP pop slop?

It’s more like herding cats.

Oh, yes, and throw in some illicit tribunal like activities, and possibly invalid weddings and confessions on the part of the SSPX and you could put someone in the hospital. Add in a broken up family where the parents no longer hear from their kid and are not allowed to visit their grandkids who are SSPX adherents (even though everyone involved, including grandma and grandpa goes exclusively to the Latin Mass) and you can have terrible heart ache. Seen it first hand.

What do these unfortunate family problems have to do with the SSPX or the Church in general?
I have seen a plethora of illicit (and possibly invalid) Masses and weddings in my own and nearby dioceses.
As for confessions, quite a few padres out the do not use the approved form.

At least as much as clown Masses and OCP music.

“I have seen a plethora of illicit (and possibly invalid) Masses and weddings in my own and nearby dioceses.

That’s not the issue. SSPX priests have no faculties to hear confessions in every day life. I suppose they can hear them at a time when someone is in fear of death, but otherwise not. Yet, those SSPX priests are illicitly hearing confessions all the time. That’s a problem on several levels.

I think they would argue the faculties issue. The most common confession formula I have heard in the past 40 years is “Go you are forgiven.” That is a long way from “Ego te absolvo a peccatis tuis...”

How can SSPX padres control whether or not parents get along with their adult children any more than any other religious leader?
There are situations like you describe among folks in any religious tradition.

It’s not about control. It’s about teaching and responsibility.

“There are situations like you describe among folks in any religious tradition.”

No, there aren’t. This situation happened because a young woman who never knew anything but the Latin Mass (nothing wrong with that!) married an SSPXer. The SSPXers she then began to associate with convinced her she should break contact with her parents because they weren’t really Catholic enough because they were not SSPXers. Among many Pius Xers there is a “We are the only real Church” attitude. I’ve have experienced this myself first hand.
