Revisiting Bishop Morinís Memo Regarding Our CCHD Campaign (Catholic Alert!)
Bellarmineveritasministry ^ | November 6, 2009

The heart and purpose of this ministry is to provide Catholics with concrete means of dealing with spiritual and temporal problems facing us as individuals and the Church as a whole.

Our goal is to provide plans of action to address these issues in a humble, obedient and effective manner.

National Campaigns:

Addressing the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) – Catholics contribute to this national collection every November. A number of the groups funded by the CCHD openly support abortion, same-sex marriage and contraception. Our goal is to have the troublesome groups removed from the grant list and encourage the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) to provide better oversight.

On October 2nd, Bishop Roger Morin, Chairman of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) Subcommittee released a memo in response to our initial report concerning the CCHD. As we reported on Oct. 8 in our initial response to Bishop Morin, three grantees listed in our CCHD report were stripped of funding and two others were investigated and cleared by the USCCB for further funding.

Bishop Morin stated:

Two other groups named in the original story were investigated and, in consultation with the local dioceses, the charges proved to be inaccurate or a misunderstanding had occurred. (source: Memorandum issued by Bishop Morin to US Bishops, Oct. 2nd, 2009)

The two CCHD grantees in question are LA CAN and the Womens Community Revitalization Project. We have yet to hear an adequate explanation as to how our initial presentation regarding these two groups was flawed, and now have further evidence to support our charge that the Womens Community Revitalization Project (WCRP) should be immediately stripped of all funding by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development.

In early 2009, the WCRP received a grant totaling $16,400 from the Philadelphia based organization Women’s Way. (Source: Women’s Way web-site) Women’s Way, like many organizations which give grants, has a strict policy in place as to what manner of organizations are eligible for grants.

This policy includes the following:

What WOMEN’S WAY is NOT Interested in Funding
WOMEN’S WAY seeks applications that support our mission. The following types of organizations and projects conflict with our values and funding philosophy and would not be considered.

  • Organizations that consider themselves to be pro-life
  • Organizations and projects that do not support a woman’s full range of reproductive choices
  • Organizations and projects promoting abstinence-only sex education
  • Organizations and projects opposing same sex relationships or marriage (Emphasis present in original. Source: Women’s Way web-site)

Therefore, if the Womens Community Revitalization Project is eligible for this grant from Women’s Way, by definition they are ineligible for funding by the CCHD.

Please keep this in mind on November 22, the date of the CCHD national collection. Unless the CCHD removes WCRP from the grants list, a portion of your CCHD donation may very well go to the WCRP. Also, this highlights the need for reform in the CCHD grants process. WCRP not only cleared the initial screening to receive CCHD funding, but was also cleared for continued funding after the investigation by the CCHD following our initial report.

About the Bellarmine Veritas Ministry

We are a Catholic grass-roots organizing ministry dedicated to truth and action. Unlike community organizing groups which bring men together to create faceless political power and revolution, we recognize the inherent dignity of each person created by God and seek to bring people out of isolation and darkness in order that we can work together to build up ourselves and our Church. We do not strive to create power as all true power comes from God alone. Instead, we seek to instill the fearless hope that comes from walking in light and truth.

We believe and hold all the doctrines of the Church, and are loyal and obedient to the Magisterium.

For those who may have missed it, EWTN's Raymond Arroyo interviewed the founder of Bellarmine Veritas Ministry on last night's The World Over program. The ministry is run by one brave Catholic who has taken on the CCHD campaign to provide you with an accounting of where your donations are directed. It was MOST illuminating!

The annual CCHD collection will be taken on November 22. I have taken the liberty of posting most of the background information from the Bellarmine web site. I would encourage you to visit the site and examine the findings yourself. Below, I have placed the link to the USCCB web site with their initial response to Bellarmine ministry. Since that posting, additional information has been discovered and is available on the Bellarmine web site. Know where your contributions are spent!.

For more information on the CCHD, visit their website which is part of the USCCB website and check out what they fund. There are complete lists for the last few years available. In fundraising, we always look at this. It tells more about a grantmaking institution than anything else.

Actually, it doesn't. That is what Bellarmine Ministry discovered when they did some research on those organizations. Some support gay marriage, others provide counseling on family planning and yet another supports women priests. This information has been brought to the attention of the program directors and they have held a conference call with the founder but have not yet taken action on removing those agencies from their grant list.

This is an important endeavor so thanks for recognizing it. SUPPORT THEM as well as others such as the Catholic Media Coalition, and Richard Viguerre’s efforts. A few years back i began surfing the USCCB website and was stunned to learn what its ‘social justice’ program supports both directly and through its funding arm the CCHD. In researching and writing about this mess I have become all the more alarmed by the USCCB’s so called ‘social justice’ agenda. It is radical supporting cap and trade, bail outs, the fannie/freddie may fiasco and other such nonsense. Check out for example the Gamiliel website, a Marxist/Alinski group, bragging about its graduate Obama and its “alliance with the CCHD.” These people are engaged in endless mischief and they maintain close ties to the democrats through the likes of Alexia Kelly, John Carr, Kathy Sailes, et al. The CCHD and statists at the USCCB have a very real and dangerous agenda. Write your bishops and protest loudly in addition to refusing to fund this ugliness.

Somebody ought to check out Catholic Charities next. I can’t walk by the archdiocese without smelling the corruption there.
