Hell is not the kind of thing that we would make up in order to alleviate the hardships of this life. Why? Because hell is worse than sickness and hell is even worse than death. So hell doesnt fit very nicely into Freuds wish-fulfillment scheme.,
Sure it does. Our sense of justice would be unfulfilled if great evil-doers got to enjoy heaven just like people who were good. And while Christianity teaches that forgiveness is possible for even great evil-doers, it requires true repentance and acknowledgement of the evil, and accepting that Somebody Else volunteered to pay the price.
If Hitler and Stalin and casual tormenters and murderers could just waltz into heaven, it would rankle us horribly on earth.
