Pope's Policies 'Theologically Eccentric', Says Head of Blissfully United Anglican Communion
The Daily Telegraph (UK) ^ | 12/12/09 | Damian Thompson

So Archbishop Rowan Williams reckons that the Pope’s Apostolic Constitution for ex-Anglicans is “theologically eccentric”.

You can see his point. Much better to adopt a clear-cut, rational approach to the problem by allowing parishes to refuse to recognise the orders of the local woman diocesan bishop and neighbouring women vicars by supplying them with the oversight of a male bishop who himself rejects women’s orders but is in full communion with a primate who heads an international communion divided into an inner tier of provinces which obey a moratorium on ordaining gay bishops and an outer tier of provinces not in communion with the inner tier which do ordain gay bishops, both tiers also being internally divided between parishes which do and do not accept women’s orders and also disagree fundamentally on central questions of doctrine such as the nature of Christ’s presence in the eucharist, this difficulty being accommodated by the use of prayer books which contain liturgies that reflect different teachings on the nature of the sacraments and the priesthood, while wider issues of ecclesiology are tackled by herding together the world’s bishops into African tribal meetings called “indabas”.

I don’t know whether I could even form a sentence that uses up seven lines of post. Wow...

I defy anyone to diagram Thompson’s single sentence in paragraph two. I certainly doubt that Mr. Thompson could.

Oh, I could do it, and so could my 6th and 8th graders. It's just a long string of dependent clauses and prepositional phrases tacked onto the implied subject and verb, "It is" (much better to etc., etc.). It might be fun sorting out the adjectival and adverbial phrases and clauses and matching them to the appropriate nouns and verbs, especially if one had lots of word-magnets or a sentence-diagramming CAD program.

I can follow it if I read carefully, but I don’t think I’ve diagrammed a sentence since 6th grade.

I remember there were slanty lines on the blackboard.

You’re kidding! What do you do in your spare time, if you don’t diagram sentences?

Grammar is like tropical fish - nice to look at in the store, but an awful lot of work to do yourself.

What is ‘spare time’ (like YOU’D know)? I just got a dog to go with the cats. Now I’m just an animal lover, not a Crazy Cat Lady.

What is a sentence-diagramming CAD program? I have never heard of such a thing. Does this program automatically recognize parts of speech and put them into the right diagram?

Sentence diagramming was one of the best things I ever learned and just as onerous. While I do not now diagram sentences, I do still check for tenses, appropriate modifiers, spelling, subject-verb agreement, etc.

As for Mr. Thompsson’s sentence, you’d think he could and would write better. On the other hand, Archbishop Thomas Cranmer’s sentences also run on forever as do St. Paul’s sentences in his Epistles. Have your kids practice on those.

It's deliberate and that's why it's funny.

I just invented it. (Now all it needs is a programmer ;-). It would let you shift around modifiers, phrases, and clauses into different positions as you evaluate how words or word-groups function in the sentence. And when you were finished, if you really loved it, you could print a poster! Congrats on the dog! What kind?

More or less of a Sheltie, about six years old. The catz are unimpressed, but she’s indifferent to them. They’ll come around.

When you move a dog in with catz, indifference is good!
