The Vatican has published the names of all the missionaries who died violently in 2009.
In all 37 people were killed on active duty, the highest number in the past decade. Among them, is a lay person, 2 seminarians, 2 nuns and 30 priests.
One of them could be considered a martyr since it appears he died a victim of a religious hate crime...read more...

Gee, I wonder which countries they were murdered in and what was the religious belief of the killers? Any guesses?
I recall a few years ago some nun working in a hospitol in Somalia, shot several times in the back my masked gunman as a reprisal for the pope saying something about Islam being violent. But you don’t hear about these things from the media unless the shooters are Christians, which is never.
Most in Latin and South America then elsewhere. Probably killed by either pro-government forces if the religious were associated with liberation theology (marxist) or killed by marxist guerillas if they were trying to act along tradition Christian behavior. As for the religion of the killers, atheist or other?
From the article:
James Mukalel, who was killed in Mangalore, India in late July.
But the largest blood bath took place in Latin America, where 21 missionaries have lost their lives. 6 missionaries died in Brazil, one of them was Spanish and another Italian. 6 others died in Colombia, 3 in Mexico, 2 Spanish priests were killed in Cuba, 2 in el Salvador, an American priest in Guatemala and another priest in Honduras.

More Christians are killed in non muslim countries than in muslim ones.
The hindus in particular have been radicalized the last few years and violence in India has gotten very bad.
Great site...thanks for the link.
Thanks. Any reason why the Hindus have gotten cranky? I know historically they had tussles with the muslims, as for the Christians, I think they didn’t like the equality of mankind given the caste system, and the Christians informing the untouchables that they were loved by God just as much as the higher caste members and were not inferior given Christ taught to love all men and women equally. Is that still the rub? Or is it that given the West has improved India’s economy and enlightened it’s political structure overtime, there’s resentment? Somebody please shed some light, if possible? I may be on the wrong track....
Are there many missionaries in muslim countries?
It depends. For most Muslim countries there are no “overt” ones. Sharia law prohibits it. There are still some in the Sudan and a other African Muslim countries. Most of the missionary work is done through humanitarian missions such as World Vision or Arab World Ministries.
There are also groups like Bibles Unbound that are involved in smuggling the Word of God into restricted/hostile Nations.
The AWM site has profiles for countries and states if “tradtional missionaries” are allowed.

The fact that the lower castes more often convert to Christianity is part of it. There seems to be a fear that the “untouchables” will “take over”.
There is also a growing group of Hindus that are becoming radicalized in similar ways to Muslims. This radical brand of Hinduism (I know sounds oxymoronic) has been gaining ground particularly in the North. There is a movement to “purify” India of all religions other than Hinduism.
Six or seven states have now instituted anti-conversion laws as well.
I am unaware of any political reasons, but that does not mean there aren’t any.
