An atheist group is objecting to coded references to New Testament passages that a Michigan manufacturer is inscribing on rifle sights it provides to U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Trijicon has a $660 million contract to provide up to 800,000 sights to the Marines, and other contracts with the Army. ABC News reported Monday that the manufacturer, founded by a Christian, had long marked its products with what ABC News called “secret ‘Jesus’ Bible codes:” One of the citations on the gun sights, 2COR4:6, is an apparent reference to Second Corinthians 4:6 of the New Testament, which reads: "For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ."
Other references include citations from the books of Revelation, Matthew and John dealing with Jesus as "the light of the world." John 8:12, referred to on the gun sights as JN8:12, reads, "Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
Trijicon confirmed to ABCNews.com that it adds the biblical codes to the sights sold to the U.S. military. Tom Munson, director of sales and marketing for Trijicon, which is based in Wixom, Michigan, said the inscriptions "have always been there" and said there was nothing wrong or illegal with adding them. Munson said the issue was being raised by a group that is "not Christian." The company has said the practice began under its founder, Glyn Bindon, a devout Christian from South Africa who was killed in a 2003 plane crash.

Trijicon makes good stuff but I can’t imagine why they would jeopardize what has to be a lucrative contract that way. The world is the way it is not the way we wish it to be. I’m not a fan of mixing Jesus and killing anyway. It’s like the Teutonic knights of the middle ages singing “Christ is Risen” while butchering pagan Lithuanians at the battle of Grunwald (they lost).
So what if there is an innocuous stamp with a reference to the Bible on their product. It does not seem to stop the optics from functioning properly.
I’ve always wondered, “WHY do the atheists even care?” For being a group of people so intent on not believing, they sure do seem to have a lot of hang-ups.
With or without an inscription Trijicon makes some damned fine optics. Personally, I like the idea of an appropriate inscription. I’ll have to check my Aimpoint to see if anything’s there or not.
Everyone has a complaint. Even if it is ill founded.
Before the athiests complain they should try out the goods, pick them us, use them ... and then have an involvement.
Athiests? $! Need to get a grip on life.
They were doing it even before the government contracts.

I have Trijicon’s stuff on several of my AR’s. Works good and rugged. When I’m looking down the pipe, I’m not interested in the serial number.
Oh my gosh! Please tell me there are no “cross” hairs on the scopes also. I am now calling up all schematics for every piece of equipement used by the military, including port-a-potties, to make sure there are no crosses of any kind whatsoever incorporated into the design and construction of said equipment even though removing them will weaken the integrity of said equipment. I see a crosses in the shape of airplanes. I will also make sure runways, roadways, etc, military, foreign, federal and state, will not contain an offensive cross-representing structure known as intersections, especially those Celtic-cross-looking traffic circles. Damn those telephone poles! Now removing 100-year-old oak tree with naturally-growing, offensive, cross-forming branches.

You don’t think the US government should be doing business with Christians? The inscriptions were already there when the deal was struck. The price was right and the quality level was acceptable. Are you a vampire or something?
It's important to realize that atheism is a religion. It is a worldview. It is a matter of faith.
The agnostic shrugs and says, "I really have no idea about this God stuff. Have a nice day."
The atheist, however, believes to the depths of his soul that God does not exist. He stakes his very existence of this "fact" and makes it central to his existence. He cannot really know one way or the other, but the important point is that he believes.
Our broken society currently treats his belief in the non-existence of God as somehow more "legitimate" than my belief in the existence of God. The schools are full of the beliefs of atheists, but cannot be associated with the beliefs of churchgoers.
The First Amendment protects him as much as it protects me -- but it does not protect him more than it protects me.

Boy how you got blood thirsty Jesus freaks from my post is beyond me. Is it in dispute that the Germanic orders were less than christian in their forays into Poland and Lithuania? The Germans never quit trying until WWII. The German soldier, his belt buckle said “God with Us” while marching through Europe butchering Slavs, Jews and gypsies. Is this in dispute? Do you believe that the Germany of 1939 was a christian country? Yes the Teutonic order sang “Christ is Risen” while in battle. It is a fact. With the world view they had it seemed correct to them. I don’t want to combine killing and Jesus the way they did. If I ran that company I would recognize the world we live in today and I wouldn’t want to jeopardize a government contract. How you got blood thirsty Jesus Freak out of my post is just your attempt to characterize my post as something it was not.

Searching around on the internet, it looks like the Trijicon contract is for an NDI product. If the government buyer did not specify it in the contract, and failed to spot it, too bad.
It’s Off the Shelf just like you’d buy at any gun store.
If they bought it off the self then the government can’t complain.

First off, anyone who believes Jesus died on the cross for his sins and who pins his hope in the resurrection is bloodthirsty. Read the rest of Gospels before you speak so ignorantly. You’ll see things like Jesus saying that if you didn’t eat His flesh and drink his blood you would die, that He didn’t come to bring peace but a sword, that He came to judge the living and the dead, and that if you don’t stop sinning bad things will happen to you. Sorry if that offends you.
