The passage Shawn is describing was a topic at FR a few years ago. Freeper/ex-Mormon, colocrcountry, pointed out that in the area of Corinth a local non-Christian cult practiced sea baptising for dead family members. Paul was pointing to a practice even the locals practiced in belief that the dead rise in some future where/when.

Interesting. I had not heard that.

And the context of the passage is resurrection, not the need for baptism. Something the LDS forget.

I misspelled the name, too ... ‘colorcountry’ has lots of great desktop references, or used to.

The call from “Gary”, I agree with him on the last days thing, and actually that is the plot of a fictional work I am starting.

So if the person dies in prison, tough luck ???

What about this verse...

The Spirit of the Lord [is] upon me, because He hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; He hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, Isaiah 61:1, Luke 4:18

I will post a link to the archive show when it is put up.

It was a good show tonight. Ended up mostly refuting Baptism for the dead.

The call-ins from current Mormons are always interesting. An professing atheist calling in can also generate interesting banter. Wonder what next weeks topic will be? Wonder if Shwan will deal with ‘blasphemy’ before he leaves the “B”s?

I remember arguing this point with someone a few weeks back, don’t remember who though.

Will do. Part of the reason I like the idea of these threads is we can post topics/points of interest so it will be easier to go back and find which show it was when we need the info. Point of reference.
