40 Days for Life in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

40 Days for Life is a community-based campaign that draws attention to the evil of abortion through the use of a three-point program:

  • Prayer and fasting
  • Constant vigil
  • Community outreach

40 Days for Life takes a determined, peaceful approach to showing local communities the consequences of abortion in their own neighborhoods, for their own friends and families. It puts into action a desire to cooperate with God in the carrying out of His plan for the end of abortion in America.

The 40-day campaign tracks Biblical history, where God used 40-day periods to transform individuals, communities ... and the entire world. From Noah in the flood to Moses on the mountain to the disciples after Christ's resurrection, it is clear that God sees the transformative value of His people accepting and meeting a 40-day challenge.

Vision and mission

40 Days for Life is a focused pro-life campaign with a vision to access God’s power through prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil to end abortion in America.

The mission of the campaign is to bring together the body of Christ in a spirit of unity during a focused 40 day campaign of prayer, fasting, and peaceful activism, with the purpose of repentance, to seek God’s favor to turn hearts and minds from a culture of death to a culture of life, thus bringing an end to abortion in America.

Prayer and fasting:

40 Days for Life in Birmingham, Alabama

Christ told us some demons can only be driven out by prayer and fasting. The two go hand in hand. Prayer keeps us rooted in the fact that it is our desire to carry out God's will. Fasting is a sacrifice that helps us reach beyond our own limitations with God's help.

Fasting is not a Christian diet; it is a form of physical prayer. You can fast from food, TV, alcohol ... anything that separates you from God.

Constant vigil:

40 Days for Life in San Fernando, California

The most visible component of 40 Days for Life is a constant prayer vigil outside a place where children are aborted. It is the hope that the vigil can be maintained 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

It is a prayerful witness to the clinic's patients and employees, and to the entire community, that evil is in our midst and that with God's help, it will be defeated.

Community outreach:

40 Days for Life in Walker, Minnesota

During 40 Days for Life, the pro-life message is proactively taken to the community through focused, grassroots educational efforts. People are given the opportunity to visibly show their support for 40 Days for Life.

A door-to-door petition and education drive reaches out. Informational flyers can raise awareness about abortion. Church involvement, media contact and campus outreach also contribute.

This from today’s email”

Now that we’re a bit more than two weeks into this
40 Days for Life campaign, we’re hearing reports of
abortion center workers and supporters getting
a bit testy in response to the prayer vigils.

In Reno, Nevada, police are investigating after a car
veered off the road and flattened two large signs that
had been placed in the public right-of-way across from
the abortion facility. The signs were part of a display
featuring the message “abortion stops a beating heart.”

According to witnesses, the driver of the car was the
abortionist whose business is the focus of the Reno
40 Days for Life campaign.

In Augusta, Maine, an after-hours graffiti artist took
a can of spray paint to the signs used by the 40 Days
for Life team.

I’m not sure what anyone hoped to accomplish by such
vandalism, but the prank has backfired. It’s actually
generating positive media attention for the campaign.

Janet in Augusta said a local sign maker was already
working on materials he’s donating to the effort, so
those will be most welcome when they’re finished.

In Little Rock, Arkansas, there were so many teens
from a local church youth group praying at the
40 Days for Life vigil that five cars headed towards
the abortion center turned around and left without
ever stopping.

That infuriated the abortionist.

“He came outside with his armed guard and began to tell
the sidewalk counselor and teens that they should not
be there, that they will be responsible for forcing
girls into back-alley abortions again,” said Mary in
Little Rock.

“The guard was later spewing profanities at the youth,”
she said. “We are getting the abortionist where it
really hurts — his income.”

In Fayetteville, Arkansas, William Harrison — the
abortionist who had said praying for an end to abortion
is “silly” — now has a huge sign outside his building:

“365 days of prayer for safe and legal abortion.”

And yes, you can click here to see the picture:

“Never has he ever had the word ‘abortion’ visible on
his property. He has often bragged about no one
knowing what he is doing,” said Debbie in Fayetteville.
“Now they’ll all know what he is doing.”

Also in Fayetteville, the counter-protester with the
Mohawk hair style who had promised to be out often with
his “I love abortion” sign hasn’t been seen lately.

Another counter-protester surfaces occasionally in
Atlanta, Georgia. But Kateri in Atlanta said that’s a
good sign, as 40 Days for Life “is beginning to be
more and more noticed and felt in the community.”

Kateri said the police are out almost every day,
probably at the invitation of the abortion center.
Of course, the only thing they have to “investigate”
is a peaceful prayer vigil.

“That is also a sign that the facility is taking
notice of and feeling effects from our efforts,” she
said. “We pray this trend ends in the complete change
of heart for all who work there and an end to abortion
in the place.”

So please keep praying!

Day 19 - March 7

Intention:

Pray that when those representing Planned Parenthood and other abortion groups see volunteers for 40 Days for Life, they see ambassadors of Christ, and may each volunteer be consciously aware at all times of Whom we represent.

Scripture:

I...beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness, and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love.

-- Ephesians 4:1b-2

Reflection:

When Carol Everett, a former abortionist and post-abortive woman, was asked what turned her heart from death to life in Christ, she said, "It was unconditional love," shown by a man who prayed daily for her in front of the abortion clinic where she worked.

He told Carol that "God had sent him" because there was someone in there that God wanted out. She left 27 days later and now serves as Christ's ambassador to help others. We too have been sent by Christ as an ambassador to love unconditionally those God seeks to "get out" of their bondage and sin. What a high calling it is -- much higher than any presidential appointment to another country.

In his book, Fishers of Men, Dr. Sumner Wemp describes what it means to be an ambassador of Christ, the King of Kings:

  • God has chosen us (John 15:16)
  • We are sent into a world that is not our home (1 Peter 2:11)
  • Our walk must match our talk (1 Timothy 3:7)
  • We must abide in Him for daily instruction (John 15:5)
  • Know our purpose -- to seek and to save that which is lost (Luke 19:10)
  • We are to reconcile others to God with His authority (Matthew 28:19-20)
  • Do not let kindness and truth leave you (Proverbs 3:3-4)
  • Our service is to be grounded and rooted in love (Ephesians 3:17)
Pray that we each will walk worthy of the calling with which we were called!

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, we are humbled that you have called us and appointed us to be ambassadors of Christ in a world that is not our home. We pray that your Holy Spirit will empower us to walk worthy of the calling. We pray that Your unconditional love will flow through us onto those who desperately need Your saving grace. In the name of Christ who is worthy, amen.

From today’s email:

Stacy took part in the 40 Days for Life vigil recently
in Jackson, Mississippi. It was the first time she had
ever gone to pray at an abortion center. “I arrived
not knowing what to expect,” she said. “I’m so glad
I went.”

She met some wonderful people whom she joined in
prayer. But she also had a passerby curse at her. And
a while later, a young couple and their friend entered
the building, yelling that they would call the police
because they were being harassed. “But I hung in there
anyway,” she said.

Stacy completed her prayer time, but felt led to stay
a little longer.

A short time later, this same couple and their friend
left the building — the ones who’d threatened to call
the police.

But they had taken on a different attitude.

“She changed her mind! They seemed so relieved. It was
amazing how all three seemed so happy about the
decision,” Stacy said.

“It was unbelievable. Praise God!”

The prayer team them met a woman who was pregnant with
twins. “She already had three kids and was scared
to death. After we talked and prayed with her she
seemed broken and said she would think about it.”
Stacy said she’s confident this woman will make the
right decision — but we need to pray for her!

“I’m so glad I was able to see for myself what God
can do through those who will reach out,” she said.
“I know from this experience I am forever changed.
These women, in deciding to make the right choice,
have changed their lives in spectacular ways — but
they also have changed mine.”

Anita in Arizona didn’t see such amazing results in
her prayer time at the 40 Days for Life vigil. But
that’s all right. Sometimes you see it. Sometimes you
don’t. God reveals His plan differently to each of us.

“I was doing my usual daily routine of getting my son
to school,” she said. Then she glanced at the clock.
“We were way ahead of schedule.”

A still, small voice told her, “Go and pray at Planned
Parenthood.” So she did. “God has given me extra time
to pray today. I knelt down in the dirt and I prayed
for 20 minutes.”

Only God knows who may have been touched by those
prayers. “Maybe there was a woman waiting for the
center to open, and then changed her mind. I do not
know,” Anita said. “What I do know is that we are
called to be faithful, not successful. We are to
listen and obey and leave the successful part up
to God.”

Anita said she may never see the fruit of those
20 minutes of prayers, “but I know our loving God
can use that tiny bit of time and those few little
prayers to move evil and blindness out of the way.
Let’s keep praying!”

Day 20 - March 8

Intention:

We pray for humility in our work for God's Kingdom.

Scripture:

Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who being in the form of God did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.

-- Philippians 2:5-8

Reflection:

There is no limit to what we can accomplish when we don't care who gets the credit.

Jesus Christ's life on earth exemplifies a total submission to the will of the Father. His humility, compassion, gentleness and thoughtfulness are reflected over and over again in the New Testament. He was God incarnate, yet He chose to be born to a humble, working class home.

How absurd it must have seemed to the rich and powerful that the Son of God, the Messiah, the one foretold by the prophets, the 'King of the Jews' was born and raised as a simple peasant.

During His thirty-three years on earth, He sought no riches, claimed no secular power and gathered no possessions. Yet, His short time on earth changed more lives, softened more hearts, and gave hope to more people, than all the rich and powerful human 'kings' combined. And, at the end of His life on earth, by dying on the cross, He opened the door to eternal life for those who heed his words and follow in his footsteps.

Prayer:

O Lord, help us follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Let us humbly and diligently work to restore legal protection for the unborn, the disabled, the medically dependent and all innocent children of God whose lives are threatened. Let us remember the old adage that "He can never lead who has not first learned to obey." And, Lord, grant us a peaceful heart as we labor in your name. Amen.

From today's email -- halfway point. Have you prayed yet?

I still think it's a miracle any time 40 Days for
Life prayer vigil participants are blessed with the
knowledge that a mother has changed her mind about
aborting a child.

And today, as we reach the halfway point of this
campaign -- it's already happened ...

... 209 times that we know of!

That's 102 more lives spared -- over THE LAST WEEK.

Here are just a few of those miracles:

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA: A woman and her daughter spent
about an hour in the parking lot at the abortion
center, entering and leaving the business several
times. Finally, they drove out of the lot. The young
woman rolled down her window and said, "I am not going
to have an abortion."

"We were there at the critical time," said Trudy in
Jacksonville. "We were there at the entrance of the
driveway, offering her hope in her desperate situation.

She saw strangers praying for her; she saw signs that
gave her options; she experienced the ultimate,
unconditional love from people whom she may never see
again in this world. And her miraculous decision gave
us peace and joy this world can not give!"

YAKIMA, WASHINGTON: A 40 Days for Life participant
described his boss as "a good Christian man," so it
shocked him when his boss said his 16-year-old
daughter was pregnant and planning to have an abortion.
So, the man just prayed harder.

Two weeks later, his boss returned to say that when
his daughter went to Planned Parenthood for her
abortion, prayer volunteers convinced her not to go
through with it. She went to a pro-life resource
center instead.

PHOENIX, ARIZONA: Beth in Phoenix reports at least
eleven babies have been spared from abortion during
this 40 Days for Life campaign. "I praise God for
our prayer warriors and gifted sidewalk counselors,"
she said.

In addition, two volunteer escorts at the Phoenix
abortion center have quit! One of them shared her
gratitude for the vigil participants' presence.

PENSACOLA, FLORIDA: One of the prayer volunteers
spoke with two women in their vehicle outside the
abortion center. He handed one of them a brochure
about abortion alternatives and what abortion does
to women.

"Two hours later the women drove past us, giving us
the thumbs up and pointing that she kept her baby,"
said Ernie in Pensacola. "What would have happened if
the prayer vigil participant had not been there to
hand these women this information?"

____

I also have news on how 40 Days for Life is gathering
momentum in Australia. The team in Brisbane, which is
conducting its second 40 Days for Life campaign,
recently had a great opportunity to spread the word
about this life-saving ministry.

Daniel, who serves as Brisbane's media and
communications coordinator, was interviewed on the
Vision Radio Network, a nationwide Christian
broadcaster in Australia.

____

How many more lives will be saved this week, thanks
to your prayers and faithfulness.

Holy God,

Though societies and cultures change, You are our God Who never changes. You are the same-—yesterday, today, and forever. Your Word directs us to choose life and choose it abundantly. Your Son, Jesus Christ, is Love Incarnate. We ask You to place that special love of Jesus in the heart of every woman with child so that each growing baby may be protected, nurtured, and birthed as You have willed. In His Holy Name we pray. Amen.

Day 21 - March 9

Intention:

We pray for the conversion of all those who refuse to acknowledge that human life belongs only to God.

Scripture:

Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying: "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations."

-- Jeremiah 1:4-5

Reflection:

To be or not to be? There is no question!

The question of "being" is something philosophers have long pondered. What is the meaning of being and what is the source? In the passage before us, we have our answer. We have being because we are known by God.

For God to declare that he knows and sets apart the prophet Jeremiah even before he is conceived indicates that our being rests in God's own being. Because He is and because He wills we, therefore, are and do. The Apostle Paul says as much when he declares before the philosophers of his day, "In Him we live and move and have our being" (Acts 17:28).

One of the tragedies of the abortion culture is that life in the womb has been so heartbreakingly devalued. To embrace the arguments of the "pro-choice" crowd one must conclude that the child in the womb doesn't exist, isn't there, has no being. But nothing could be further from the truth. That child is known by God and, as such, has being.

Prayer:

Lord God, we confess that in You we live and move and have our being. Because You are, we are. May we find grace from You to affirm the being of every human and may we labor to make this truth known to the world around us. Amen.

Creator God,

When we consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars that You have ordained, then Lord, cause us to consider also the most precious nature of the baby in the womb, and to do all we can to protect these innocent creations. We are Your people, seeking Your very best for each new life. In the Name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Day 22 - March 10

Intention:

Pray for fathers who participated in the decision to abort their child, and for those who did not have a voice, that they would find freedom and healing in Christ.

Scripture:

If indeed you have heard Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.

-- Ephesians 4: 21-23

Reflection:

According to the Guttmacher Institute, one-third of American women will have had an abortion by age 45. Seldom reported however is the fact that an equally significant number of men have played a role in terminating a pregnancy. Some have participated through persuasion, or by providing the financial means for the abortion. Still others were against an abortion, but had no sway in the decision to terminate their child.

Only in recent years have we realized that men suffer from their loss, as more and more seek healing. Warren Williams, founder of Fathers and Brothers Ministries says he believes men are coming forward for help because God instilled in men a desire to be a protector of their lineage, a provider for their families, to be a husband and father.

Men are suffering and grieving the loss of their children, and though their grief may be expressed differently than that of a woman, it is grief nonetheless and they too need tender care and biblical counseling to experience forgiveness and healing.

Intervention at the appropriate time in the decision-making process may spare both the young man and woman from the lifelong pain and trauma of abortion. Biblical counseling for post-abortive men and women is essential for them to heal and begin their life anew in Christ.

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, We pray for young men who participated in the termination of their child and are broken as You are over their loss. Forgive their sin, Lord, and bring opportunity for healing and renewal of their minds in Christ Jesus. For those suffering from an abortion they did not choose, restore their joy as they learn to forgive others and trust You with their future. In the name of Christ, who heals the brokenhearted, amen.

Day 23 - March 11

Intention:

For the medical community, that the truth they know about the human body may become awe and wonder at the God who made it.

Scripture:

Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them.

--Psalm 139:16

Reflection:

Human beings -- God's tapestries.

Psalm 139 is a psalm that reveals the enormity and otherness of God. His divine attributes are on display: omniscience (2-4), omnipresence (7-12), loving-kindness (17-18), justice (19-20), righteousness (23-24), and omnipotence. Yet, when it came to express this last attribute, what example did the psalmist use - God's creation of mountains, seas, or far-flung galaxies? No, he used none of these. To express the wonder of God's unparalleled creative power the writer mentions the fashioning of the human in the womb (14-16).

The Hebrew word used to express God's forming of us in the womb, raqam, is the same term for needlework or embroidery. In other words, we are a tapestry that displays God's artistic mastery. And, like the artist who knows his creation down to the last detail, God intimately knows us. This reality provokes the writer to awe and wonder. He proclaims, "I am fearfully and wonderfully made."

What is true for this psalmist is true for each human being. Each is fashioned by God and known by him and we can proclaim on behalf of each, "I am fearfully and wonderfully made."

Prayer:

Gracious God, help us to appreciate the wonder and beauty of Your creation. Help us proclaim on behalf of every one of our fellow human beings, "I am fearfully and wonderfully made." May the knowledge that we are intimately known by You shape our lives and actions. Amen.

Yesterday’s email:

Today’s devotional encourages us to pray for fathers
involved in abortion decisions.

In some cases, it’s the father who encourages — even
demands — an abortion. In other cases, the father is
the forgotten man who is left helpless because has no
“choice” concerning the fate of his child. In all
cases, these men need your prayers.

That was painfully pointed out in a note Matt left on
the 40 Days for Life blog.

Matt said he used to live across the street from an
abortion center. “I would scoff at the man with all
the abortion photos protesting it every day,” he
wrote. “I even yelled at him.”

Why was Matt so angry? He now knows the answer:

“I have fathered up to five aborted kids.”

He said this represented self-centeredness at its most
extreme level. “I am so sad by this I burst into tears
every time I think about it. Thank God for His grace
and forgiveness, because many times when I think about
it I still do not forgive myself. It is so wrong it is
unimaginable.”

Of course, Matt now knows the truth and is speaking out.
“I pray someone sees this and changes their mind. If one
baby is saved, all heaven rejoices,” he wrote, adding,
“I can barely see the keyboard from my tears.”

Brian is an intern at Expectant Mother Care in the Bronx
— the pro-life pregnancy resource organization that
helps sponsor 40 Days for Life in New York City. “As a
guy,” he wrote on the group’s blog, “it’s rather
interesting to watch and talk with the fathers.”

Typically, he says, these are men who act like they’re
in charge of the whole world.

“Often,” Brian said, “this is the fellow who is
pressuring the woman to abort, although, they generally
cover by saying ‘it’s her choice, I’m behind her either
way.’ This is such a copout.”

Some of these men “have built up such a wall that they
cannot be reached,” he said, “except through prayer.”

Still, he said, there is always hope. Some of them do
really care about the mother and will “react in horror
and even turn around after they realize what actually
goes on during an abortion.”

Brian has seen these men experience profound change.
Where they had been demanding an abortion, they now
beg the mother to spare their child’s life.

He met such a man recently. “Watching his face and
body language change was one of the more amazing
changes I’ve seen working here. He and his girlfriend
decided not to go ahead with getting an abortion,”
Brian said. “Seems he didn’t have everything figured
out after all!”

Rachel’s Vineyard, an organization that helps people
seek healing following an abortion experience, has an
outreach for men as well as women. If you — or anyone
you know — is in need of such healing, please see:

“We have wonderful news!” said Kathy in Columbia,
Missouri. “The abortionist who did surgical
abortions in Columbia at Planned Parenthood
HAS RESIGNED!”

You could sense the excitement in Kathy’s e-mail:
“This is awesome news!”

Columbia is right in the middle of Missouri —
and now more than a two-hour drive to the nearest
available surgical abortions in St. Louis and
Kansas City. “But we still have to pray for the
conversion of the doctor who gives the RU-486
abortion pill on Thursdays,” said Kathy.

Mary Ann in Great Falls, Montana just sent her
40 Days for Life team with an all-capitals subject
line: “ALL GLORY AND HONOR BELONGS TO GOD!!”

“I could barely type it my hands were so shaky,”
she said.

The good news? “Planned Parenthood here has
decreased its ‘clinic’ hours to Monday, Wednesday
and Friday,” explained Mary Ann. “This is a BIG
change as they used to be open all day Monday
through Friday and every other Saturday.”

This marks the fourth 40 Days for Life campaign
in Great Falls. “Never before have we even seen
the response that we are being blessed with
during this campaign,” said Mary Ann. “Our numbers
of prayer vigil participants has increased
tremendously, as well as the number of different
churches that are participating.”

The Planned Parenthood abortion center that’s the
site of the 40 Days for Life vigil in Winston-Salem,
North Carolina was closed for two consecutive
Saturdays — which was indeed a surprise to prayer
volunteers. The abortionist was nowhere to be seen.

Toni in Winston-Salem isn’t sure why the facility was
closed, or whether the cutback in hours is permanent; “
so we just keep on showing up and doing what is our
Christian privilege as well as our obligation to do.”

In Little Rock, Arkansas, Mary is seeing signs of
hope at the 40 Days for Life vigil.

“About 4:45pm, when most people had left the
building, an employee slowly passed by prayer
volunteers and told them, ‘Keep up what you are
doing.’ One employee left last year, so we are
getting through to some of them,” she said.

“Sounds like another one may be thinking about it.
Praise God!”

A 40 Days for Life vigil participant in another city
was able to offer a gift to the Planned Parenthood
abortionist — a copy of “Mere Christianity” by
C.S. Lewis. “God has used this book to convert
many non-believers,” she said.

As she delivered the book, she asked him, “What do
you have to lose?” He was seen carrying the book
as he left for the day.

So please keep this man — and all abortion
industry workers — in your prayers.
