Benedict is a the one man at the Vatican who has done the most to uphold moral law, to restore clerical discipline, and to protect children from abuse. The attack on him, now, is a strategic move on the part of the New York Times and their allies to silence the one voice that opposes the final sweeping victory of the Sexual Revolution, in which, in every way, the young are always the victims.
Upholding Benedict and "the Catholic wing of the Catholic Church" at this point is not a "detraction" or "distraction." It is a strategic necessity in the vindication of the truth and the defense of children.
Sorry for the double post. I’m moving fast.

To the extent that defenses of the Catholic Church are one’s first automatic response, they can safely be called robotic. The underlying philosophy seems to be that whatever defends the Catholic Church is good, therefore one cannot do too much of it. I appreciate any substantive contributions to the discussion.
May this whole fracas serve to make people more aware of the problem, and help to protect the children.
