1963 letter indicates former pope knew of abuse

LOS ANGELES – The head of a Roman Catholic order that specialized in the treatment of pedophile priests visited with the then-pope nearly 50 years ago and followed up with a letter recommending the removal of pedophile priests from ministry, according to a copy of the letter released Wednesday.

In the Aug. 27, 1963 letter, the head of the New Mexico-based Servants of the Holy Paraclete tells the pope he recommends removing pedophile priests from active ministry and strongly urges defrocking repeat offenders. The letter, written by the Rev. Gerald M.C. Fitzgerald, appears to have been drafted at the request of the pope and summarizes Fitzgerald's thoughts on problem priests after his Vatican visit.

A message left with the Paraclete order at one of their two existing facilities in Missouri was not returned. A number for the second facility was disconnected.

It’s been fun but I have to get up early for work.

We’ll agree to disagree.

“Can you tell us how accusations of sexual abuse were handled by schools say 40 years ago.”

As a victim of physical abuse by my father our school nurse called LE when she saw belt welts all over my thighs. The school nurse also called both my parents with her concerns and what she was going to do. I was in elem sch in the late sixties.

There is no cover up as it’s pretty obvious that if the church wanted to keep these documents secret, they could. Instead they have chosen acknowledgement in order to pursue forgiveness and cleansing to scripture. (If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness)

You failed to acknowledge ANY of the changes the church has instituted to prevent further instance and to keep homosexuals out of seminary.

Sorry, I think you are anti-catholic.

I agree with you there. It's an egregious crime. It's a more egregious crime when it's committed by an authority figure, more egregious still when it's committed by a clergyman.

And when the MSM and popular culture starts admitting that it's an egregious crime no matter what, and stops glorifying perverts like Harvey Milk and garbage like Eve Ensler's Vagina Monologues (which glorifies the lesbian rape of a teenage girl by an adult), we'll all be better off.

I should have clarified. I meant incidents of sexual abuse involving a teacher or other school employee and students.

And that being said, I am glad you found an adult who would speak up for you and tell LE.

The Catholic Church has kinda had to make abuse by priests somewhat public considering they have now paid out what over two billion in civil lawsuits to victims.

But they don’t have to release all these 50 year old documents about dead people who aren’t part of any current civil or criminal case.

Yet they are - because that’s how you clean out the corruption and make sure it never happens again. But nobody gives them credit for it. Nope just more sensationalized media bashing.

Because the media is interested in protecting children, they’re interested in protecting abortion and the Church has been the biggest stumbling block that still speaks against killing children.

You are so blind.

Those 50 year old documents are leading them to the Vatican.

Oh, and how can you sensationalize two billion dollars in payouts?

"Perhaps you failed to notice that the media is currently chasing down 50 year old letters involving people who are now DEAD."

Unfortunately, the fact that anyone is dead or the number of years ago that this took place does not heal the pain or trauma from an unrepented crime. To you, it may look like an act of desperation to dig that far back but for the rest of us, Catholics and non-Catholics, it points to the fact that this is a problem that has been going on for a long time and its only been in recent years that enough pressure has been put on to force the powers within to address it with any conviction.

How come no similar pressure to address it in the public schools where pedophile teachers are protected by unions and moved around from district to district?

Is it because public school unions support abortion?

Teachers are arrested and put in jail and they become registered sex offenders and lose their teacher certification in most cases.

Well, yeah, as a matter of fact, it does look pretty desperate.

this is a problem that has been going on for a long time

I have it on good authority that there have been sinners among the Catholic clergy ever since there have been Catholic clergy. Sexual perverts, adulterers, embezzlers, liars, frauds, cheats, slothful people, gluttons, drunks ... and also great saints. That is, they're much like the rest of humanity.

If you don’t believe there is pressure on public schools, then I don’t know where you live. I live in the middle of Liberal Hell with a pretty rotten public school system but they don’t tolerate sex crimes against children. And before you ask, they have even fired school staff and substitute teachers whose background checks came back with positive hits for sex offenses. They don’t catch them all, but when they do, not only are they dismissed, their names and photos are big news items in the local paper and television channels. It’s not legal to run them out of town with tar and feathers anymore.

Google “abusive teachers moved around”. Just as in the church, there was often a significant difference between what happened, and what was supposed to happen.

Then you surely agree that the way this Church has handled their particular problem is pathetic. How could you not? :D

This certainly is an orchestrated attack on the Church.

I daresay there are a LOT more pedophiles and perverts working for AP—or the Washington Post and the NY Times—than there ever were in the Catholic Church.

And their obvious purpose in running this lying propaganda campaign is to lessen the influence of the Church, so that pedophiles will be more free to do their thing.

That’s why the Times was busy defending Rembert Weakland and attacking Pope Benedict a few days ago—because they really support the dissidents and perverts.

googled and just in the first two pages of links most articles state that school districts are pursuing teachers and throwing them in jail
