Latino Immigrants Proud That L.A.'s Next Archbishop Is 'One of Us' [Can We Get Rid of Ethnic Pride?]

Latino Immigrants Proud That L.A.'s Next Archbishop Is 'One of Us' Many agree that such an appointment is long overdue in an archdiocese that is now 70% Latino. Jose Gomez, born in Mexico, is expected to take over next year.

"It's a recognition of the numbers, basically," says Msgr. David O'Connell, pastor of St. Michael Catholic Church in South Los Angeles, about a Latino's appointment to head an archdiocese that is 70% Latino.

By Patrick J. McDonnell April 7, 2010

It was a weekday evening following the exhilaration of Holy Week, but St. Michael Catholic Church in South Los Angeles was still abuzz.

There was a memorial Mass for a deceased parishioner, a spiritual encounter for couples, a women's prayer gathering and a session for new parents -- all conducted in Spanish. People arrived en masse as though headed to a sporting event, undeterred by a church bulletin noting five recent homicides in the vicinity.

Word was just circulating that the Archdiocese of Los Angeles would soon have a new leader -- Archbishop Jose Gomez of San Antonio, Mexican-born, like most of these parishioners -- replacing Cardinal Roger Mahony, set to retire next year after a quarter-century guiding his hometown see.

A pervasive sense of pride, even elation, greeted the news that a compatriot would become the heir apparent.

"Of course it makes you feel good. He's one of us; he understands us," said Juan Bramusco, 60, originally from Mexico's Zacatecas state.

Many agreed that such an appointment was long overdue in an archdiocese that is now 70% Latino. But Humberto Magallanes, another volunteer, voiced a common refrain.

"The new bishop is going to have some big shoes to fill," said Magallanes, 29, a construction worker. "Cardinal Rogelio Mahony has fought for immigrants as much as anyone."

The Latinos of the LAT won’t know what happens when the orthodoxy of Archbishop Jose Gomez hits their Archdiocese!

Watch for it. I’ve heard in other threads that Archbishop Gomez works quietly and efficiently behind the scenes.

Oh my, what will the LASlimes say then? LOL!

A person I trust, who knows Gomez, says he’s an excellent choice, and has done great things in San Antonio.

But if he’s for amnesty, and is a patsy for the Democrats’ plan to create a permanent pro-abortion Hispanic underclass voting bloc, he should be fought tooth-and-nail.

I maybe wrong once again, but I truly believe that Archbishop Jose Gomez would find the sentiments in the title just offensive. I’m not so sure that the exiting Archbishop would!
But remember that only Christ can read a man’s heart and therefore judge it, as He will on Judgement Day!

No doubt! Check a calendar and your head will spin with all of the Ethnic Pride observances: African-American Heritage (when did they stop being Black?), Hispanic-American Heritage, Pacific Islander-American Heritage, etc., etc.!!

I want my Caucasion/Whitey/Cracker-American Heritage observance too! Fair is Fair!

“— replacing Cardinal Roger Mahony, set to retire next year after a quarter-century guiding his hometown see.”

As I recall, Mahony was an import from the San Joaquin Valley. A Caesar Chavez loving socialist liberal worm. He won’t be missed. But he will be prayed for.

Perhaps worded badly by the Latino’s i.e. “one of us” but I do understand the “ethnic pride” bit.

He will clean up the mess, but he will be targeted by the media and left wing just as our Holy Father is.

But remember that only Christ can read a man’s heart and therefore judge it, as He will on Judgement Day!

Yes, but in the mean time we have to live with his actions and words. That's why, I believe, man can be judgmental in this life and make his judgments known.

I don’t recall that we have a vote on this selection. It would be interesting to know who the desired Mahony replacement candidates were from the leftist LA archdiocese office.

Of course - we are required to judge actions and their consequence! That is quite different from judging the person as it pertains to eternal destination! Motivation is I believe something that can be examined, but only in the context of neutral, detached assessment.
