DESERET, Millard County -- Does a likeness of Joseph Smith Jr., first president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, exist in the vast desert of Millard County?
Some think so.
On a remote hillside in Utah's Sevier Desert, about four miles southwest of Deseret and some 17 miles southwest of Delta, rises a craggy volcanic outcrop. For almost seven decades, area residents and visitors have been attracted to the formation.
In it, they can discern the outlines of a man's features: head, brow, nose, mouth and even perhaps a high collar.
Welcome to the "Great Stone Face," or the "Guardian of Deseret," or "Keeper of the Desert." From a certain angle, notes the book "A History of Millard County," a 1999 entry in the Utah Centennial County History Series, "some see a resemblance to LDS Church founder Joseph Smith."
"Many Mormons see an uncanny resemblance of this naturally carved formation to profile pictures of church founder Joseph Smith," Millard County's official tourism site reads.

One of the area's earliest histories, "100 Years of History in Millard County," published by the Daughters of Utah Pioneers in 1941, says the formation was first recognized in 1926 when LDS Bishop Joseph Damson of Deseret and Frank Beckwith, publisher of the Millard County Chronicle, spotted it from the desert floor and instantly saw a resemblance to paintings of Joseph Smith.

Ironically, this area of lava rock, about one mile south of the winding Sevier River, was once called "The Devil's Kitchen." Even today, some local residents think the Great Stone Face has a bit of a split personality. When viewed from its east side, the formation is sometimes referred to as "The Devil's Chimney."
The north side of the rock formation...creates natural nests for birds.

"Ironically" -- or prophetically???
Re: "The Devil's Chimney" -- yup, lots of the devil's smoke has arisen from the "Chimney" flue of Smith! The devil cooked up plenty through "the devil's kitchen" in upstate NY, Kirtland, OH, Missouri, and Nauvoo!
Do you know where it is reported that he said the Garden of Eden was in Jackson County, Missouri? I’ve heard this at various sources but don’t know where it can be confirmed at.

just ... wow - thanks
Foghorn Leghorn without a doubt. Though what part of him is unclear. But it is ol’ Foghorn for sure.
Joseph Smith huh? Maybe they should just call it “Charlatan Rock”.

"We shall Hie to Kolob, Brother Young."
1. If you could hie to Kolob In the twinkling of an eye,
And then continue onward With that same speed to fly,
Do you think that you could ever, Through all eternity,
Find out the generation Where Gods began to be?
2. Or see the grand beginning, Where space did not extend?
Or view the last creation, Where Gods and matter end?
Me thinks the Spirit whispers, No man has found pure space,
Nor seen the outside curtains, Where nothing has a place.
3. The works of God continue, And worlds and lives abound;
Improvement and progression Have one eternal round.
There is no end to matter; There is no end to space;
There is no end to spirit; There is no end to race.
4. There is no end to virtue; There is no end to might;
There is no end to wisdom; There is no end to light.
There is no end to union; There is no end to youth;
There is no end to priesthood; There is no end to truth.
5. There is no end to glory; There is no end to love;
There is no end to being; There is no death above.
There is no end to glory; There is no end to love;
There is no end to being; There is no death above
I see a vague resemblance. Nothing to write home about or write an article about.
Seriously this was the best Mormon attack post you could come up with today?
I see some of the most non Christ-like bahavior by so many people on this board. It is rather ironic and sad.
It is rather ironic that a believer in the words of Brigham Young is inclined to judge what is "Christ-like".
Mormon doctrine is that salvation is ONLY through mormonism.
I am ;P
PD...
* Have you ever pondered why your Mormon leaders claim they're the "only true & living church on the face of the whole earth" (D&C 1:30) if they wanted to be your definition of "Christ-like" and not put down other churches?
* Have you ever wondered why Mormon leaders claim in their Book of Mormon that all other churches fall under the umbrella of Satan (1 Nephi 14:9-10) if they wanted to be your definition of "Christ-like" and not put down other churches?
* Have you ever meditated on how Smith's first vision claim that every single creed of the Christian sects didn't honor God and was an "abomination" to the Mormon god? (How is that not "bashing" every Christian creed out there? How is that "Christ-like" in your opinion)
* Have you ever asked your fellow Mormons why they claim in Smith's first vision that all Christian professors are "corrupt." (How is that not bashing all Christian professors of their faith?)
* Have you ever asked fellow Mormons why they claim in their doctrine all Christian denominations are "apostate" (How is that not bashing all Catholics, Protestants, and Orthodox and each member therein?)
PD, I do want to look at this through your eyes for a moment (and hope you would return the favor)...let's just for a moment assume some of your assessments are right. Let's assume that in the zeal to share truth, some tone or attitudes may be off-base from representing Christ on some of these boards [I frankly haven't looked closely @ comments on this board...I'm not impugning anbody...just trying to understand PD]
But let's just start with my comment in #1...let's assume you're right about that comment & others to boot. In fact, let's even enlarge it beyond this thread. What's the "worse case" assessment you could make about a few dozen FReeper commentators? You could put together a few hundred threads over the last three years; thousands of comments & opinions with a limited readership. And they're just opinions, right?
But what about what I outlined above in comparison?
Instead of 3 years, it's a full-blown 180 years on the Mormon side...
Instead of a few hundred threads, we're now talking about millions of printed & electronic LDS pages labeling us in vicious ways...
Instead of a few dozen FReeper posters, you're now talking millions of Mormons...52,000 Lds missionaries this year...a literal 1 million plus since 1830...not to mention Lds bookstore workers distributing those comments about us...Ensign & Liahona mag writers & editors...all the online overseers of Lds.org...the Lds curricula writers...all the translators & editors as this stuff gets circulated into hundreds of languages...
[Keep in mind above that since Marion G. Romney headed the Lds missionary enterprise in the '60s, he would ensure to Lds missionaries that one of their top four talking points was on the so-called universal apostasy & restoration].
Therefore, in all in the above, Christians have been called by Mormons as...
...so-called "apostates..."
...heart-drifters (Smith's First Vision)...
...the Church of Satan (1 Nephi 14:9-10)...
...creedally abominable (Smith's First Vision)...
..."corrupt" (Smith's First Vision)
...a false and dead church (D&C 1:30 implication)
And not just uttering all this as mere opinion of us, but having the gall to claim this is how God views us..."Thus saith the Mormon god..."
How could you even compare all of the above on any kind of a balanced scale and come away offended? I mean Mormons toss at us the beam/mote - sliver illustration all the time...but I can't think of a better beam/mote -sliver illustration than what the mighty Lds press & missionary enterprise has put into daily world-wide production.
PD, the great offense is on our side! Hence this is a drop-in-the-bucket defense of this 180-year onslaught of slander hurled daily at the Christian church by Mormons worldwide.
And it's your tithing $ that's been paying for this...so I hold you & all "faithful" Mormons accountable for this nonsense.
Let me know when you've written a note of objection to SLC re: all these labels & putdowns & slander by Lds leaders.
(ejonesie asked knowing there will be no answer for there is none...)
Oh there you go again . . . .

Never a seagull around when you need one.
Cricket bump
Nope, crickets kinda go kerunch squish
Utah jackrabbits go THUMP!
Delmar: Sure it is! Look at him!
So you and the other folks in your Mormon attack squad on here use your misperception of being attacked in general to justify your attacks?
What goes on here is way beyond supposedly defending yourselves and the tactics used are certainly not virtuous.
Yeah... that’s Christ-like. *eye-roll*
I made it quite clear you have no offense, comparison-wise, to even object...especially if you haven't raised any objections to SLC HQ as to how the Christian church is treated by Lds leaders in their written assessments of us.
Honey; we do NOT defend anything; but merely point out the LDS logical and theological problems - using It's own words.
We cannot waste our precious time trying to defend each scurrilous charge that comes from TBMs, so therefore we don't try.
If they CANNOT defend what the data shows; why do they waste THEIR time by attacking the messenger?
Even if our 'tactics' are reprehensible; MORMONs could STILL show the Truth {according to LDS standards} couldn't they?
Colofornian cited very specific examples of why many of us feel the way we do about mormonism, examples that come directly from the founder of your religion, the past prophets and the current prophet, including SLC and other related sources. Please, please explain how those very specific examples can be misinterpreted or misperceived as you claim. I'd like to see that.
"What goes on here is way beyond supposedly defending yourselves and the tactics used are certainly not virtuous."
Much like calling posters "liars and deceivers"? Is that "supposedly defending yourself" and being "virtous"?
You have been confronted on your allegations numerous times, refusing to acknowledge your behavior and refusing to post rebuttals to your allegations of "lies and deceit".
PD, didn't your parents ever teach you that when you criticize someone you need to be specific, not generic (not make them guess as to what you're referencing)?
If you're a parent -- or plan on being one --
--or if you're a workplace supervisor -- or ever plan to be one --
--could you imagine trying to bring some accountability to your child or to an employee under you by disciplining (or "writing up" an employee) where you simply mentioned vague generalities and accusations? How would your child, or an employee under know, know how to engage in "corrective behavior" under your "leadership" of hinting at vague generalities?
(Oh, and as an afterthought, I could imagine some employee coming to you as a supervisor, detailing concerns about “management,” — and — based upon your previous response, you’d be sure to handle that with the appropriate *eyeroll*...real smooth)
