United Methodists might broach subject of gay preachers

Will they follow the lead of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America?

Are the United Methodists preparing to follow the lead of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) in allowing gay ministers?

The ELCA spent a decade arguing over the matter before it voted last summer to recognize gay and lesbian ministers who are involved in monogamous relationships. The United Methodists aren't anywhere close to taking a similar vote; the best description of their situation is that they are thinking about thinking about it.

At its meeting next month, the Minnesota Annual Conference has agreed to accept eight petitions dealing with the church's stance on homosexuality. But conference officials aren't promising that the petitions will reach the floor. They will be debated "if there is time."

The petitions address specific clauses in church law. They include lifting the ban on gay preachers, deleting the word "heterosexual" from the definition of marriage and removing the statement, "The practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching."

Regardless of how the petitions fare, nothing will happen soon. Church law cannot be changed on a state level, and the national conference, which meets every four years, doesn't reconvene until 2012. In fact, if the petitions fail to make it to the floor, supporters can reintroduce them at next year's state conference.

So sad, it was the church of my youth.

Unfortunately they are not the same church anymore.

They lost me when they started using the slogan, Open Hearts, Open Minds.

I will always have an open heart. my faith dictates that, but an open mind, no, there are some things that are wrong.

Except they cannot overcome The Church Universal-the one with no walls - the Body of Christ worldwide. Of that, they can have no part.

Methodists ought to take a look at what has happened to the UCC, the PiskyUSAs, and the ELCAs. Three churches bent on self-destruction. Sure methodists--go ahead and bitch up your thing just like these other apostate losers. A tree is known by its fruits.

yet again the homosexuals have infiltrated yet another church

even on here someone said that she now has no problem with homosexuals because she got to know one from church who just joined

this crap had better stop and those making crap excuses saying well I know one and he is nice has better wake up as those who say well I’m not bothered as they are not affecting me.

it’s not marriage they want it’s a complete agenda if those people look at the bigger picture and wake the hell up

homosexuals and the far left , commies have been targeting the church for decades as they know if they break the traditional family then they will get their agenda passed.

the normal family is the biggest enemy of the far elft, commies and the homosexuals.

one only has to look at the commie manifesto to see how they are trying to get their agenda passed so when people say they’re conservative but have no problem with the queers then I suggest they read that manifesto as they are helping commies

With the United Methodists it's clearly a question of the financial wellbeing of their retirement program.

These guys want gay preachers paying in because, in the end, there will be little pay out to these guys (due to their shorter lifespans).

To say that the ambition is clearly immoral would be the least you could say of it.

I tell you, all you need to do is talk this over with a Fidelity (or or other fine annuity) broker to find out what the deal is all about.

Who's Who of theologically squishy churches with whom the ELCA is in full communion

I like Gene Edward Veith's wry comment:

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America did more at their convention than affirm homosexuality. The delegates also voted to extend full pulpit, altar, and every other kind of fellowship with the United Methodist Church.

. . . .

The ELCA is saying that it agrees with and will no longer criticize Calvinists AND Arminians AND the social gospel AND pietists AND moralists AND congregationalists AND episcopalians AND liturgists AND anti-liturgists AND people who believe in sacraments AND people who don’t believe in sacraments. So what is left that is distinctively LUTHERAN in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America?

It ain't anything Luther and the Bible would assert, that's for certain.

I’ve stopped going to church due to how the C of E started going liberal

my kids and I say our prayers when we want and we help who we want and donate to who we want.
If I find a church (wife was thinking baptist) then maybe I’ll go back

The Methodists are up to theur eyeballs in closeted, and not-so-closeted gay ministers. They’ve been lying about it and promoting themselves from within for years.

Why not just throw away the Bible and make it up as you go along. If it feels good just do it!

The difference with the UMC is that the conservative movement has been organized and strong for at least three decades.

The “Good News Movement” has its own publications and receives funding and other support from the Institute for Religion and Democracy (IRD). For reasons unknown to me the IRD has never had any interest in influincing the ecclesial politics of the ELCA.

Moreover, Asbury Seminary is a bastion of orthodoxy. That cannot be said of ANY of the ELCA Seminaries.

Emendation: Make that A list of mostly theologically squishy churches with whom the ELCA is in full communion.

The Moravians and the Reformed Church need to cut ties ASAP. It's not spiritually healthy to have full communion with a wolf in sheep's clothing.

OK, I looked at the churches listed on the first website you listed. Tell me more about the “Reformed Church” — is their logo a cross and a martini (complete with olive)?

The ELCA’s actions on promoting homosexuality and universal salvation have resulted in the birth of many Scripture-based churches by the many who have left the ELCA for their movement away from Scripture and to political correctness.

Even more so, the gaystapo won’t be satisfied until EVERYONE WHO DISAGREES WITH THEM is DESTROYED.
