How About a Good Catholic Story?
The Wall Street Journal ^ | May 20, 2010 | Daniel Henninger

Here's something you don't read every day: a positive story about the Catholic Church. Amid the media brimstone and penitential outpourings, much of organized Catholicism proceeds with its mission. This is one corner of that mission that is helping young men and women.

On June 10, Cristo Rey High School in East Harlem will graduate all of its 50 seniors. All come from families near or below the poverty level. All will attend college. Most were accepted into seven colleges.

Begun in 1996 with the goal of making its students ready to attend college, the Cristo Rey Network now has 24 high schools...

~snip~

Virtually all students in the network's schools are Latino or African-American. St. Martin de Porres High School in Cleveland, my hometown, is near St. Clair Avenue and 55th Street, a hard neighborhood. Its college-acceptance rate this year was also 100%.

~snip~

This is not the miracle of the loaves and the fishes. It is a system that works, literally. The system's financial support model, which pays students to work, is surely one of the most innovative ideas seen in awhile in American education.

Every student at a Cristo Rey high school works full time one day a week with a local private company or not-for-profit. For entry-level work—real work, not make-work—the companies pay student teams between $20,000 (Denver) and $30,000 (Washington, D.C.). That money goes into the school's annual budget.

The employer gets a Cristo Rey student every day of the week, freshmen through seniors. So on a Tuesday, the school might assemble all the sophomores and shepherd them to work, and gather them in at day's end. This means the students have to do five days of school work in four days, and that alone may have a lot to do with the success rate.

Not quite a homeschooling story, but certainly an alternative-to-public-school story that puts the public schools to real shame.

That would certainly be an improvement, and I would surely support a move in that direction. However...Doing this will NOT fix socialist government schooling.

Socialist-funded schools are still **socialist** even if the district was the size of suburban housing subdivision. Regardless of how local or small the socialist school district the following happens:

1) The voting mob would still have the power to impose its worldview on other people’s children and have government police power to force their neighbors pay for it.

2) The children learn to be comfortable with socialism. They learn ( simply by attending) that the government has the power to take money from their neighbor to pay for a service their parents want for tuition-free.

3) In government schools the children learn that government workers can violate every First Amendment right. They ordered to shut up, can not freely publish, can not freely assemble, and their right to freely express their religion is greatly suppressed. In many ways government schools teach children to be compliant prisoners of the fascist state.

4) Government schools, if they attempt to promote religious belief, can at best, offer up a lukewarm generic religiousity that can be palatible to the majority of the voters. Well...We know what Christ does with the lukewarm. He spits them out of His mouth!

5) The other alternative is to have secular government schools that teach children throughout the school day to think godlessly! Now...THAT is EVIL!

Therefore...All government schools on all levels must be shut down and we must move to complete privatization of K-12 schooling with charity paying for the poor.

By the way...Colleges and universities in our nation have enodowments in the BILLIONS! Harvard alone has an endowment of 35 BILLION!

If government had never disrupted the private school K-12 markets by opening socialist-funded government schools in the mid-1800s to early 1900s, K-12 schooling would be equally endowed. By now, likely every child in the U.S. could be attending **private** TUITION-FREE K=12 schools that would be funded through charitable endowments.

In fact, we are wealthy enough as a nation, that perhaps every child in the world could now be attending conservative private K-12 schools.

Yuri Besmenov WARNED us. Our nation is now nearly completely “demoralized”! Next step: Destabilization!

With privately endowed, tuition-free, **conservative** private, K-12 schooling we could be RE-moralizing the world, instead of constantly fighting back the Marxist legislation of the minute.
