Yes. It is hideously written and cleary not edited. This woman would fail my freshman English class.

Jeesh ... “clearly.” No caffeine = fumbling fingers.

(But that doesn’t let Miss Smith off the hook. Lack of caffeine can’t explain her.)

Exactly, which is what I said all along. Before I even knew that it was a transcript of a speech, I said it was “conversational.” It was very obvious to me, and I liked it.

You people need to get a life(LOL). Just take the information and quit being nit-pickers.

Second, I just cannot help but think that the reality that the Muslims are outbreeding Christians by a huge margin is some kind of divine consequence for ignoring God’s admonition to be fruitful and multiply.

Precisely.

We see this time and time again. When we ignore what God has told us, we find that it eventually harms us.

It’s what she says that interests me, not necessarily the way that she says it. I found something beautiful in the paragraph I posted to you.

I’d be happy to, but I can’t actually find the information in it.

As my late father in law used to say, "that's why they make chocolate and vanilla...". I found it bothersome, but will certainly read it.

I will be curious to see if there is more to her rationale than "contraception causes bad things to happen, so the church must be right". In many cases scripture makes it clear that there are good things and bad things that come from our actions. Scripture is very clear that having children is a wonderful blessing from God. Personally I feel a bit sad for my two siblings who each have one child. My wife and I have 5. Our youngest is adopted, and if my feelings for her are any indication of how our Lord feels about having adopted us through Jesus Christ it is something amazing.

But God making it clear that you will be blessed is very different than God saying "Thou shall". When I skimmed it I didn't see any biblical rationale.

I'll find out and we can discuss.

God's blessing to you.

God’s blessing to you, too! The Lord only gave me one and how I wished that it were not that way. It’s great that you adopted too. We talked about it and talked but just never got around to it and it’s something I still feel sad about.

Meanwhile, my “only” thinks it’s great since he doesn’t know anything else. Also, my husband was betrayed by his siblings in a very evil manner so maybe siblings aren’t all they’re always cracked up to be... I think Abel might agree.

While you are trying to be sarcastic, you obviously did not read it. There was quite a bit of information in there. Now whether you agree with the info, or do not think it is useful for your purposes, that is one thing, but there was a ton of info in there.

Meanwhile, I note that you said that person would fail your freshman English class. LOL! The piece was a transcript of a talk. Also, I went back to college a few years ago and I can tell you that judging by what I see in the papers written by the college students, that that piece (even transcribed as it was) is far better than the works I read. They can’t punctuate, spell, or write sentences well.

If “they” aren’t passing “your” freshman English class, then how are they getting into college?

I think I will just say, we are considering adopting a very special 5 yr old.

He is a joy and since we can not have children, we think this is a good move............but it is such a darn hard decision.

We want to do what is right for Michael.

“Obviously” insofar as I stated I didn’t read it. So yeah. I’m willing to concede that there might be a wealth of information therein, but if one wants to get a message across, the onus is on the messenger to make it accessible, not on the reader to ferret that message out.

Also, I’m not responsible for the end product of high schools. As a college-level teacher, I was only responsible for teaching them what I could their first year of college.

One more point: don’t be so quick to assume sarcasm from disagreement. I wasn’t being sarcastic at all. I was being honest ... this is a badly written piece, direly in need of editing.

Maybe you should edit it. Of course, then you’d have to read it. :)

Okay; it’s hard to determine “tone” in these forums. As an English teacher, you should be well aware of that. In fact, it’s probably the thing I hate most. People emphasize and accent words and depending on how it is done, the meaning changes. Gotta love English! Even something as innocuous as “Oh, baby” can mean at least three different things depending on how it is said.

I just think you are being overly critical.

Thank you for clarifying. I thought you taught freshman English in high school. I was making a point and it wasn’t reflective of you personally. You might be the teacher of the century for all I know.

Incidentally, for whatever it’s worth, I completely disagree with you about the author’s responsibility. If I follow your logic, I would never read my Bible, which is sometimes very cryptic and symbolic and the message is sometimes difficult to ascertain (e.g. Revelation). I am sure some people might likewise critique Joyce’s Ulysses, or Shakespeare or Beowulf. So, do you really believe what you said about the onus being on the messenger? I think the reader has a little responsibility too.
