Litany of Humility

Rafael Cardinal Merry del Val

O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me.

From the desire of being esteemed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being loved, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being extolled, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being honored, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being praised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being preferred to others, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being consulted, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being approved, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the fear of being humiliated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being despised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of suffering rebukes, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being calumniated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being forgotten, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being ridiculed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being wronged, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being suspected, Deliver me, Jesus.

That others may be loved more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be esteemed more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That, in the opinion of the world, others may increase and I may decrease,Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be chosen and I set aside, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be praised and I unnoticed, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be preferred to me in everything, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may become holier than I,
provided that I may become
as holy as I should, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

Closing Prayer

Dominicus Gabriel Mariae

O most gracious Lord Jesus:
To redeem an undeserving humanity
You gave up everything you had.

In your mercy, grant us the grace
of despising all things but you
and your love

That we may know the joy
you brought to us
through your dolorous Passion
and Death,

Who live and reign in might and bliss
with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
One God, in everlasting glory.

In my view one of the reasons God gave us each other is so we could get each other’s back. Not all of us are going to pray every day. Some of us are going to pray a LOT every day. We take care of each other, that’s how I see it.

THANK you. Isn’t it a wonderful, though frightening, prayer?

TO me it makes clear that loving Jesus involves a kind of detachment from being all hung about about moi.

Maybe if I pray it 1,000 years I’ll stop being so all about me.

Tax Chick and all y’all:
My confuser decided to have a nervous breakdown this AM. SO I went to church, and when I came back it let me get online.

Go figger.

Anyway, I had an idea. Today maybe we could pray a little for the person on our side of the conversation who is, maybe, a little over the top sometimes. And we could pray for whatever gifts would be necessary to help one another make the conversation useful and productive as well as a strong witness to the love of God which can overcome even my asininity!

I cannot adequately express what this “some-ena” means to me. The Holy Spirit is generous to the point of extravagance. I praise God for his shaken down, pressed together, running over gifts to us.

Bless you all.

May God bless you both richly with laughter and charity and a walk ever nearer to Him. Thank you so much for participating in this thread. This is very precious to me.

Thanks for the ping. I think I will pray this Litany every day when I start back to work in September. I worry constantly about a very negative, critical co-worker and this prayer gets to the heart of the matter. The lines regarding fear are especially meaningful.

Lord, my desire to be liked and approved of, and my fear of being criticized, show a lack of faith and trust in You. Help me to grow in my faith and humility.

It is very encouraging to witness how many care so much for others spiritual and physical well being.
It seems to me testimony that the Holy Spirit fills us and joins all with His Peace and Love.

I would like to be able to say something more meaningful than “Thank you,” (though my thanks are quite sincere), but when I took my brain in for maintenance they left the winter oil in, and it’s got too low an SAE number for my brain to function in this heat. I’m afraid I’ll burn it out. I already need a ring job or something as it is ....

To me this Litany is so convicting! Which, I hasten to add, is a good thing. I am SO wrapped up in what others think of me it’s pathetic. To confront my failure truly to put all my hope in God is bracing. I know more and more what to pray for.

Good morning! This is your east coast heatwave wake up call.

Be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands.
Serve the Lord with gladness
And come into His presence with a song.

But if you can’t manage a song just yet, yawning is okay.
