Matrimony
Holy Orders
Extreme Unction (Annointing of the Sick)

Notes:
A Sacrament is defined as "an outward sign of inward grace" which was instituted by Christ Himself and receives its power from God, through the merits of Christ.

Baptism and Penance are known as the "Sacraments of the Dead" because before receiving them when needed, we are dead in sin.

Confirmation, Holy Eucharist, Extreme Unction, Holy Orders, and Matrimony are known as the "Sacraments of the Living" because one must be in a state of grace to receive them licitly and receive their fruits; they give additional grace to souls already spiritually alive.

Matrimony and Holy Orders are known as the "Social Sacraments" because they are designed primarily for the benefit of society and confer a social status.

Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders are the three Sacraments which leave an indelible mark on the recipient's soul and can never be repeated.

Even though this is focused on Catholics, because it just seems to be a list of lists for Catholics -- I am posting it as an open thread because I think there is much room for discussion on some of these topics.

yikes...reading this list set the hairs on the back of my neck straight up...13 years catholic school...with the last 9 at a German Roman Catholic Orphanage.

I wonder if the 14 Holy Helpers really s/b 13 as St. Christopher (if he even existed) went “poof” into the night)

This is why I keep telling people who were baptized a Catholic that they are still a Catholic.

The 9 Choirs of Angels

Saint Michael, appearing one day to Antonia d'Astonac, a most devout Servant of God, told her that he wished to be honored by nine salutations corresponding to the nine Choirs of Angels, which should consist of one Our Father and three Hail Marys in honor of each of the Angelic Choirs.

Promises of St. Michael

Whoever would practice this devotion in his honor would have, when approaching the Holy Table, an escort of nine angels chosen from each of the Choirs. In addition, for the daily recital of these nine salutations, he promised his continual assistance and that of all the holy angels during life, and after death deliverance from Purgatory for themselves and all their relations.

How to say this Chaplet

The chaplet begins with the invocation on the medal. Then say one Our Father and three Hail Marys after each of the nine salutations in honor of the nine Choir of Angels as follows

Invocation on the Medal
O God, come to my assistance! O Lord, make haste to help me! Glory be to the Father........etc.

First Salutation
By the intercession of St. Michael and the heavenly Choir of Seraphim, may it please God to make us worthy to receive into our hearts the fire of his perfect charity. Amen.
(1 Our Father and 3 Hail Marys)

Second Salutation
By the intercession of St. Michael and the heavenly Choir of Cherubim, may God in his good pleasure, grant us grace to abandon the ways of sin, and follow the path of Christian perfection. Amen.
(1 Our Father and 3 Hail Marys)

Third Salutation
By the intercession of St. Michael and the sacred Choir of Thrones, may it please God to infuse into our hearts the spirit of true and sincere humility. Amen.
(1 Our Father and 3 Hail Marys)

Fourth Salutation
By the intercession of St. Michael and the heavenly Choir of the Dominations, may it please God to grant us grace to have dominion over our senses, and to correct our depraved passions. Amen.
(1 Our Father and 3 Hail Marys)

Fifth Salutation
By the intercession of St. Michael and the heavenly Choir of the Powers, may God vouchsafe to keep our souls from the wiles and temptations of the devil. Amen.
(1 Our Father and 3 Hail Marys)

Sixth Salutation
By the intercession of St. Michael and the admirable heavenly Choir of the Virtues, may it please God to keep us from falling into temptation, and may He deliver us from evil. Amen.
(1 Our Father and 3 Hail Marys)

Seventh Salutation
By the intercession of St. Michael and the heavenly Choir of Principalities, may it please God to fill our souls with the spirit of true and sincere obedience. Amen.
(1 Our Father and 3 Hail Marys)

Eighth Salutation
By the intercession of St. Michael and the heavenly Choir of Archangels, may it please God to grant us the gift of perseverance in the faith, and in all good works, that we may be thereby enabled to attain the glory of paradise. Amen.
(1 Our Father and 3 Hail Marys)

Ninth Salutation
By the intercession of St. Michael and the heavenly Choir of all the Angels, may God vouchsafe to grant us their guardianship through this mortal life, and after death a happy entrance into the everlasting glory of heaven. Amen
(1 Our Father and 3 Hail Marys)

Say an Our Fathers on each of the four large concluding beads:
The first one to St. Michael,
The second one to St. Gabriel,
The third one to St. Raphael,
The fourth one to our Guardian Angel.

End this Chaplet with the following Anthem and prayer.

Anthem
Michael, glorious prince, chief and champion of the heavenly Host, guardian of the souls of men, conqueror of the rebel angels, steward of the palace of God under Jesus Christ, our worthy leader, endowed with superhuman excellence and virtues: vouchsafe to free us all from every ill, who with full confidence have recourse to thee; and by thy incomparable protection enable us to make progress every day in the faithful service of our God. V. Pray for us, most blessed Michael, Prince of the Church of Jesus Christ. R. That we may be made worthy of his promises.

Prayer
Almighty and Eternal God, who is thine own marvelous goodness and pity didst, for the common salvation of man, choose the glorious Archangel Michael to be the prince of the Church: make us worthy, we pray Thee, to be delivered by his beneficent protection from all our enemies, that, at the hour of our death, none of them may approach to harm us; rather do Thou vouchsafe unto us that by the same Archangel Michael, we may be introduced into the presence of thy most high and divine majesty. Through the merits of the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

I thought the list was interesting for the inclusion of “the 15 Mysteries of the Rosary”. Following the links lead to an article I hadn’t seen written at the time Pope John Paul II added 5 more mysteries. I didn’t realize that there was such a controversy about these new Mysteries. I live a very sheltered life.

“Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.” -Revelation 1:7

“For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:” -John 5:22

“And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be judge of quick and dead.” -Acts 10:42

“And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.” -Luke 1:33
And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life;

“Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.” -John 14:17

“Now the Lord is that Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” -II Corinthians 3:17

“Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied to men but to God.” -Acts 5:3,4

“Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” -John 3:5

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;” -Titus 3:5

who proceeds from the Father; who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets.

“But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:” -John 15:26

“If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” -Luke 11:13

“Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:” -Matthew 28:19

“For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” -II Peter 1:21

And I believe in one holy universal and apostolic Church.

“Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.” -John 17:20-23

“I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism; One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.” -Ephesians 4:1-6

“And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.” -Colossians 1:18

“To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven,” -Hebrews 12:23

“...they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.” -Revelation 21:27

“...and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life.” -Philippians 4:3

“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” -Matthew 18:20

“And to our beloved Apphia, and Archippus our fellowsoldier, and to the church in thy house:” -Philemon 1:2

“Likewise greet the church that is in their house.” -Romans 16:5

“But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.” -I Timothy 3:15

“And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;” -Ephesians 2:20

“And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.” -Acts 2:42

I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins;

“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:” -Matthew 28:18,19

“One Lord, one faith, one baptism,” -Ephesians 4:5

“For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” -Galatians 3:27

“For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.” -Matthew 26:28

“And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.” -Luke 24;47

“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” -Acts 2:38

“The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:” -I Peter 3:21

“Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” -Romans 6:3,4

and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

“Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?” -1 Corinthians 15:12

“For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.” -1 Corinthians 15:21,22

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” -John 3:16

“But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” -1 Corinthians 2:9

“For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be the glory for ever. Amen.” -Romans 11:36

This is why I keep telling people who were baptized a Catholic that they are still a Catholic

If I can't post in Catholic caucus threads, I am not a Catholic :-)

But very seriously, I renounce my Catholicism and there is nothing the RC church can do about it. I'm bought and paid for and they have no access to my soul.

THANK YOU so very, very much for this list!!! These links are absolutely fabulous. I am a convert to the Catholic Church - 14 years now........I learn something new each and every single day.

Just as an aside - our oldest son got married this past Saturday night - beautiful Catholic Mass.....holy, blessed, inspirational.....Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. We love our new daughter-in-law, too - which is such a blessing.

Thanks again for compiling this list.

Oh, I remember having to learn some of those lists during my 12 years of Catholic school. I wonder if students today are being taught even a tenth of what my generation was taught.

My father was a fallen-away Catholic. (I was never really told why by my mother who was quite devout.) I have no memory of his attending Mass ever, but he always carried a St. Christopher medal. (And, fortunately, he did request Last Rites when he was dying in the hospital.)

I know that I have told you before in a post about how beautiful was my mother’s Annointing of the Sick about a week before she died.

Last month, we attended a family reunion with many of my cousins. While there, one of my sisters and I told the story to one of my cousins whose mother was in failing health. That cousin and her siblings lost their mother last week, but they, too, were able to gather around their mother one last time as she was annointed. And, like us, experienced great joy in their sorrow because of the sacrament.

It is so precious — so wonderful a sacrament.

Think of all the people that Christ healed as they were dying. The blind man, the hemmoraging woman, the Widow of Nain’s son — God’s doing, not Christ.

The paralytic lowered by his friends in front of Jesus. There are many others.

I especially liked reading “The 3 Levels of Reverence” and I think it clarifies the honor we give to saints, the greater honor we give to Mary as the greatest saint, and the devotion which belongs to God alone.
