Seek after meekness Posted on July 13, 2010 by billrandles
Seek ye Jehovah, all ye meek of the earth, that have kept his ordinances; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye will be hid in the day of Jehovahs anger.(Zephaniah 2:3)
Zephaniah is a prophet of the day of the Lord. That is, the day of Divine intervention. It is an awful day;
The great day of the LORD is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the LORD: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly. That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness.(Zephaniah1:14-15)
The very name , Zephaniah is a message, for it means Hidden in Jahweh , the very promise given in the opening verse of this article.
But the promise is conditional, perhaps you will be hidden . Therefore the God-fearing remnant are advised to seek the Lord, also to seek righteousness, and finally to seek after meekness.
To seek after the Lord; His will, His word, His counsel, His presence, should be our lives pursuit anyway, but one of the problems of the last days is that men forget God. Even among the godly, the world exerts a special kind of soul deadening effect such as was true in the last days of Sodom and Gomorrah.
Seek after Righteousness also, is the counsel of the prophet to those of us chosen to be here in the time of the Day of the LORD. We are to actively pursue God pleasing ways, to be a witness to the World that has hated and spurned all righteousness.
I see hopeful things like the homeschooling movement and the return to the God assigned marital roles, as examples of Christians seeking after Righteousness. They are attempting to construct their lives on the foundation of the Word of Christ, and rejecting the ways of the world that we have all been immersed in, for the most part.
And finally, in view of the promise to perhaps be hidden in the day of the Lord, we are counseled to seek after meekness. Who are the meek? What characteristics are we being counseled to seek after?
Meekness is how the Lord Jesus described himself. I am meek and lowly . Therefore it couldnt possibly be weakness of character. In what sense was Jesus meek? We see the meekness of Jesus in His trial before Pilate. He would not justify himself,(though he could have), He would not lash out in self-defense, nor did he revile his false accusers, rather he committed himself entirely to God,
For hereunto were you called: For Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps,Who did no sin, nor was any guile in his mouth,Who when He was reviled, he reviled not again, when He suffered, he threatened not,but committed Himself to Him who judgeth righteously.(1 Peter 2:21-23)
This is the kind of character God calls for in view of the day of the Lord. It is the opposite of the defiant pride, self-sufficiency, in your face arrogance that is so prevalent to our day.
Moses , we are told, was meek above all the men of the earth. Even when he was falsely accused , and opposed by the various factions that rose up, his recourse was always to appeal to the Lord himself. And in his meekness, even when people threatened to kill him, he always prayed for them.
Psalm 37 is a Psalm that describes the kind of meekness fit for the remnant, hidden in Jahweh,
We are not to fret, not to be anxious, never to yield to anger, though there will be a strong temptation to do all of the above. But the meek trust in God, and commit their way to Him, they are tempered by their faith in Him.
The cross is the source of this meekness. The one who is meek, has been broken by the knowledge of his own profound sinfulness, and is in awe of the love of the One who died for his pardon! He knows where he came from and where God is taking him.
Do not fret because of evil men or be envious of those who do wrong; for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away.
Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.
Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret when men succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fretit leads only to evil.
For evil men will be cut off, but those who hope in the LORD will inherit the land. A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found.
But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy great peace(Psalm 37:1-12)
Another wonderful gem found in Zephaniah.......
Did you know the Lord sings over you?
Zephaniah 3:17 (New International Version)
“The LORD your God is with you,
he is mighty to save.
He will take great delight in you,
he will quiet you with his love,
he will rejoice over you with singing.”
One of the most beautiful images in scripture- thank you Joyell!
