Every Mouth Silenced Romans 3 Posted on August 10, 2010 by billrandles Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.(Romans 3: 19-20)
We come to the conclusion of the teaching of Romans 1-3, which is the universality of sin. All are condemned as sinners by the Holy God.
The references cited in the indictment all come from the law. Pauls logic is that since these are references from Gods law, they are addressed to those under the law, the none of None Righteous includes Jews as well as gentiles.
What can we say, but All the world is guilty before God. There has not been one among us who has perfectly obeyed, all of us have broken faith with our Creator. The indictment rings out,There is no fear of God before our eyes.
We are told that every mouth will be stopped. This refers to the coming Judgment day of God, when not only the deeds. but the very motives and even the secrets of mens hearts shall be revealed. (Romans 2:11)
For the time being, all men talk. They raise complaints against the justice and love of God in a multitude of ways. If God is so Loving, how could children starve in this world?. Or ,If God is really Just, how could he allow prejudice and injustice in His world?.
Daily Gods goodness is questioned by sinners, He is challenged to answer for himself by men. They demand of Him, Where was God on 9-11, when Muslim terrorists murdered 3000 innocent people as they worked in their offices?
(In truth, in the light of our sinfulness, the national allowance of evils such as abortion and homosexuality, and in view of the Holiness of our God, the real question should be ,Why hasnt there been a 9-11 every single day?.)
But dont think that such complaints against the Holy God, go un-noticed, and will not be answered on the day of revelation. On that day every mouth will be silenced and all the world will become guilty before God.
People speak commonly against Him when they offer justification and excuse for their sin. Psychology, for example, has given man a ready excuse for his sins, in fact it has erased the whole concept of sin, and the resulting true moral guilt.
Adam and Eve werent raised in a dysfunctional home, their Iniquity ,like ours is willful, mysterious, treachery against God. Jesus didnt ask the woman caught in the act of adultery about her relationship with her father!
The point is , we dont now possess more insight into the human condition than The Hebrew prophets, the apostles and Jesus. Certainly godless Atheists such as Freud, Maslow or mystics like Jung havent taught us anything real!
Mans problem is that He has sinned, he is truly guilty,(not suffering from guilt feelings). His sins are against his God, and only some kind of reconciliation to God can heal man. Something has to be done about the guilt of sin.
On the day when every mouth will be stopped it will be because man will see this very clearly. Racism, poverty, society, the rich, in short none of the usual excuses will even be uttered because of the clarity of the day. All will simply justify God on that day.
Another thing will be evident on that solemn day, and that is that no system of good works will suffice to save us from Gods wrath.
By the works of the Law will no flesh be justified, for by the law is the knowledge of sin
Any effort at self-justification will be revealed to be inadequate, because the standard is perfection, therefore even if someone spent their whole life attempting to keep the law and succeeded 99 percent of the time, they would be condemned none-the-less. One sin is enough to damn us forever.
The Law is spiritual anyway, so even external obedience doesnt make up for inner sins. It isnt enough not to commit an act of adultery, because looking at a woman to lust after her is adultery, who is exempted from condemnation for that?
Who has been able 100 per cent to keep the tenth commandment Thou shalt not Covet? Can honestly anyone say that they have never once desired something that God didnt want them to have?
The Law beautiful and helpful as it is, only shows us the reality of sin, it doesnt cleanse us from it. The human race is in need and the law cannot totally answer to it,although it does point us to the answer.
The book, it is marked.
Thank You for taking us through the Book Of Romans, Pastor Bill.
It is not an easy book, but very rich and liberating!
I really enjoy your studies.
"Whosever is guilty of one of the least of these commandments is guilty of them all" That scripture was the one that woke me up and thereafter, with the assistance of A Pastor who worked for us, I gave my life to the Lord. There is no escape from being guilty of them all! Even the least of the commandments broken.....there is no hope by ones works for "all have fallen short of the glory of God".
