Mormonism Isn't Christian
Mormon Home Evening ^ | April 20, 2007 | Rocky Hulse

Posted on 09/08/2010 6:32:01 PM PDT by Gamecock

How dare we make such a bold claim; and, how rude and unChristian! Well, do we make that claim to be mean, or because we have a "bone to pick?" 1 John 4:1 says: Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 1 Thes 5:21 says: Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. So, we are being quite Biblical in comparing Mormon doctrines to see if they align with the Bible. Let's compare Mormonism to the "Eight Essential Fundamentals of Christianity":

1. The Deity of Christ
2. Trinity
3. Bodily Resurrection
4. Salvation by Grace
5. Sufficiency of Scripture
6. Universality of Sin
7. The Atonement
8. The Virgin Birth

So, how many of the eight does Mormonism agree with:
ZERO!

We don't make open-ended statements, so here is the evidence to back up our claim that Mormonism doesn't line up with the "Eight Essential Fundamentals of Christianity":

1. Deity of Christ: “Jesus became a God and reached His great state of understanding through consistent effort and continuous obedience to all the Gospel truths and universal laws.” (The Gospel Through The Ages, pg 51)

[Christianity does not believe Jesus was “a God;” Christianity believes Jesus was God: John 1:1.]

2. Trinity: “22. The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man’s; the Son also; but the Holy Ghost has not a body of flesh and bones, but is a personage of Spirit. Were it not so, the Holy Ghost could not dwell in us.” (Doctrine and Covenants 130:22)

“God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens! That is the great secret.” (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith pg 345, 1844)

[Christianity believes in the Trinity – Mormonism believes in three Gods of this world and that there are an untold number of other Gods out there in the cosmos; and, that the Heavenly Father of this world is an exalted man who once lived on another planet in another galaxy far, far away and through eternal progression rose to become a God]

3. Bodily Resurrection: “The plan is simple. Man is in a fallen condition, beset with weaknesses and sin. Means are provided whereby he may rise, and, through the corridors of death and the portals of the resurrection, reach the way of eternal progression. These means are all comprised in obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.” (The Vitality of Mormonism, Ch.19, p.77-p.78, Apostle James E. Talmage)

[Christianity believes man will be resurrected to live eternally with Jesus Christ or to be condemned to Hell. Mormonism believes there is no Hell and man will be resurrected into 3 different Kingdoms of Heaven. Only Mormons can go to the top kingdom, called the Celestial Kingdom, and there they can by “Eternal Progression” become Gods just like the Mormon Heavenly Father of this earth did.]

4. Salvation by Grace: “However, one of the untrue doctrines found in modern Christendom is the concept that man can gain salvation (meaning in the kingdom of God) by grace alone and without obedience. This soul-destroying doctrine has the obvious effect of lessening the determination of an individual to conform to all of the laws and ordinances of the gospel,…” (Mormon Doctrine, pp. 670-671, 1958)

[Salvation by grace alone, in Christ alone, through faith alone, is a foundational Christian teaching. Mormon Apostle Bruce McConkie in his epic book “Mormon Doctrine” calls the Christian belief an “untrue” and “soul-destroying doctrine.”]

5. Sufficiency of Scripture: “Who, in his right mind, could, for one moment, suppose the Bible in its present form to be a perfect guide? Who knows that even one verse of the Bible has escaped pollution?” (Divine Authenticity of the Book of Mormon, Orson Pratt, pg 47)

[Christianity believes the Bible is God’s inerrant Word for man. Mormonism believes the Bible “as far as it is translated correctly.” Anytime the Bible disagrees with Mormon Doctrine, it has been mistranslated, and “Who knows that even one verse of the Bible has escaped pollution?”]

6. Universality of sin: “Some may regret that our first parents sinned. This is nonsense. If we had been there, and they had not sinned, we should have sinned. I will not blame Adam or Eve, why? Because it was necessary that sin should enter the world; no man could ever understand the principle of exaltation without its opposite;…” (Journal of Discourses, Vol 10, pg 312, Brigham Young)

[Christianity teaches that all have sinned and in fact have a sin nature. Christianity teaches that the heart of man is wickedly deceitful (Jer 17:9), and all of our righteousness is as “filthy rags” (Isa 64:6), and only through our Savior, the Jesus Christ of the Bible, can we be saved from our sin. Mormonism teaches that Adam and Eve were required to eat of the fruit of the tree and it was not therefore a sin – that man is good and comes to earth to prove himself and earn his right to progress to become a God himself.]

7. The Atonement: “It is true that the blood of the Son of God was shed for sins through the fall and those committed by men, yet men can commit sins which it can never remit.” (Journal of Discourses, Vol 4, pg 54, Brigham Young)

[Christianity teaches that the blood of Jesus covers all sin (1 John 1:7). Mormonism believes man can commit sins which Jesus’ blood can never remit.]

8. The Virgin Birth: “These name-titles all signify that our Lord is the only Son of the Father in flesh. Each of the words is to be understood literally. Only means only; Begotten means begotten; and Son means son. Christ was begotten by an Immortal Father in the same way that mortal men are begotten by mortal fathers.” (Mormon Doctrine, 1966, pp. 546-547)

[Christianity believes in the miracle of Christ’s birth (Mt 1:18). Mormonism relegates the conception of Jesus to “same way that mortal men are begotten by mortal fathers.” Believing that the Mormon Heavenly Father has a body of flesh and bones, it is easy to see how Mormon leaders teach that God had a physical relationship with Mary to produce Jesus.]

So, are we being mean by saying that Mormonism isn’t Christian. No, we are not. Our claim is based on a factual comparison of Mormon doctrines compared to Christian doctrines. We didn’t make this evidence up. This evidence plus volumes of additional evidence to support these Mormon doctrinal positions are available if one simply wants to do the research to find them. Christianity and Mormonism are not the same. Mormonism fails all “8 Essential Fundamentals of Christianity,” yet insists that it really is Christian.

“The proof really is in the pudding!”

Ping - Mormonism is absolutely not Christian

In fact, Mormonism diverts entirely from true Christian Bible doctrine, itself be doctrine of devils:

1 Timothy 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith [Joseph Smith], giving head to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils

What in the world does anything you said have to do with whether mormonism is compatible with biblical Christian doctrine? Beating a straw man doesn’t advance your argument.

Oh looky another Anti-Mormon propaganda thread!

Undecided readers,

As an ex Mormon-basher, I invite everyone to read all of the multitude of Anti-Mormon attack threads and/or comments on this board and then do some research on your own from more than one side of the “issues”.

Is what all these Mormon attack squad people parrot day in and and day out on these boards true? Don’t take their word for it. Find out for yourself. Put forth some effort. You do want the truth right? Prove it.

Read both sides. Talk to both sides. Not just mine. Not just theirs. Make up your own mind.

Here’s a few links to get your started from a different viewpoint. The vast majority of the issues brought up can be found and addressed at http://www.fairlds.org/ I have found but here’s more.

Yeah, Read both sides, just be aware the LDS use the same terms as Christians but don’t mean the same things Christians do. They are DELIBERATELY deceptive in their missionary practices.

BTW, the author of this piece is a good personal friend and was a 5th and 6th generation Mormon (back to the Smith days). He has a great love for the LDS and still has many LDS family and friends. They were also head of the Nauvoo Christian Visitor’s center for several years.

Here are some other links for inquiring minds to check out, that includes you PD (since I don’t for a minute believe you were ever a “Mormon-basher”).

Actually a Christian church burning the Joseph Smith cult book would probably get national media, but Mormons no longer maintain a cult military force so there would not be a physical threat, although there are rumors regarding some deeper, more serious threats to the Mormon empire being dealt with in a suspicious manner.

Mormon Missionary Deception Method:

1. Convince you of their sincerity
2. Trick you into expressing faith first in the Book of Mormon by praying and asking for a sign (this takes you off the objective ground of Biblical truth and puts you into subjective ground of feelings)
3. Convince you that the Bible has errors in its translation
4. Trick you into expressing faith in the prophet Joseph Smith
5. Trick you into expressing faith in the Restoration of the “Gospel” (see Galatians Chapter one)
6. Get you all the way into the baptismal font...

7. ONLY THEN... you will learn the true DEVIANT doctrines of
Mormonism. At this point, it is too late! You only have
feelings as a basis of truth! You will believe anything.

Such as the following “truths” taught in mormonism ...

The 3 Mormon Earth gods:

... The mormon “Heavenly Father” used to be a regular Joe, but became God - his name was Adam. Adam sinned. You will have to swallow that God could sin!
... The Jesus of mormonism was a created spirit being who became one of the three mormon earth gods
... The mormonic Holy Spirit is also a created spirit being. He doesn’t have a body because he is on probation! Yes, he was naughty. He sinned.

... In short, the mormon earth gods are fallen, sinful, created spirit beings.

... and there is more...

The FOURTH Mormon Earth God they don't like to talk about

... The Mormon Heavenly Mother God!

... Yes, it turns out there is a mormonic “Heavenly Mother God!”

... SHE and the father god have sex
... SHE is eternally pregnant
... SHE pops out spirit children who will some day get a human body on earth and can become gods themselves
... SHE is probably not the only godess! Mormons still believe and teach eternal polygamy - sister godesses

The Mormonic Pantheon of Trillions of gods:

... There are TRILLIONS of mormon gods on other planets. No one knows how many. It could be infinite.
... Hindus have approximately 350 million gods. They are pikers compared to mormons!

... How do they get so many gods? They manufacture more all the time:

... Any mormon male can be a God with his own planet, mother goddesses, and spirit kids to worship him.
... Becoming a mormon god means lots of works to attain the god-level. This is why you see mormons working so hard. Now you know why. They have to prove themselves worthy of godhood.
... All the trillions of gods in the mormon pantheon get together regularly over spring break in Kolob Beach to “counsel together”

What will your life be like as a mormon?

... you have to give 10%? - if not, no top level of heaven for you!
... your bishop is there to ask if you gave your FULL tithe - he may ask to see your pay stubs
... your bishop is also there to ask many probing, personal, embarrassing questions
... you will have to complete Masonic Temple rituals that involve strangers touching your private parts
... You will have to wear magic underwear 24/7/365

Once inside the Morg, you have to accept it ALL to move up the chain towards Godhood. This is just the start!

It seems to me Christianity should be judged by the kind of people it turns out. In that respect, the Mormons I know are far more Christian than all the spouters of "true" Christian doctrine that incessantly post anti-Mormon diatribes here.

Proof is in the walk, not in the talk.

If it isn't, I have no use for Jesus Christ.

***It seems to me Christianity should be judged by the kind of people it turns out.***

Let’s not forget that Paul busted out the Galatians for their works righteousness (similar to Mormonism), but when addressing the church in Corinth for sexual immorality he said: “to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ—their Lord and ours.”

Slightly different from your standard.

If you want moralism look towards Mormonism.

If you want redemption go to Christianity.

PS: Let’s not forget we are warned to guard our doctrine.

“It seems to me Christianity should be judged by the kind of people it turns out.”

It seems to me Christianity should be judged by the kind of people that see their need for a Savior. They do not become perfect. No one ever does in this life.

“...the Mormons I know are far more Christian than all the spouters of “true” Christian doctrine that incessantly post anti-Mormon diatribes here.”

Legalism and outward conformity and self-righteousness and worthiness and belief you will become a god are not Christian values.

“Proof is in the walk, not in the talk.”

An outward “walk” based on an inward lie is not proof. An inward true response to the Gospel of Grace AND a life of living it out are both required.

However, if you are going to base than on never condemning a false teaching, you will have to condemn Jesus Christ, the Apostle Paul, the Apostle Peter, Jude, etc. How’s that going to work for you?

“If it isn’t, I have no use for Jesus Christ.”

Christ came to die for the UNGODLY. If you ain’t one of
them, Christ and His Gospel of Grace isn’t for you either.
In that case, you might just be a redneck. No scratch that. In that case, you might just be self-righteousness. If so, mormonism will be a very good fit for you - right up until you die...

“For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.” (Romans 5:8)
