“Chapter 45: The Millennium,” Gospel Principles, (2009),263–67

People on the Earth during the Millennium

A thousand years of peace, love, and joy will begin on the earth at the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. This thousand-year period is called the Millennium. The scriptures and the prophets help us understand what it will be like to live on the earth during the Millennium.

For teachers: The subject of the Millennium sometimes leads people to speculate about ideas that are not found in the scriptures or the teachings of latter-day prophets. As you guide this lesson, be careful to avoid such speculation.

Because of the destruction of the wicked at the Savior’s Second Coming, only righteous people will live on the earth at the beginning of the Millennium. They will be those who have lived virtuous and honest lives. These people will inherit either the terrestrial or celestial kingdom.

During the Millennium, mortals will still live on earth, and they will continue to have children as we do now (see D&C 45:58). Joseph Smith said that immortal beings will frequently visit the earth. These resurrected beings will help with the government and other work. (See Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, sel. Joseph Fielding Smith [1976], 268.)

People will still have their agency, and for a time many will be free to continue with their religions and ideas. Eventually everyone will confess that Jesus Christ is the Savior.

During the Millennium, Jesus will “reign personally upon the earth” (Articles of Faith 1:10). Joseph Smith explained that Jesus will “reign over the Saints and come down and instruct” (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith [2007], 258).

The Work of the Church during the Millennium

There will be two great works for members of the Church during the Millennium: temple work and missionary work. Temple work involves the ordinances that are necessary for exaltation. These include baptism, the laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost, and the temple ordinances—the endowment, temple marriage, and the sealing together of family units.

Many people have died without receiving these ordinances. People on the earth must perform these ordinances for them. This work is now being done in the temples of the Lord. There is too much work to finish before the Millennium begins, so it will be completed during that time. Resurrected beings will help us correct the mistakes we have made in doing research concerning our dead ancestors. They will also help us find the information we need to complete our records. (See Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, comp. Bruce R. McConkie, 3 vols. [1954–56], 2:167, 251–52.)

The other great work during the Millennium will be missionary work. The gospel will be taught with great power to all people. Eventually there will be no need to teach others the first principles of the gospel because “they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord” (Jeremiah 31:34).

Conditions during the Millennium

The Prophet Joseph Smith taught that during the Millennium, “the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory” (Articles of Faith 1:10).

Satan Bound

During the Millennium, Satan will be bound. This means he will not have power to tempt those who are living at that time (see D&C 101:28). The “children shall grow up without sin unto salvation” (D&C 45:58). “Because of the righteousness of [the Lord’s] people, Satan has no power; wherefore, he cannot be loosed for the space of many years; for he hath no power over the hearts of the people, for they dwell in righteousness, and the Holy One of Israel reigneth” (1 Nephi 22:26).

Peace on the Earth

During the Millennium, there will be no war. People will live in peace and harmony together. Things that have been used for war will be turned to useful purposes. “They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more” (Isaiah 2:4; see also Isaiah 11:6–7; D&C 101:26).

Righteous Government

President John Taylor taught: “The Lord will be king over all the earth, and all mankind literally under his sovereignty, and every nation under the heavens will have to acknowledge his authority, and bow to his scepter. Those who serve him in righteousness will have communications with God, and with Jesus; will have the ministering of angels, and will know the past, the present, and the future; and other people, who may not yield full obedience to his laws, nor be fully instructed in his covenants, will, nevertheless, have to yield full obedience to his government. For it will be the reign of God upon the earth, and he will enforce his laws, and command that obedience from the nations of the world which is legitimately his right” (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: John Taylor [2001], 225).

No Death

During the Millennium, there will be no death as we know it. When people have lived to an old age, they will not die and be buried. Instead, they will be changed from their mortal condition to an immortal condition in “the twinkling of an eye.” (See D&C 63:51; 101:29–31.)

All Things Revealed

Some truths have not been revealed to us. All things will be revealed during the Millennium. The Lord said He will “reveal all things—things which have passed, and hidden things which no man knew, things of the earth, by which it was made, and the purpose and the end thereof—things most precious, things that are above, and things that are beneath, things that are in the earth, and upon the earth, and in heaven” (D&C 101:32–34).

Other Millennial Activities

In many ways, life will be much as it is now, except that everything will be done in righteousness. People will eat and drink and will wear clothing. (See Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Brigham Young [1997], 333.) People will continue to plant and harvest crops and build houses (see Isaiah 65:21).

One Final Struggle after the Millennium

At the end of the 1,000 years, Satan will be set free for a short time. Some people will turn away from Heavenly Father. Satan will gather his armies, and Michael (Adam) will gather the hosts of heaven. In this great struggle, Satan and his followers will be cast out forever. The earth will be changed into a celestial kingdom. (See D&C 29:22–29; 88:17–20, 110–15.)

TERMINOLOGY DIFFERENCES

By Sandra Tanner

Introduction

Whenever an evangelical Christian and a Latter-day Saint engage in a doctrinal discussion they encounter the problem of terminology. LDS leaders use the standard vocabulary of Christianity but with radically different definitions. A Christian should never take for granted that his/her LDS friend understands common Christian terms in the biblical way.
Because the Bible has many warnings about false prophets (Matthew 24:11, 24; 2 Corinthians 11:4, 13; 1 John 4:1) and people teaching strange doctrines (2 Peter 2:12; Galatians 1:6-8; Hebrews 13:9), it is essential that we understand what the Bible says on various doctrines.
The references below will demonstrate that the LDS Church is indeed teaching a different god and a counterfeit gospel, thus offering a false hope.
The following list of Christian terms will be defined by LDS sources and then by biblical quotes. While this is not a complete list of terminology differences, it will cover the most basic ones. For a more detailed look at terminology differences, see The Counterfeit Gospel of Mormonism.

Eternal Progression Chart

GODHEAD
LDS: Father & Son are resurrected men with physical bodies. Holy Ghost is a separate man with a spiritual body. Three totally separate Gods. God is married. Other Gods for other worlds. (D&C 130:22; Teachings, pp. 345-346, pp. 370-373; Doctrines of Salvation,v.1, p. 10-12)
BIBLE: God is not a man. (Num. 23:19) He has always been God. (Psa. 90:2; Mal. 3:6; Hab. 1:12; Rom. 1:22-25) Only one God. (Isa. 43:10-11; 44:6; 45:21-22) Father is Spirit and invisible. (John 4:24; 1 Tim. 1:17)
(GODHEAD: click here for complete quotes and references.)
JESUS CHRIST
LDS: Literally our elder brother, born to Heavenly Parents in the premortal life. Jesus, Lucifer and humans are all the same species and are brothers and sisters. (Gospel Principles pp. 11, 17, 18)
BIBLE: Fully God, not a subordinate deity. Eternal. (Isa. 9:6; John 8:58; 1 Tim. 3:16; Heb. 13:8; John 1:1-4, 14; Col. 1:16-17)
(JESUS CHRIST: click here for complete quotes and references.)
PREMORTAL LIFE
LDS: Teach that everyone existed in heaven before born on earth. We have existed eternally. (D&C 93:29; PGP:Bk of Abr 3:21-22; Teachings, pp. 352-354)
BIBLE: Only Christ existed before mortality, not man. (John 8:58; Col. 1:17) Our existence started on earth. (Zec. 12:1; 1 Cor. 15:46)
(PREMORTAL LIFE: click here for complete quotes and references.)
THE FALL
LDS: Fall was a blessing. It brought mortality, ability to have children and physical death. Adam was given conflicting commandments and was supposed to fall. (Doctrines of Salvation Vol. 1, pp. 111-116; Gospel Principles, pp. 31-33; 2 Nephi 2:25; Mormon Doctrine, pp. 268-269)
BIBLE: God intended obedience. Gen. 1:28. God tempts no one. (James 1:13-14). Man is sinful. (Rom. 5:12; 8:5-8; 1 Cor. 2:14)
(THE FALL: click here for complete quotes and references.)
VIRGIN BIRTH
LDS: Believe God, as a resurrected physical man, is literal Father of Jesus—same manner in which men are conceived on earth. Believe Matt. 1:18 is in error. (Mormon Doctrine, pp. 546-547, 742)
BIBLE: Mary was "with child of the Holy Ghost." (Matt. 1:18; Luke 1:30-35)
(VIRGIN BIRTH: click here for complete quotes and references.)
SIN
LDS: Specific acts, not man's basic nature. Must know act is wrong to be a sin. (Mormon Doctrine, pp. 550, 735-736)
BIBLE: We are in spiritual rebellion until conversion. (Eph. 2:3; Rom. 5:6) We do not just commit sins; we are basically sinful. (Matt. 1:21; Jer. 17:9; Luke 5:32)
(SIN: click here for complete quotes and references.)
FORGIVENESS
LDS: Granted at end of process of repentance and reformed behavior (Mormon Doctrine, p. 292-298; Gospel Principles, pp. 75-77, p. 123; Doctrine of Salvation, Vol. 1, p. 133-134)
BIBLE: Complete forgiveness granted the moment we turn to Christ. (Mark 2:5; Col. 2:13-14; Eph. 1:6-7)
(FORGIVENESS: click here for complete quotes and references.)
SALVATION BY GRACE
LDS: Believe Christ's death brought release from grave and universal resurrection. Salvation by grace is universal resurrection. Beyond this, man must earn his place in heaven. Saved by grace after all we can do. (Book of Mormon, 2 Nephi 25:23; Mormon Doctrine pp. 669-671)
BIBLE: Salvation is not limited to universal resurrection but gift of God to those who believe. (Rom. 1:16; Heb. 9:28; Eph. 2:8-9)
(SALVATION BY GRACE: click here for complete quotes and references.)
REDEEMED
LDS: From mortal death only. Not same as Eternal Life. (Doctrine of Salvation, Vol. 2, pp. 10-15)

(REDEEMED: click here for complete quotes and references.)
GOSPEL
LDS: Doctrines and commandments of the LDS Church. True gospel restored by Joseph Smith. (Mormon Doctrine, pp. 331; 334; Doctrine of Salvation, Vol. 1, pp. 156-159)

(GOSPEL: click here for complete quotes and references.)
BORN AGAIN
LDS: Baptism into the LDS Church. (Mormon Doctrine, p. 101)

(BORN AGAIN: click here for complete quotes and references.)
TRUE CHURCH
LDS: Only the Mormon Church. The true church was taken from the earth until Joseph Smith restored it. (D&C 1:30; 115:3, 4; Mormon Doctrine, pp. 133, 136)
BIBLE: Not an organization; as born-again Christians we are part of God's Church. (1 Cor. 12:12-14; Matt. 16:18; 18:19-20)
(TRUE CHURCH: click here for complete quotes and references.)
AUTHORITY - PRIESTHOOD
LDS: Believe only LDS have authority to baptize, ordain, etc. Have two-part system of priesthood—Melchizedek and Aaronic. (Doctrines of Salvation, Vol. 3, p. 80-81; D&C 107:1-21)
BIBLE: Christ brought end to Aaronic priesthood and is the only High Priest after the manner of Melchizedek. (Heb. 5:9-10; 7:11-17; 7:24-27; 2 Tim. 2:2)

Ok, I am not getting this. During the Millennium when satan is bound, there will be no death, no sadness, no illness, etc, Jesus will be in control of the world's government......peace on earth - so why are the lds going to be doing missionary work and temple rituals?

“so why are the lds going to be doing missionary work and temple rituals?”

There are just two things the cult of LSD (mormons) teach:

1. missionary work and temple rituals?
2. becoming a god and celestial breeding with a goddess

Since it’s on Earth, it’s #1

Even better..."The Prophet Joseph Smith taught that during the Millennium, “the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory”.

Poor mormons have to work even when they have reached "paradisiacal glory".....I'm wondering if the missions will last two years like they do now, or if they will have to spend the whole 1000 years knocking on the doors in Paradise??? Also since "The earth will be changed into a celestial kingdom." does that mean that everyone that is still there after the great war is automatically one of the chosen? Boggles the mind to think of the temples going full blast with proxy work during the milennium, doesn't it?

Because of the destruction of the wicked at the Savior’s Second Coming, only righteous people will live on the earth at the beginning of the Millennium. They will be those who have lived virtuous and honest lives.
...
People will still have their agency, and for a time many will be free to continue with their religions and ideas. Eventually everyone will confess that Jesus Christ is the Savior.

So, will any Mormon deny that this is teaching salvation by works? Can one escape judgement by being “virtuous and honest” whilst denying Christ, even when you see Him, in His glory, judging the world?

Besides which, how could other religions exist in the Kingdom of God? If you read scripture, it’s clear that only Christians can be alive during this time:

Revelaton 20:4-5
4And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
5But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.

Also, how could people “continue to have children as we do now”? That’s in direct contradiction with this:
Matthew 22:30
“For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.”

Are the mormons teaching that extramarital sex will be condoned in the Kingdom?

There is very little in the way of logic attached to mormonism. That’s one reason I left it.

I think I’ll take my chances on any and all of this. At least during this lifetime I can dis-observe the word of wisdom and stop wearing goofy underwear. In the big picture of things I am proud to finally be rid of the guilt that was put on me by the morg. The guilt trip is a control trip.

I’m over it. Also don’t have to properly pronounce paradisiacal.

“At least during this lifetime I can dis-observe the word of wisdom and stop wearing goofy underwear.”

Well, according to what this is saying, even if they are right, as long as you live a decent life, you’ll get to the Millenium, and then you’re guaranteed to eventually convert to the “true faith” anyways. So I guess, as long as you’re not a real bastard, there’s no point in worrying about it right now.

Yeah, I guess I kind of already knew that, but it seems everytime I peruse one of these threads, I continue to be amazed by the contradictions. I hope you’ve been able to find happiness outside of this group. Do you have family members that are still members, and if so, do they still associate with you?

Actually, the family members I had that were practicing mormons for the most part have passed on to some kingdom or other. My mother died two years ago and she was the last.

You have hit the nail on the head my friend. My energy goes out in a very different direction now that I am free. I feel sorry for the poor family members and friends that are still trapped in their guilt.

And yes, I might be a bastard but not a dumb bastard.

I was wondering about tithing during the milennium, since it looks like commerce continues as usual...

I found this at

Mormon Wiki

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints expect Zion to be established in Missouri, which will be called New Jerusalem during the Millennium. The United Order will be practiced in Zion and will be the economy of Christ everywhere on earth during the Millennium.

Today, the United Order experience remains in Mormon historical consciousness as a symbol of the more perfect society that Latter-day Saints believe will one day be achieved.

If the LDS church is so wrong, then what harm can they do by worrying about the souls of the dead? It sure beats you born agains protesting dead hero soldier’s funerals and claiming that the Jews deserved the holocaust.

Do you do that before or after one of your pastors threatens to burn Korans to get cheap national attention, or protests dead soldier's funerals, or gets a bunch of children killed at one of your compounds? 'My religon is better than yours is' sure is working out for you.

“If the LDS church is so wrong, then what harm can they do by worrying about the souls of the dead?”

Since it is too late for the souls of the dead, according to the Bible, I do not care what they do about the dead. I do care about the fact that mormonism PERVERTS the Gospel of Grace, makes an IDOL out of God, and inoculates people against the TRUTH - living people who will go to a Christ-less eternity without the Gospel of Grace.

“It sure beats you born agains protesting dead hero soldier’s funerals and claiming that the Jews deserved the holocaust.”

I think there are, let’s see, one church of 30 people who are whackos who do as you describe. The more than a BILLION Christians do not. As such, you are using a logical fallacy.

No one should use a soldier’s funeral to protest anything.
No one should not support Israel.
I condemn both, just as I condemn the perversion that is mormonism.

best,

It sure beats you born agains protesting dead hero soldier’s funerals and claiming that the Jews deserved the holocaust.

No born again Christian would ever do such a thing. If you are talking about the followers of Rev. Phelps ... they definitely do not represent born again Christianity they are a cult much like ... well, need I go there.

You don’t need to waste your time time with the 9 man. He appears to be an angry fellow/gal who really believes what he/she writes.

I’m sorry to hear about their passing. On the bright side, now you can pick your own path, and not have to worry about your choice putting a wedge between you and your kin.

“Under this plan, the head of each family would consecrate or deed all real and personal property to the Presiding Bishop of the Church and would receive, in turn, a stewardship, or “inheritance,” from consecrated property. Thereafter, Church members would consecrate annually all surplus production from their stewardships to the bishop’s storehouse.”

Well, I guess that solves the tithing problem. If you don’t own anything, then it’s pretty easy to give 10% of nothing, isn’t it?

“If the LDS church is so wrong, then what harm can they do by worrying about the souls of the dead?”

Well, they can do no harm (or benefit) to the dead, and no harm to the rest of us that I can see. They are only harming themselves. I hope you can forgive us if our concern for Mormon’s spiritual welfare is distressing to you.

“It sure beats you born agains protesting dead hero soldier’s funerals and claiming that the Jews deserved the holocaust.”

Oh come on now, “born agains” regard Westboro and their ilk much more unfavorably than Mormons. Don’t get me wrong, as a Christian, I love all of ya, but it’s the kind of love that means if you are acting spiritually like a “punk kid”, I would like to give you a spiritual spanking and not coddle you.

Hey, I’ll always take credit for making someone laugh, even if I didn’t intend to :)

“You must have this board confused with some other one my friend. This is the hatefully and angrily bash the Mormons at every possible turn with any means you can think of board.”

By “board” do you mean this thread? Or FR? Looking at your posting history, it seems you’re only here to post on LDS-related threads. There’s a lot more to FR than that, maybe you should poke your head out and join the wider community. We bash a lot more than Mormons, maybe you can even join in the fun!

Oh and btw, if you are interested, I posted a few questions earlier on the thread based on the material in the original post. If you think my reasoning is flawed, or criticism is unfair, maybe you can enlighten me as to where I’ve gone wrong and clear up the confusion?

I really don’t think it’s hateful or bashing, to compare a religion which wants to be accepted as Christian, to the standard of the Bible, to see if it is in agreement. I honestly would like to see if Mormons have some explanation for the discrepancies that seem apparent to me. I don’t single out the Mormons in this either, I have asked the same of Catholics, Charismatics, Preterists, Muslims, and assorted others when it appears to me their beliefs are unbiblical.

The guilt trip is a control trip.

AMEN!

I was LONG in coming to Christ, because I was NOT going to do it to miss out on the punishment due me as a sinner. I felt (knew!) that would NOT be the right reason.

It was later, that His LOVE for me broke down the barrier between us.

Some folks are reported to have asked JESUS, "What MUST we do, to do the works that GOD requires?"

And His answer was...

"Believe in the one he has sent."
