Pope Benedict XVI yesterday stopped to give a police dog an unexpected pat while thanking some of the 2,000 members of the West Midlands Police who had helped to protect him during his visit.

Wading through a crowd of public servants the Pope was greeted by the dog, who appeared to enjoy the attention....

Springador - Springer Spaniel Labrador mix? Sounds like a wonderful mix. What a great bird dog that’d be.

I seem to recall reading that the Holy Father is a very devoted dog lover and keeps several at the Vatican.

And the Guardian's headline reads:

Pope beats dog

. This is echoed by the NYT and WaPo and is carried by the International media for days. PETA comes out in opposition to the Vatican, sending nude over-the-hill celebrities to St Peter's square to protest. This causes wall-to-wall coverage on both CNN and Fox News for another few days. MSNBC decides, instead, to cover the latest female "ordination" and homosexual couple "married" by the Old Catholic Church and just happen to forget to mention that they haven't been in communion with Rome for 150 years.

Meanwhile, unreported in the news media, ELF is thwarted for bombing attempts at 20 Papal Nunciares around the world.

I seem to remember that he a cat person. Something about how he had to leave his cat at home, as they aren’t allowed at the Vatican.

This is not the pope’s first public encounter with a canine. He also likes St. Bernards:

Indeed, affection for St. Bernards seems to run in the Ratzinger family (this is the pope’s brother, Monsignor Georg Ratzinger):

I’m no dog expert, but for a family, they seem like the perfect breed.

Patient, strong, intelligent, loyal, friendly, even-tempered, good natured. But let a bad guy come near little Jackie, and they’ll tear his throat out.

Magnificent beasts.
