Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.(Romans 6;11-14)

We have seen that sin is a literal dominion, a dark authority that the unsaved live under, and for the most part, without even realizing it.The reign of sin and death is a reality. The unbeliever lives in the power of sin, and must sin. Everything he does, short of accepting Jesus, is sin.

But we have also seen that through our Union with Christ, we died to that authority, we are no longer under it. When Jesus died, we died and passed out from underneath the “reign of sin and death”, we were raised into the “reign of Life and righteousness” in Jesus Christ.

This is the reality of our “baptism into Christ”, it is an objective aspect of the work of Jesus on the cross, revealed to Paul by the Holy Spirit. Co-Death and resurrection In Christ are not experiences we must aspire to, pray for or seek. They are spoken of in the past tense, because they are the present spiritual reality of every believer.

The implications of this is far-reaching. No longer do we have to sin. It is still possible for christians to sin, but at least we now have a real choice not to.we don’t have to allow sin to reign in its former arena, our mortal body. We can truly present our member to the service of God, having been saved and delivered from sin’s dominion.

Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. (Romans 6:6)

The “old man”, who I was “In Adam”, lost, estranged from God and under sin’s reign, had total expression through my body. But now that man has died a death, and the “Body of sin” has been ‘unemployed’, disconnected from the old man who once animated it. This is what is meant by “the body of sin has been destroyed”, not annihilated, just disconnected.

The “new man”, that is who I am as a new creation in Jesus, justified , washed, redeemed, with new affections and holy desires, can now use that same body that once served sin, to serve God. My members are under new management. It is still possible for me to lapse back into the sinful patterns and habits I once practiced before Christ, but I don’t have to yield my members to sin. I have a choice.

The reason that sin shall not have dominion over us, is that we are no longer under law, but grace. This means that those under la, are also under the dominion of sin, because Law can only clarify sin, it gives no power over it. The “reign of sin and death”inaugurated by Adam’s sin, which Paul spoke of in Romans 5, cannot be overcome by law.

But under the reign of life, inaugurated by the obedience of Jesus, the “abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness” truly does deliver from sin’s power. Sin loses its absolute dominion over the man justified by Jesus, washed in the blood, and reconciled to God.

He may well lapse and have falls into his former sins, but he can never again be dominated by sin as he once was, “in Adam”. Christians do sin, but have achoice. Eternal life is the new principle of their life, it is the life that is opposed to sin, and they can no abide in sin as before.
