Mel Gibson May be an Alcoholic, a Sedevacantist and an Anti-Semite – But He Has My Sympathy
The Catholic Herald (UK) ^ | 10/25/10 | Stuart Reid

Hollywood has turned against him: he has been dropped from the cast of Hangover 2

Here we go again. Mel Gibson has been dropped from the cast of Hangover 2. He was to have had a cameo role as a tattooist – the role played in the original Hangover by that winsome rapist Mike Tyson – but at the weekend it emerged that his co-stars had decided that they could not appear alongside a man whose wickedness has dragged the good name of Hollywood through the mud. Over at Salon Matt Zoller Seitz thinks he detects double standards at play:

“There’s something about this Hangover 2 thing that doesn’t pass the smell test. It seems, at the very least, yet another example of the selective outrage that fuels controversy-driven entertainment coverage, and Hollywood posturing generally, with actors, directors, producers, studio bosses and other players working themselves into a righteous snit about certain people and offenses while giving others a pass.”

Go here for the whole thing.

The case against Mel is that he is anti-Semitic, homophobic, violent and alcoholic, and, to add insult to injury, a Roman Catholic. That’s a bad combination in Hollywood. Most Hollywood types can forgive alcoholism and a little domestic violence, but they draw the line at anti-Semitism and homophobia, and they don’t like Catholicism unless it comes from Bing Crosby and is wrapped in tinsel. No one would ever accuse Mel of wrapping his Catholicism in tinsel.

But hang on, is Mel Gibson really a Catholic? No, say his critics; he is a sedevacantist and therefore a schismatic and therefore not a Catholic. You didn’t hear much talk of that sort when The Passion of the Christ was released in 2004. Then it was Mel the conquering Catholic hero; now, in some quarters at least, it is Mel the Damned. When I last wrote about him three months ago, one reader declared in the combox: “I am sorry to say that Mel will go to Hell when he dies. He is NOT a Catholic and absolutely does not practice the true Catholic faith.” Bless that reader for having compassion enough to regret that Mel Gibson is doomed to spend an eternity in unspeakable misery.

But not even Google can tell us exactly what Mel’s religious position is. His friend the Jesuit scholar William Fulco says that Mel denies neither the Pope nor Vatican II. Mel Gibson is obviously a religious nut, however, and there must have been times when, as a loyal son, he embraced his father’s sedevacantism. It is possible that he remains a sede. But so far as I know he has never questioned, far less rejected, any part of Catholic teaching. That’s more than can be said for a lot of Catholics, including priests and bishops. Surveys show that most Catholics in the comfortable West do not accept the Church’s teaching on (for example) birth control. They don’t just ignore it – the way we all ignore moral teaching from time to time – they believe the Church is in error. So it could be that some of those accusing Gibson of sedecavantism may themselves be heretics, or at the very least recalcitrant dissidents. I am not defending sedevacantism – on the contrary – but I am suggesting that sedes are sometimes more faithful to Church teaching than respectable Catholics in the suburbs.

Whatever Mel’s status as a Catholic, however, he is in his anger and resentments a classic type of Catholic alcoholic. His anti-Semitism is very Catholic, too. Catholic anti-Semites are very rarely prejudiced against individual Jews, but have a “thing” about Jews collectively. G K Chesterton loved individual Jews, and was outspoken in his condemnation Hitler’s anti-Semitism, but he was able to write:

“I am fond of Jews
Jews are fond of money
Never mind of whose
I am fond of Jews
Oh, but when they lose
Damn it all, it’s funny.”

Some might say that those lines are quite innocent, but I am not sure many Jews would.

Mel himself obviously has nothing against Jewish people. His agent, Alan Nierob, is Jewish. Nierob is also the agent of Liam Neeson, who has been picked to replace Gibson in the cameo role in Hangover 2 – pending, as Nierob has said, “clearance of cast and crew background check”. Probably the only sane response to this is to laugh.

All the same, I have sympathies with Mel Gibson, if only because I, too, am an alcoholic, and sense that if I were to go back on the booze I might soon find myself doing Gibson turns. My perhaps rather pious hope is that Mel will sober up – whether or not he is drinking now, he is not sober – and make his peace with the Church. He can after all do that and continue to hear Mass in the old rite. First, though, he must learn moderation. That’s more than I have ever managed to do, but I am persuaded that the only antidote to booze, anger and bad religion is love of God and neighbour, especially when your neighbour is also your enemy.

People come in only TWO COLORS. They have either black/brown pigment, or yellow/brown pigment ~ and you can have both. But that's only two different pigments.

If you have yellow/brown you tend to be red haired with semi-bushy eyebrows, and translucent or freckled skin. You may have blue, green, or "hazel" (that's the other stuff) eyes.

There are maybe 200 million lucky people with the yellow/brown pigment. Another 6 billion are burdened with the black/brown stuff ~ poor dears!

Now, who are the mutants?

Let's leap ahead to other mutations ~ NON BI POLAR may be the mutation. Like NON AUTISTIC may be another one.

Color is readily overcome with the use of skin bleaches. There is no fix for bipolar disorder.

I am just AMAZED at all the ‘Mel’ hatred.

Yep, he’s goofed.. a LOT lately, it seems, but sheesh!

EVERY one of his ‘incidences’ have to do with his personal life. PERSONAL. It’s the media who splatters these things in our faces.

Why is it we give others who are just as ‘bad’-all the time, publicly, a pass.. simply because, “oh well, that’s JUST ‘them’ and we expect ‘them’ to be weird or whatever.

How come Sean Penn doesn’t get booted from acting jobs? Alec Baldwin?...I could go on and on.

Why hammer on Mel so badly? He’s his OWN worst enemy and will need to fix things himself. Professionally, he’s a fine actor.
How come Bill Clinton’s ‘character’ didn’t get HIM booted from his job?

For most people in this country a police officer who is Jewish is, to say the least, a type of person they've never encountered.

California has such folks though. One family we knew (they've since passed on) were part of an ancient caste/class who did trash work ~ and worked as police. They said they were sometimes mixed up with the Samaritans, but no, they'd been cops and trash collectors FOR CENTURIES. Their son was a CHIP.

I don't know if that reached back to Spain in the Middle Ages or Russia or Israel or Egypt or Babylon, but there they were and they knew something about it.

I may have met an FBI agent or Postal Inspector who was Jewish but it never occurred to me to ask ~ now accountants, or lawyers?

I doubt there were Jewish cops just laying in wait for Mel to wiggle waggle down the road, but if it was going to happen that'd probably have to be in Souvrn' California ~ but I doubt they'd have the time.

200 million "lucky" people? Are you stupid or are you fingers broken for your internet searches?

World population is 25% white, 60% asian, 13% black and a smattering of other types. Take your perceived aggrieved status and stuff it. Keep playing that race card, how's that working out for you?

There is no fix for bipolar disorder.

Start with Lithium.

>>There is no fix for bipolar disorder.<<

There’s a lot of money top be made treating it though. Get in line!

Lithium, per se, has several negative side effects. I've seen them at work but not with bipolar treatment. Friend of mine had epilepsy (resulted from removal of a tumor from his brain). Lithium compounds of all sorts are useful to a degree in treating anything having to do with certain brain processes.

So he was doing fine and one day showed up with immense red welts from his toes to his waist.

They didn't go away and got redder and weltier and more and more painful.

This is why the search continues for more powerful and less harmful drugs to treat epilepsy AND bipolar disorder.

You are abusively out of your nut today. Best take your medicine.

I thought there'd be someone out there who'd get sucked in easily ~ who doesn't know about the realities of human pigmentation.

Even blonds have the black/brown pigment ~ they have genes that suppress its production.

Red heads don't ~ they have an entirely different color pigment.

The world of human pigmentation has but two colors ~ black/brown and yellow/brown ~ that's it. All the rest of the stuff you see is just a matter of pigment density!

This guy probably should have actually watched the movie before commenting on it and making himself look foolish.

I agree. In the movie “the Hangover” Mike Tyson played.... Mike Tyson.

I don't recall him having anything to do with a tattooist.

This guy is dense.

That "Passion of the Christ" sure upset Hollywood, and it's historical box office success, insures that it will always be an unforgivable sin to them.

I don't side with Hollywood on anything.

If the “simplist explanation” is correct, your own take seems doubtful. A drunken Gibson is busted by a sherrif’s deputy named “James Mee?” Sounds less Jewish than Chinese to me.
Try this — a deputy gets Gibson dead to rights for DUI, but the dep. has been goaded by the anti-Gibson “antisemite” propaganda campaign Abe Foxman and his cronies whipped up to greet “The Passion of the Christ.” Well well... now he has a drunk Gibson neatly busted. Maybe couldn’t resist saying “So how’s it feel to get busted by a JEW, huh Adolph?” Then he can claim to be shocked at the response. That the officer was later investigated for leaking details on the case to the press supports this fairly obvious solution.

Well other than this is a pure invention of your imagination it has a lot going for it. Mel Gibson was the one who asked if the officer was Jewish, according to the report, the information was not offered up.

Moreover nothing the Officer said or did would excuse Mel Gibson's “Jews are responsible for starting all the wars in the world” lunacy.

Nothing.

Other than the fact that Gibson is a raving loon and raving loons say loony things when they rant and rave.

The offensive part of your post is equating discrimination against Bipolar disorder to racism. Newsflash: People are getting sick and disgusted with racism cards being thrown everywhere. You are responsible for your actions and no one else.

Uh, skin color like bipolar disorder is simply a genetically controlled condition.

I think you're getting your panties in a wad over what you imagine to be an intention behind my statement rather than what the statement said.

You do know about the part DNA plays, right?

When I say "DNA" that is not throwing the race card.

There is no race card to play anyway, and in reality there are people who don't care how you behave, if you have a genetic difference they are ready to jump on you.
