Mel Gibson May be an Alcoholic, a Sedevacantist and an Anti-Semite – But He Has My Sympathy
The Catholic Herald (UK) ^ | 10/25/10 | Stuart Reid

Hollywood has turned against him: he has been dropped from the cast of Hangover 2

Here we go again. Mel Gibson has been dropped from the cast of Hangover 2. He was to have had a cameo role as a tattooist – the role played in the original Hangover by that winsome rapist Mike Tyson – but at the weekend it emerged that his co-stars had decided that they could not appear alongside a man whose wickedness has dragged the good name of Hollywood through the mud. Over at Salon Matt Zoller Seitz thinks he detects double standards at play:

“There’s something about this Hangover 2 thing that doesn’t pass the smell test. It seems, at the very least, yet another example of the selective outrage that fuels controversy-driven entertainment coverage, and Hollywood posturing generally, with actors, directors, producers, studio bosses and other players working themselves into a righteous snit about certain people and offenses while giving others a pass.”

Go here for the whole thing.

The case against Mel is that he is anti-Semitic, homophobic, violent and alcoholic, and, to add insult to injury, a Roman Catholic. That’s a bad combination in Hollywood. Most Hollywood types can forgive alcoholism and a little domestic violence, but they draw the line at anti-Semitism and homophobia, and they don’t like Catholicism unless it comes from Bing Crosby and is wrapped in tinsel. No one would ever accuse Mel of wrapping his Catholicism in tinsel.

But hang on, is Mel Gibson really a Catholic? No, say his critics; he is a sedevacantist and therefore a schismatic and therefore not a Catholic. You didn’t hear much talk of that sort when The Passion of the Christ was released in 2004. Then it was Mel the conquering Catholic hero; now, in some quarters at least, it is Mel the Damned. When I last wrote about him three months ago, one reader declared in the combox: “I am sorry to say that Mel will go to Hell when he dies. He is NOT a Catholic and absolutely does not practice the true Catholic faith.” Bless that reader for having compassion enough to regret that Mel Gibson is doomed to spend an eternity in unspeakable misery.

But not even Google can tell us exactly what Mel’s religious position is. His friend the Jesuit scholar William Fulco says that Mel denies neither the Pope nor Vatican II. Mel Gibson is obviously a religious nut, however, and there must have been times when, as a loyal son, he embraced his father’s sedevacantism. It is possible that he remains a sede. But so far as I know he has never questioned, far less rejected, any part of Catholic teaching. That’s more than can be said for a lot of Catholics, including priests and bishops. Surveys show that most Catholics in the comfortable West do not accept the Church’s teaching on (for example) birth control. They don’t just ignore it – the way we all ignore moral teaching from time to time – they believe the Church is in error. So it could be that some of those accusing Gibson of sedecavantism may themselves be heretics, or at the very least recalcitrant dissidents. I am not defending sedevacantism – on the contrary – but I am suggesting that sedes are sometimes more faithful to Church teaching than respectable Catholics in the suburbs.

Whatever Mel’s status as a Catholic, however, he is in his anger and resentments a classic type of Catholic alcoholic. His anti-Semitism is very Catholic, too. Catholic anti-Semites are very rarely prejudiced against individual Jews, but have a “thing” about Jews collectively. G K Chesterton loved individual Jews, and was outspoken in his condemnation Hitler’s anti-Semitism, but he was able to write:

“I am fond of Jews
Jews are fond of money
Never mind of whose
I am fond of Jews
Oh, but when they lose
Damn it all, it’s funny.”

Some might say that those lines are quite innocent, but I am not sure many Jews would.

Mel himself obviously has nothing against Jewish people. His agent, Alan Nierob, is Jewish. Nierob is also the agent of Liam Neeson, who has been picked to replace Gibson in the cameo role in Hangover 2 – pending, as Nierob has said, “clearance of cast and crew background check”. Probably the only sane response to this is to laugh.

All the same, I have sympathies with Mel Gibson, if only because I, too, am an alcoholic, and sense that if I were to go back on the booze I might soon find myself doing Gibson turns. My perhaps rather pious hope is that Mel will sober up – whether or not he is drinking now, he is not sober – and make his peace with the Church. He can after all do that and continue to hear Mass in the old rite. First, though, he must learn moderation. That’s more than I have ever managed to do, but I am persuaded that the only antidote to booze, anger and bad religion is love of God and neighbour, especially when your neighbour is also your enemy.

Discrimination against people who suffer from bipolar disorder is pretty much akin to racial discrimination.

That's a race card.

if you have a genetic difference they are ready to jump on you.

There is that. And yes one of my brothers are bipolar so I am familiar with the disorder. Self-control of your actions is what my brothers and I keep trying to drill into him.

Having watched the condition in others over long periods of time I'm not at all sure self-control is possible.

Medicine is better.

Particularly if they can get enough relief early on so that they don't try ALCOHOL.

BTW, the “discrimination is akin” because there’s not a whole lot the person with the genetic condition can do about it ~ so it’s just as mindless as discrimination based on skin tones.

A bipolar Hollywood alcoholic that falls off the wagon one night (the worst drunk one can have) by drinking straight tequila, is under siege by Jews for his Christian movie, and is stopped by a hostile Jewish deputy (that released the tapes, and later sued LA county for anti-Jewish discrimination) in Malibu while sucking on a bottle of Tequila and driving 42 miles over the speed limit, and he blurts out some anti Jewish insults.

You must not have spent much time around bipolar people, or alcoholics, or both, in your time, that is pretty mild stuff, I would like to see what you say on a full fledged Tequila drunk.

You don't get OUT of an alcoholic something that wasn't already IN there.

The guy is a wack job with a Holocaust denying father who “never lied to (him)”, and with big wack job conspiracy theories involving Jews starting all wars floating about his Tequila soaked brain.

But it wasn't the Tequila that MADE those things be inside Mel, it just lubricated their release from the fetid depths of his deeply disturbed mind.

The only thing i would say is that he get away from religion, any religion, and get acquainted with Christ, however i have no reason to think i should give advice to some one else.

I am just AMAZED at all the ‘Mel’ hatred.

I look at it the same way,how many of the people doing all of the booing could come out any better than Gibson if they were in the spot light like he is.

It could just as easily have been John Wayne, but in his day people were not so paranoid about this politically correct crap.

I don,t know much about Mel Gibson, just seen a few movies, i did not watch the passion because i saw the previews and thought it was not scriptural, but i think he is a good actor and i trust some one who says what they think, even if it is just a rant, because i have that same problem, if it is a problem.

And like myself, i bet there are a lot of people out there who if they would think about it would thank god they are not in that spot light.

That is kind of like the old wood stove calling the teapot black.

Hollywood and the media despised John Wayne and was against him, Wayne had to fight them constantly to get his message out. Wayne was attacked on anything that they could attack him on.

Hollywood figures have, and do attack Christians in the same way and do fine, the people that hated him for making a pro-Christian movie used what they could to get him, even the meaningless ramblings of a bipolar alcoholic, falling off the wagon with a Tequila drunk.

Drunks often make statements they don’t believe, to upset people, you yourself believe a myth that they never lie when blind drunk and off their medication, just like people believed that children never lie as the left sent people to prison for that myth.

He agreed with his father's denial of the Holocaust when STONE COLD SOBER.

The guy is a raving loon and a racist.

I didn't say he wouldn't lie when drunk, or that drunks do not lie - I said you don't get OUT of a drunk something that wasn't IN there to begin with.

Holocaust denying Jew hatred is apparently something he ‘cut his teeth on’, and is ingrained deep within him, just waiting for some liquor to lower his natural inhibitions towards saying such hateful (and incorrect) things.

What race is Jewish, and after generations of Hollywood hatred of Christians and making entire movies to attack Christianity, doesn’t this sudden concern seem a little out of balance.

I don’t know what Mel’s quotes regarding the killing of Jews and Christians in camps during WWII are, but I know that I can fill a book with the most devastatingly harsh anti-Christian quotes from leading, respected, Hollywood figures, and like I said, putting that hatred into their movies to endure forever, and to be shown to the entire world, is common for that anti-Christian industry.

Hollywood as an anti-Christian propaganda mill, is unmatched in history, yet Gibson, who was a beloved figure until he made a Christian movie, has to be destroyed, there is a larger agenda here, that you seem to share with Hollywood as you defend efforts to take his career away.

The Jewish people are a Semitic race.

Sudden concern? I think raving loony Jewish conspiracy theorizing Holocaust denial has been an ONGOING concern.

So because of their “hatred”, Mel's hatred is to be excused? Moral equivalence? Really?

Larger agenda = conspiracy theory again? Yeah sure, because they hit him with their mind control ray and MADE him say that “all the wars in the world were started by Jews.”

Take his career away? Not in the slightest. I saw his latest movie, and will no doubt see his next one; and I think the cast of Hangover II are idiots for working with Tyson but having moral reservations in working with Mel Gibson.

But to deny that the guy is a whack job, racist, antisemitic conspiracy theorizing, Holocaust denying loon is to deny reality.

But the man sure knows story structure and pacing! :)

Sammy Davis Jr.?

Hollywood is a largely Jewish run, anti-Christian industry, that is on a crusade to destroy Christianity, yet here we are determined to stop one guy that has never done anything in his work that was anti-Jewish, but he did make a pro-Christian movie.

The scale is way out whack, and the left’s agenda is clear, and you seem to be sympathizing with him losing his job, he just lost his acting job on a movie because of a years old drunken rant.

And, despite your excuse making and conspiracy mongering on his behalf, he has nobody to blame for that drunken antisemitic conspiracy mongering rant but HIMSELF.

But by all means, invent a Jewish conspiracy to get Gibson to rant about a Jewish conspiracy! It is amusing.

Addicts tend to seriously wreck themselves and the ones who love them. Mel’s got a monster on his back. I hope his bottom has been reached so he can heal and make amends before he dies.

We also need to remember that God looks on the inside, he does not look at things like we do.

If some one is forgiven, does any one else know it except God?

Every true believer has a cross to bear, i may not understand yours and you may not understand mine but its there, some may seem very small and others may be so enormous that it is impossible for us to see the reason for it.

I believe there is so much more to this thing we call life that we would not be able to handle it if we knew it all, and that would be especially so for believers.

Well i don,t know but that is what i believe.

Gibson invoked a conspiracy when he ranted and raved that “Jews are responsible for starting all the wars in the world”, he also thinks the “fake” Holocaust was a big conspiracy.

You keep talking about a “larger agenda” and heaping doubt upon the idea that this Malibu cop was not part of something larger. Something larger would be a CONSPIRACY.

Gibson has nobody to blame for his antisemitism and holocaust denial but himself, for listening and taking to heart his nutcase loon of a father - who raised him up to be a nutcase loon antisemitic Holocaust denier.
