Local Lutherans quit denomination [5,800-member Upper Arlington Lutheran, OH]
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH ^ | November 19, 2010 | MEREDITH HEAGNEY

Posted on 11/19/2010 9:12:27 PM PST by rhema

An Upper Arlington-based church that was one of the 10 largest in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) officially has left the denomination after disagreements over homosexuality.

Most members of the 5,800-member Upper Arlington Lutheran Church, which has three campuses, were troubled by what they viewed as the liberal drift of the ELCA, the largest Lutheran denomination in the U.S.

On Oct. 31, members voted 558-28 to leave the ELCA. It was a second vote, as required; the first vote passed in June.

The ELCA angered some conservatives last year when it voted to allow people in same-sex relationships to serve as clergy members and professional lay workers. Before that, gay clergy and lay workers had to be celibate.

The church is now affiliated with two conservative denominations: Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ and the North American Lutheran Church. The latter was formed in Columbus in August.

The theological/political liberals who have infiltrated the old denominations don’t care that millions have left. Nearly empty buildings with a scatter of graying attendees is okay with them. They’re not into winning souls.

Stinks to be them when they stand in front of Jesus in the end.

Upper Arlington has a budget of more than $5 million. Until 2009, according to ELCA records, it was giving about $320,000 to "mission support" [the ELCA, presumably] .

It takes a very strange reading of the words of Scripture to think homosexuality is OK.

Leviticus 18:22 - "Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable."

Leviticus 20:13 - "If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads."

Romans 1:26-27 - "Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion."

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 - "Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God."

Congratulations. We had to leave ours when the vote failed. Good news is we started a new NALC with about 150 members. God is good!

you forgot Luke 17:34

"I say unto you, In that night there shall be two men on one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left."

The UCC has lost something like half of it’s members since it was formed in the late 50’s. Around 2 million people if i remember correctly. As a member of a UCC Church I have seen a decline over the years in new membership and attendance. Even 5 years ago dozens of kids were confirmed as members and several time a year 8-10 people joined. This year was a big year with a total of approx. 12 new members. We now have more people use the building during the week for community and church events than attend on Sunday.

In the end the leadership will always blame the mega-church’s or other denominations for taking the members and not the polices or climate they created.

“”I say unto you, In that night there shall be two men on one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left.” “

I’m guessing you are being sarcastic? Or are you unaware that entire families slept together in one big bed in that culture as well as in countless others, continuing to the present day?

Sleeping in the same bed does not mean you are having sex with everyone in it.

Typical libtard approach. When people vote with their feet, it is because the xyz denomination deceived them or flattered them or any other excuse except they abandoned the Gospel of Jesus Christ to embrace PC feel-good crap.

Actually, if one looks at the original Greek text, the word “men” does not appear in Luke 17:34. It merely says “two in one bed” and that is how the better translations leave it.

Your congregation extended exemplary hospitality to the Seven Marks Society and the LutheranCORE Theological Conference in August.

Thank you!

5,800 members?

Nevertheless, the ELCA will blow this one off, too. After all, there are still thousands of congregations that haven’t left.
