What idiots, our historical literature is loaded with discussions of encounters between men and other animals and dinosaurs, but for some reason they didn’t understand that the correct word was “dinosaur,” so they called the dragons and serpents.

Dinosaur: 1841, coined in Modern Latin by Sir Richard Owen, from comb. form of Gk. deinos “terrible” (see dire) + sauros “lizard,” of unknown origin. Figurative sense of “person or institution not adapting to change” is from 1952. Source: Online Etymological Dictionary
