That time of the year again to consider Chesterton's wise words.

You cannot chip away the statue of a mother from all round that of a newborn child. You cannot suspend the new-born child in mid-air; indeed you cannot really have a statue of a newborn child at all. Similarly, you cannot suspend the idea of a newborn child in the void or think of him without thinking of his mother. You cannot visit the child without visiting the mother, you cannot in common human life approach the child except through the mother. If we are to think of Christ in this aspect at all, the other idea follows I as it is followed in history. We must either leave Christ out of Christmas, or Christmas out of Christ, or we must admit, if only as we admit it in an old picture, that those holy heads are too near together for the haloes not to mingle and cross.

Powerful.

I think we all do. There is a remark on the Amazon website by a Fr. Bill that this book “The Everlasting Man” has brought many to conversions.

It is always good to read Mr. Chesterton’s work. Thank you, Salvation. GK always brings a smile to my face. And never fails to educate me more.

I may have to order for Amazon.

I was looking for Chesterton in our local Catholic Bookstore recently and they didn’t have any.

My Catholic Bookstore orders for me all the time.

Even other books — for example they got C. S. Lewis books for me. The Screwtape Letters, I believe it was.

Try the "regular" bookstores, too -- they usually have a religion section. And don't forget used bookstores -- I got about half my Chesterton books in a used bookstore, back in grad school days.

I’m reading The Screwtape Letters again for the 6th time.

It never gets old.

I looked for some Chesterton when I was out tonight. I only found Aquinas/Francis of Assissi and Orthodoxy, both of which I already have.

Try, “The Great Divorce.” Short, but very powerful.

Do you know Lewis's "space" trilogy? I think Perelandra is the only book I finished reading in one afternoon, turned it over and immediately read it a second time. And I must have read That Hideous Strength dozens of times! That N.I.C.E. is so "today" though the book was written in the 1940s.
