Russian Icon of the Mother of God of Fatima

A reader sent to me an interesting article about the development of an icon of the Mother of God of Fatima, which I thought I would pass on to NLM readers. One inspiration for this image is one of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. In order to accommodate the sensibilities of the Orthodox icon painter, Mary is shown pointing to the word 'Heart'. You can read more about it here.

What a symbol of peace and forgiveness! Out of Russia may come new religious inspiration.

"In order to accommodate the sensibilities of the Orthodox icon painter, Mary is shown pointing to the word 'Heart'"

With all due respect, no Orthodox Christian would mistake this painting for an Orthodox icon.

How about this one?

;-)

An icon for Mother Russia

The Virgin of Kazan is one of the most revered icons Russia ever knew. Its disappearance at the time of the Russian Revolution was a catastrophe, but its resurgence and its link with Pope John Paul II and Fatima has added a most recent chapter to one of the world’s greatest icons.

I very much enjoyed reading this post. I hadn't really realized or thought about it, that the Orthodox iconographer does not paint the heart (because he feels it too personal). I liked their "word around" in this regard.:) I love icons, this one is so beautiful, and I have added it to our Blessed Virgin Mary Slide Show. Thank you!
