Editor: While remaining ambivalent to the nature of the Church and the State, the Holy Father restates the importance of the State in maintaining the moral order. Religion may not be merely limited as the participant in culture.
Rom (kath.net/as) This Thursday morning Pope Benedict invited the new ambassador of the Republic of Austria to the Holy See, Alfons M. Kloss, for the handing over of qualifications, with which this extraordinary and appointed emissary was accredited.
In his address Benedict XVI. called Austria the "Land of Cathedrals", that in its culture, its history and not least in everyday life, the faith is deeply stamped and, while the same time it could demonstrate a long history of friendly coexistence between different religions and cultures.

Huh, go figure..it seems like all that illegals and welfare recipients think the church, any church that isn’t Muslim, is just a damned food pantry for their weekly raiding.
Can B16 let the Bishops in the US know this, and QUIT funding commie orgs like ACORN while they are at it...
I’m not remotely Roman Catholic, but this guy tells it how it is. I applaud him for slamming the social gospel fools.
Well said, Holy Father.
Dispenser of social services is hardly the entire mission of the ancient faith. The image of the Church standing solid and still, in the midst of various cultures and during the ebb and flow of societal change, in its doctrines, practices and piety is threading the needle, and I am very thankful there is an effort to do so.
Remember when even protestant churches were solidly against the pill and abortion, their own piety was obvious? One by one, over time, these have fallen in line with the world’s delight in contraception and business like meetings on Sunday. Yes, in the West, the Catholic Church is becoming weak and wobbly and due for criticism, but the Church Herself is not changed and shall not change, even if there is but a remnant left in her.
Thank you, Holy Father.
On the other ... obvious or not, it needed to be said. There seem to be many things that are obvious to sane Christians, but need to be said because the world is not populated primarily with sane Christians
As big a fan of JPII as I am, I don’t remember him making many speeches like this.
