B. B. Warfield (1851 1921) on why the gospel is necessary for Christians:
There is nothing in us or done by us, at any stage of our earthly development, because of which we are acceptable to God. We must always be accepted for Christs sake, or we cannot ever be accepted at all. This is not true of us only when we believe. It is just as true after we have believed. It will continue to be trust as long as we live. Our need of Christ does not cease with our believing; nor does the nature of our relation to Him or to God through Him ever alter, no matter what our attainments in Christian graces or our achievements in behavior may be. It is always on His blood and righteousness alone that we can rest.
But (and I only say this because I’ve been in churches who preached otherwise) once you are saved, you are always saved. Going back to get saved again means you were either lying the first time, or you’re lying this time.
Benjamin Breckinridge (B.B.) Warfield, the Lion of Princeton, was a stalwart of the Presbyterian faith. He is commonly referred to as the last great theologians of Princeton.
Together with A.A. Hodge he wrote an article on the inerrency of Scripture that sealed his place as a defender of the faith.
Machen described him as the greatest man he ever meet.
The Reformed faith puts Christ at the center. There is no moving on to the more important things. Christ is the most important thing.
We hold to perseverance of the Saints, but as sinners, we need to be constantly reminded of the source of our right standing. Without that constant reminder, our affections will wander.
And the congregation said, "Amen!"
If you can't appreciate the pure beauty of the violin after hearing this, something's wrong with your ears.Yeah, which is it?
Great way to put it. I'll have to remember that.
If you can't appreciate the pure beauty of the violin after hearing this, something's wrong with your ears.But it is not just salvation... it is reaffermation of hope, renewal in love, the realization anew what Jesus has done for you. Sometimes we just need a refresher. To hear the gospel after salvation is the same as reading scripture a second time, a third time... etc. It is still the same good news, but it changes YOU each time you hear it.
Amen. According to Luke 17:10 If there ever were a day in our lives that we EVER did everything as we ought, or refrained from doing EVERYTHING we oughtn’t (which I doubt) we should STILL consider ourselves unprofitable servants.
Luk 17:10 So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.
Tit 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
Tit 3:6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
Tit 3:7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
Any idea where in Warfield’s corpus that’s from?
Sorry, no. I haven’t read nearly enough Warfield.
Amen!
The Gospel message still thrills, no matter how many times I hear it.
Amen!
The Lion of Princeton nails it again.
Soli Deo Gloria!
Thx for the ping.
Good points.
True.
