Who will pray for Christopher Hitchens?
WorldNetDaily.com ^ | October 6, 2007 | Ellen Makkai

With Christopher Hitchens teetering on the brink of eternity, revisit this query from 2007:

Do we have any prayer volunteers for Christopher Hitchens? He’s the self -proclaimed “atheist/anti-theist,” and stunningly clever wordsmith. He leapfrogged puzzled agnosticism to a pledged rebellion against God.

He’ll be a tough turn-around, so thick is his iron-clad ignorance of the divine.

In a recent Newsweek he cynically dissects Mother Teresa’s dark theological struggles, a postscript to his derisive 1995 book, “The Missionary Position: Mother Teresa in Theory and Practice.” A week ago he was a featured speaker for an Atheist Alliance conference in Washington DC.

Hitchens’ latest book, “God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything,” maligns the devoted, be their god Creator or counterfeit. “Holy books,” including the Bible, are “mythological morality tales” and he suggests any religious training is child-abuse.

Nope.

Even if you prayed 24hrs a day/7days a week there is no way to individually pray for every person in the world. When I pray, I pray for those that are suffering who actually love God and don’t spit in His face.

If praying for a sick child, sick mother, or sick friend who loves God (instead of this ass) makes me a “bad Christian” then so be it.

Atheism and Theism (Christianity) are equally unprovable...or that’s how it seems to this agnostic.

It all depends on what you mean by the word "prove".

I just prayed for God to open CH’s heart before it’s too late.

I’ll admit it was hard - I’ve heard him speak sarcastically against religion and debate Christianity many times.

I think the ones its hardest to pray for are the ones that need it the most. I also think they are the ones that do ourselves the most good.

His fate is in his own hands. He is capable of prayer, and if he feels authentic contrition, he can face his forgiving Maker with confidence. He is really not unique; there are millions like him.

I am reminded of the story of a priest ministering to a notoriously sinful and dying man.
“Are sorry for your sins?” asked the priest.
“No, actually I enjoyed them.”
“Can you at least tell me that you are sorry that you are not sorry?”

I will... I heard that most if not all of his kids are religious. It must hurt them that he isn't at this point. When he was semi-well he said not to believe it if you hear he had a “ death bed conversion”, but that's probably exactly what will happen with his family around him when the time comes.

Well, he got his title half right. ;)

People like this have usually been hurt by the Church or Christians. There are so many people out there like that.

Reminds me of the story of the young single mom and her baby sitting on the sidewalk in front of the church on sunday morning. She held her head down, crying.

"My dear, why are you sobbing?" a voice from the sky suddenly appeared

The girl looked up "I tried to go to church this morning but the people inside scorned me and demanded that I leave as I did not deserve to be there." she replied.

The voice laughed, "my dear, do not let that make you sad. I've been trying to get into that church myself for many years now and they still refuse to let me in as well."

Too bad, though I understand. That was my attitude decades ago before He tapped me on the shoulder and introduced Himself. I was stunned, then humbled by my ignorance. It became a rip-roaring adventure after that.

I am a lay Dominican. One reason is that Dominic pled with tears for sinners. Moses pled for sinners. Jesus lived and died and lives for sinners. I already intercede for atheists, though no where near as much as I should.

It doesn’t have to be one or the other. Just pray for him, I wouldn’t wish his fate without Jesus on anyone. Jesus died for Christopher too and if not for the grace of God we would all be headed for hell.

It's not me, or you... It's YHWH. One cannot claim there is no proof. It is there. There is no way that one can say otherwise with prophecy proving foreknowledge spanning aeons.

That’s a tough one.

This is why I try not to get too upset when people malign God. He can handle them just fine and in His own time without my help.

Just ask Madeline Murray O’Hare.

The unsaved can be prayed for as a whole, Jesus knows how to read hearts when prayers are uttered and groaned. We, as Christians, sell Jesus short when we forget to add the ones who need a doctor.

Yes. A self=proclaiming "Christian" who does harm to others in the name of God and causes loss of credibility toward Christ... I would prefer to be an Atheist facing judgement than one who has caused many to leave Christ.
