Gosh, I miss Thin Mints. I won’t even eat them when a co-worker leaves a box out, because I refuse to reciprocate. Somewhere I’ve got a recipe for imitation, but I know they won’t be the same.

One of my nephews is in Royal Rangers and his sister is in (I think it’s called) King’s Daughters. I don’t know if that’s just their church or if they’re part of a larger organization.

I give the cookie-dealers a couple of bucks for the local troop, and tell the adult chaperone that I can’t buy the cookies because of my issues with national leadership.

Why do we allow the continued existence of Planned Parenthood?

There are enough sane people in this country to make it go away, and I don’t mean by waiting for congress to act.

I told them why I refused to buy their cookies this year (and will do so every year).

The girls I kinda felt sorry for because I don’t think they really understood. The parents/leaders who stood by and heard what I said just glared at me.

Mine won’t be joining. My older girl is nearing teen years, and the twins are too young. This, on top of the leftward drift of scouting in this area. And since some of us are celiacs, we cannot buy the cookies anyway. So for us, it’s not an issue. But I do worry about it on others’ behalf.

Good for the Bishop. He should also have mentioned that the GS leadership promotes homosexuality and early sexual activity, as well as abortion, and all manner of leftist ideology. No doubt some local chapters or groups may be okay, but the national leadership and the materials they send out are most definitely not okay, and I've heard so many accounts on FR over the years of terrible things happening in GS. Lesbians are allowed to be GS leaders. 'Nuff said.

Silverleaf, you and your family have had highly positive experiences with the Girl Scouts, and to that extent they have legitimately earned your approval and loyalty.

You may have heard the saying, "When the classroom door is closed, the curriculum IS tehe teacher." The same adage could apply to the Girl Scout troop: "When the door is closed, the agenda IS the troop leader."

While local troops can be blameless and even highly valuable, the GSUSA leadership has a pattern of funneling objectionable content to young girls through local troops.

Consider the GSUSA Journeys program material, which is REQUIRED for girls to receive the highest GSUSA awards: The Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards.(The page numbers are so you can reference the material on your own.)

BLISS page 25 and MEdia page 71 -girls are referred to a pro-abortion women's media website:

http://www.WomensMediaCenter.com >

This site also features live links to over 2 dozen pro-abortion websites, including Planned Parenthood, NARAL/Pro-Choice America, and The Abortion Access Project. http://womensmediacenter.com/index.php/about-wmc/partners.html>

AMUSE pages 50-51, material for 4th-5th grade Girl Scouts - GSUSA highlights the play, Simply Maria, which ridicules

Girltopia page 10 - Sheri S. Tepper's “The Gate to Women’s Country” is given as an a example of a utopia. Sheri Tepper has served as the Executive Director of Rocky Mountain Planned Parenthood for 25+ years. In “The Gate to Women’s Country,” Tepper touts a feminist utopia through a future-fantasy of a benign feminist leaders who remove negative traits from their society through forced sterilization.

AMUSE page 24 – GSUSA promotes the dance group Urban Bush Women. See the review including comments from the choreographer about the group's recent production of Zollar: Uncensored. "The choreographer said the presentation will be a collection of segments ... all of them exploring themes of eroticism and sensuality.“ http://www.niaonline.com/ggmsblog/?p=3187

MEdia page 25 – GSUSA refers girls to www.MediaMatters.org. In February 2011, Media Matters Action along with 26 other pro-choice organizations wrote a letter to Congress to defend Planned Parenthood. The letter states, “We are writing to inform you that our organizations stand united in opposition to any effort to defund Planned Parenthood.”

AGENT OF CHANGE page 27 - Girls are introduced to Marjane Satrapi, Iranian, pro-abortion and gay advocate..”

And then there’s the eye-poppin open campaigning for “sexual and reproductive rights” from the “young women from more than 20 countries” who attended their recent gathering:

http://www.wagggsworld.org/en/CSW54/Day6>

Might you object that that’s only the World Association (WAGGGS)? Every member of GSUSA is automatically a member of WAGGGS and supports them in name and financially. The $12 annual membership fee girls pay to GSUSA triggers a quota that is paid by GSUSA to WAGGGS.

Mission Sisterhood page 53 – GSUSA promotes WAGGGS and encourages girls to visit www.wagggs.org/en/world.

If I were local troop leader organizing all the wholesome and creative “girls’ leadership”” activities so valuable to our young women, I would dissasffiliate with the GS and reoraganize into some other group not compromised by “the thing that used to be Girl Scouts.”

Typo: "Simply Maria" ridicules purity, marriage, and having babies.

I also wanted to add that the merit badge I referred to earlier is not called "Sexuality," it's called "Becoming a Teen." It's a Junior Badge, meant for girls around 5th grade. And the discussions can absolutely take any direction permitted by the leader. One (this was online) commented:

"I have had other "planned" days (always having parents sign permission slips)...BUT - as they have gotten older we have also had some pretty graphic unplanned discussions...I had talked to an expert at our council about sensitive issues and she felt that it was ok (and expected) that discussions with teenagers would turn that way and unless it was a planned event not to obsess over permission slips."

How terribly hard it is to raise daughters (or sons) with a strong moral core rooted in the goodness of marriage and sexual love. And heaven help me, I'm speaking from experience.

Pay attention, GS troops are local to the community, run by volunteers who are your neighbors, and reflect the values we leaders grew up with and try to pass along-

Thank you for that clarification, spoken from experience. G.S. is local and is every bit as good (or bad) as the local leader(s) I, as a guardian, am very aware of what goes on at my G.S.'s meetings. Tomorrow morning she is going on a camping, horse back riding trip that she has been looking forward to all year long, she'll be gone for two over nights and you can bet your bottom dollar that I know every adult that is going on that trip.

Thanks for your participation, the G.S., like most such organizations, is only as good as its local leaders.

Royal Rangers is an Assemblies of God alternative to Boy Scouts. They had mixed success, depending on the experience of the leaders at each church.

I was raised AoG and I went to both Boy Scouts (for a short time) and RR. The RR leaders weren’t very good, but the Boy Scouts leaders were just as bad.

The good thing about RR was that they had it on Wednesday night, so I didn’t have to sit and listen to a preacher who liked the sound of his voice for two hours.

Everything useful I learned about the outdoors I learned from my dad, the Army and experience.

Ah the dreaded “Becoming a Teenager” badge

My 5th graders did it and loved it, one girl got her teenage cousin to come to a meeting and talk.

Here are the requirements for the now-discontinued badge, as Juniors they pick 6 topics to complete the badge
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Becoming A Teenager
Complete any six of the following requirements to earn this badge:

Get the Facts
Ask a health educator, doctor, nurse, or teacher to visit a Girl Scout meeting to talk about how the body changes in puberty. Before the visit, create a list of at least 10 questions on the physical, mental, and emotional changes both girls and boys your age can expect over the next three to five years.

Successful Teens
find out about girls in their teens who have achieved success through an invention, a business, service to others, sports, the arts, or in another way. Why were they successful?

Read About It
Read or listen to a book that has a teenage girl as the main character. Organize a book swap with your troop or with friends. Have each girl describe a book she has read, then swap her book for another so that each girl gets a new one to read.

Looking Ahead
Find out what's on the minds of teenage girls. Ask teenage sisters, cousins, and neighbors what their greatest challenges are. Check out the questions teenage girls ask on the “Ask Dr. M” section of the Girl Scout Web site www.girlscouts.org/girls and read the advice Dr. M offers. What other suggestions would you make?

Here's Looking at You!
Set up a personal care schedule and follow it. Include combing, brushing, washing, and taken care of your hair; bathing, brushing your teeth, washing your face, and having regular health check-ups.

Freedom and Responsibility
Your teen years will bring a lot more freedom and responsibility. Find out from two or three teens how they handle having more freedom, more responsibility, and more decisions to make.

Today's “Tween”
Look through magazines, read books, or watch television programs and movies that feature girls and boys 9-12 years old. Notice their clothing, behavior, talk, and activities. With your troop, friends, or family, talk about what you see. Are these messages accurate?

Teen in the Family
Interview family members about what it was like for them when they were teens. You can talk about appearance, school, friends, dating, or any other information that is important to you.

Celebrate!
In many cultures girls take part of coming-of-age ceremonies that mark their entrance into adulthood. The Japanese celebrate Seijin no hi Day on the second Monday in January after a girl turns 20 years old. Many Jewish girls have a Bat Mitzvah when they turn 13, and many Hispanic girls celebrate their 15th. birthday, which in Spanish is called quinceanero. With a group of friends, and some adult assistance, plan and conduct your own coming-of-age ceremony.

Teen Habits
Look through magazines or watch some television programs that show teenagers. Make a list of the characteristics and behaviors of teenagers as shown in articles, advertisements, or shows. Ask a teenager if your list is realistic
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

AS for discussions “taking any direction permitted by the leader”, yes, with a bunch of girls of any age, that happens. Ever stay up late and listen in on a PJ party of mid schoolers or teenagers or girls at any overnight event after the lights are out?

That's why parents must choose their daughter's leader, or become one themselves, as my mother did and now I have.

Again, use please use facts in your arguments about the immorality of the GS organization.

Does an online comment about one experience based on a supposed comment from one Council rep, represent an entire organization of 3.5 million girls ?(USA strength, 10 million worldwide)

I don't try or pretend to offer my teenage Scouts sex education, but I do offer many activities in a controlled environment where increasingly they make the choices, and peers whose parents trust me and the group and all share similar goals for their girls

Thanks!

Yes, I think regardless of the direction National and International groups and influences try to take Girl and Boy Scouts, those of us who are grassroots are not going to simply go along, nor will we abandon “OUR” organization.

We hold on one community, one troop at a time, preserve and pass along the best of traditions, and ignore the rest.

Well I would not let my daughter join and called the school and told them why.I had a meeting with her and my son who were a year apart and we decided to form our own group. We had 14 members and would go on trips once a month and meet once a week. There is no way I would support a group that has pro-aborts attached to it’s name.

Since you seem to support this program, could I also ask if you support abortion?

It would seem that you might.

What about contraception?

What about embryonic stem cell research that kills the embryo of a possible baby?

What about euthanasia — We will all get older and older — even the GS.

What about same-sex couples?

I’m with fatima on this.....I would never allow my girls to be exposed to these falacies which the Catholic Church has condemned.

Those are good points, and I'm attentive to your good experience.

I would be interested in knowing why, in general, leftists take over the top. I'm not just talking about GS here. I'm talking about just about any church, school, labor, business, or professional organization you can name.

It reminds me of what Our Lord said about "the children of this world are, in their generation, wiser than the children of light" (Luke 16:1-8). But it's little consolation.
