MILWAUKEE, (AP) -- Methodist pastors who have increasingly defied a church ban on marrying gays were dealt a setback Wednesday when a colleague was found guilty in a church trial of marrying a lesbian couple in 2009.

A 13-person jury of clergy peers unanimously convicted The Rev. Amy DeLong of Osceola. The jury found the 44-year-old not guilty of a second charge of being a "self-avowed practicing homosexual." That vote was 12-1.

After the verdicts were announced Wednesday afternoon, church officials began hearing a second round of testimony to help jurors recommend a penalty that could range from suspension to defrocking. At least five DeLong supporters were scheduled to testify.

Was the entire panel blind? Not guilty??? Really??? My now-deceased aunt & uncle were Methodist to the core but I suspect this sort of thing is why there was nothing in their will(s) for the church. As their executor, I was very surprised at that fact.

The chances of reversing the rule are far from certain, however. Rule changes must be approved by delegates at the church’s General Conference, held every four years. Because a growing number of delegates come from Africa, the Philippines and other theologically conservative regions, voting patterns reflect strong resistance to change.

There is hope, most people don’t know that the Methodists are officially agin it.

Note the 12-1 vote. Wonder which way it was?

How does she time find to marry lesbians while hosting shows on both Food Network and NBC?

Probably about as much as same-sex "marriage" I'll wager?

Nothing against Guy...I like Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. I just laughed when I saw...um, her, because that’s who she reminded me of. They always try to look like men.

I’m surprised that you weren’t immediately reminded of the big blonde gal who is on food network. This thing in WI looks more like her than Guy. But the Food Network gal is most likely a much nicer human being.

Well, I pretty sure she’s got itching ears. Whether you can make a silk purse out of them, I don’t know.

“began hearing a second round of testimony to help jurors recommend a penalty that could range from suspension to defrocking. “

If I recall correctly that region of the united methodists just set the penalties for performing a same sex union to “a 24 hour suspension” meaning she’ll get tuesday off.

Well then, they’ve accomplished the first role of the church, haven’t they? :)
