We ask all who read these words to keep the parish family of St. Andrew, Los Angeles, CA in their prayers during these difficult days. In the early morning hours of 15 August, an intruder broke into the parish Church and desecrated the Holy Altar, Tabernacle, Iconography and the entire altar and sacristy area. The most devastating aspect of this horrendous crime was the scattering of the Reserve Sacrament on the floor among and beneath the various altar crosses, candles and vestments strewn throughout the church. The Holy Altar itself was pulled from its foundation and dragged through the Royal Doors into the nave of the church. It was a senseless act of destruction and obvious anger that left the Church and the neighboring community in much distress.
Father Vasyl Shtelen and members of the parish were able, following the completion of the police investigation and the insurance examination, to gather the scattered religious vessels and items, clean them and bless them through special prayers and sprinkling with Holy Water in time for the celebration of Divine Liturgy on the Great Holy Day of the Transfiguration of our Lord. We pray that Father Vasyl and the members of his flock were able to experience the Glory and presence of our Lord on this Feast, saying, as did the Apostle Peter - Lord, it is good for us to be here in spite of the obvious hurt and sorrow they have experienced.
We assure Father Vasyl and all St. Andrew Parish members of our continued prayers. Insurance coverage will most likely cover most of the expenses to repair or replace many of the damaged vessels, vestments and other items, there will most certainly be additional expenses.
Here's something happier: the Ukrainian Easter Egg, in Vegreville, Alberta, the world's largest Easter egg:
I've seen it, after I heard a conference presentation about it at the 1976 National Computer Conference in NYC.
Video Surveilance is going to be a growing industry
Does anyone know of a good company I can buy stock in?
Ubiquiti Networks (UBNT) when it goes public.
Cameras are good but they only help if the thugs are caught and prosecuted. The current DOJ would probably applaud the desecration.
Satan has been busily working on someone, I see. Every blessing to this church and its religious as well as its parishioners. They must be a real threat to badness if the Evil One has to pull this kind of thing.
Both Catholic and Orthodox churches put the feast of the Transfiguration on August 6, but some of the Orthodox churches, including the Ukrainian Orthodox, still use the Julian calendar, so August 6 falls on August 19 in the Gregorian calendar.
Ab hoste maligno defende me.
In this case Ab hoste maligno defende ... Christians.
[From the Latin prayer “Anima Christi.”]
If it is any comfort to you, the demon inspired vandals only tend to break into churches that threaten the devil.
When I lived in a small coal town back east, a nearby city had six Catholic churches and many wealthy Protestant churches, but the vandals only desecrated the local (Russian) Orthodox church (which had a dynamic prayer group) and the local Wesleyan church that had a small school.
The Wesleyan church must have been a real threat, since the feds threatened to sue them unless they made the school “handicap friendly” (which could have bankrupted the low school budget) but luckily since they didn’t accept federal funding, they were exempt from the law. Wonder who went to all that trouble to harass the church?
A sad day—one that shows how secular and sinful our state has become. Things will change in the future—mark my words. Someday soon the churches will be packed with worshipers. We will need those churches when things look blackest and America’s back is too the wall and the wolf of Communist/Socialist world is at our throats. I will be America against almost the whole world—maybe Japan will stick with us, England and Israel but all the others will join the “winning side”— even Mexico and Europe. I hope my vision is wrong.
The Anima Christi is a prayer from around the 14th century.
It is still widely used after receiving the Body and Blood of Our Lord,
Jesus Christ in Holy Communion.
|Soul of Christ, sanctify me
Body of Christ, save me
Blood of Christ, inebriate me
Water from Christ's side, wash me
Passion of Christ, strengthen me
O good Jesus, hear me
Within Thy wounds hide me
Suffer me not to be separated from Thee
From the malicious enemy defend me
In the hour of my death call me
And bid me come unto Thee
That I may praise Thee with Thy saints
and with Thy angels
Forever and ever
- Saint John Vianney.
Churches need to put in CCTV...Then they can identify and prosecute.
