Greek, not Roman. The Romans — Rome was then in its infancy as a world power — are briefly mentioned in 2 Macc (IIRC) as allies of the Jews.
Judaea was then part of the Seleucid Empire which had a Greek-speaking elite, not necessarily of Greek ancestry; the Seleucids were of Macedonian origin, descended from one of Alexander’s generals.
I thought of that after I posted but then I figured, this is an Eszterhas movie. The audience knows about Romans, not Selucids. It will be Romans.

It’s a great story - we read the books every couple of years - but I just can’t take a Gibson Gore-fest. I’d rather Cecil B. DeMille had done it.
