Church leadership post for an openly gay Mormon

(CNN) - Early on in life, Mitch Mayne knew exactly who he was.

He would race home...to watch reruns of “Star Trek” and swoon over his crush, Captain Kirk. At 8, after his parents converted, he was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints...

It is where he feels spiritually at home, irrespective of the fact that, for the past 10 years, he’s been openly gay.

“I’m a man that lives in two worlds that a lot of people don’t think intersect,” Mayne said...

Actively Mormon and openly gay: It's the sort of combo that might leave people wondering...

...In mid-August he was...called (as Mormons say) by local church officials to serve in an LDS Church leadership position in San Francisco.

Mayne’s appointment may have generated attention, but he’s not the first gay Mormon to assume a leadership role in the church.

In Seattle, Washington, and Oakland, California, gay men have reportedly served in LDS Church leadership roles, Peggy Fletcher Stack wrote in her piece about Mayne in The Salt Lake Tribune. What makes Mayne unique, Stack said, is that he "may be the first local LDS leader to announce his orientation over the pulpit.”

Late last month, from the pulpit, Mayne revealed - to anyone who didn't already know - who he is:

"I am a gay Latter-day Saint.

"I don't want tolerance. If I am tolerated, I am disliked in some way...

"I don't want acceptance. To accept me is to graciously grant me the favor of your company. To accept me is to marginalize me with the assumption that I am less than you..."

SNIP

...Mayne, who was in a longtime monogamous relationship until a year ago, was only able to get his church calling because he’s not currently with someone.

From the article: ...Mayne, who was in a longtime monogamous relationship until a year ago, was only able to get his church calling because he’s not currently with someone.

Well, this tells me that if he steps down -- and then takes up another man -- then when that relationship ends the Mormon church can come "calling" again for him. Yo-Yo callings in the Mormon church, eh?

Ah, more liberal conveniences involving the Mormon church:

* Homosexual rights: Mormon church supports Salt Lake City's protections for gay rights and Mormons Back Salt Lake City Gay Rights Laws

Illegal alien liberal policy nuances... note these headlines & stories: Considering The Disconnect Between Some LDS Church Members and Leadership on Immigration

Abortion: The official Mormon church position (see
http://www.religioustolerance.org/lds_abor.htm) is that it's "OK" for an abortion if...
(a) Incest needs to be covered up;
(b) The baby is disabled and needs to be destroyed accordingly
(c) Mom's "health" (whatever that means...distinct from saying "life" of the mother)
(d) If the abortionist says it's "OK"
(e) If the Mormon god says it's "OK" in prayer...

E alone above could "justify" abortion to individual Mormons as long it overrides the person's conscience!

And if you need further evidence of just how liberal the Mormon church leadership can be when it wants to be, then look at how Harry Reid was welcomed with such warm open arms by an all BYU student & faculty occasion for Reid to speak there: Reid gets warm reception at BYU

Why not a leadership position for a sexual deviant in a religion founded by a sexual deviant? What does what the Bile says on the matter mean to a Mormon after all? Nothing and less than nothing, obviously.

Nothing would surprise me about the Mormon cult. Even the Boy Scouts have more moral compasses than these cult followers. Pathetic!

. . .Mayne, who was in a longtime monogamous relationship until a year ago, was only able to get his church calling because he’s not currently with someone.

So he got the leadership post because he is, at least currently, celibate. And the leadership post consists mainly of setting appointments and paperwork. This proves Mormons still hate gays because it was not a sufficiently important leadership post. And because he had to quit his relationship in order to get it.

Further, the church university is turning liberal not only because they let Harry Reid speak there, but because Obama actually managed to get close to 19% of the vote in the county in which it is located in 2008. But since John Kerry got 26% in 2004, this also proves Mormons are racist. < /sarcasm >

Wrong on both counts. Stake secretary IS a huge post (and important).

Secondly, the relationship ended, he didn’t quit the relationship to get the position.

This shows what I have said for quite awhile, the LDS will so go the way of the ELCA and Episcopalians.

No, he's just not in a declared, committed relationship. I wouldn't lay money on the celibacy claim.

Homosexual Mormon? :? Does this mean he believes in the next life he will be the god of his own planet and experience endless anal sex with a lot of males? And how exactly will his planet be populated if there’s no women on it?

Wow. Pretty sad. I grew up knowing Mormons as highly moral, if theologically challenged, people.

I am disheartened greatly by the demise of their moral bearings.

The Catholic Church doesn't teach any of those errors (your reference is to Post #1.)

I suppose you could say you inadvertently omitted the word "Not"?

I hope you don't expect serious falsehoods to stand unchallenged?

The RLDS -- headed by Joseph Smith's several generations of offspring -- have already embraced social liberalism to a degree...they've added "sexual orientation" to their non-discrimination list (whatever that means)...and celibacy is a non-issue for RLDS (Community of Christ) members.

The LDS will indeed keep moving toward the RLDS.

Such is the case for those religious bodies that give lip service to the Bible.
