No Same-Sex Weddings at West Point's Catholic Chapel, Says Military Archdiocese

(CNSNews.com) – Will same-sex marriage ceremonies be allowed at the Catholic Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point?

“The answer is ‘no,’” said Taylor Henry, director of public affairs and media relations for the Catholic Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, and spokesman for Archbishop Timothy Broglio, who certifies all Catholic chaplains for the armed services.

“Holy Trinity is an actual Catholic parish, unlike the non-denominational chapels that are found on other military installations, and the only services held there are Catholic services. The Catholic Church does not perform the sacrament of matrimony for same-sex couples,” he said.

What about other Catholic chapels on other military bases?

“What non-Catholic chaplains do in nondenominational chapels on U.S. military grounds around the world will be up to the military, but no Catholic chaplain is authorized to perform a same-sex marriage under any circumstances,” Henry added.

Archbishop Broglio, meanwhile, has denounced directives issued last week by Under Secretary of Defense Clifford Stanley and DoD General Counsel Jeh Johnson clearing military chaplains to perform same-sex weddings in military chapels.

“The Pentagon's new policy, as outlined in these two memos, appears to ignore the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which was signed into law 15 years ago and remains in effect,” Broglio said in a statement released last week.

Of course there will be gay weddings, but after lawsuits, or just the threat of them, there will be no weddings, or all comers will have to be acommodated.

Is West Point a military installation? I don’t think so.

But if it is... then Catholic Chapel or not... If the Military says “You will bless the union of two pipe smoking fags”, then guess what???

That church will do it or be out on their keisters...

I’ve been predicting for some time now - and I see it coming to a head soon - Military Chaplains will be FORCED to accept and adhere to queers in the military and SHUT UP about their Biblical convictions or face a Court Martial.

I agree with the archbishop to the extent that that building continues to be used as a chapel. If it is owned by the military, then it could always be redisignated. That would be a sinister, in-your-face act by the government, so it’s not likely to happen.

No there won’t. The Church has withstood this type of intimidation for over 2000 years and will close and deconsecrate the church, essentially abandon it, before joining two sodomites in holy matrimony.

I wished my multi-language/cultural mass, homo-loving, Bush-hating parish had this approach..

Yes, it is an Army post like any other.

“Holy Trinity is an actual Catholic parish, unlike the non-denominational chapels that are found on other military installations, and the only services held there are Catholic services. The Catholic Church does not perform a pretend version of the sacrament of matrimony for same-sex couples,” he said.

Fixed.

Thanks for the update.

So. Who will cave first? The Catholic Church or the US Armed Forces?

What I mean is that with the repeal of DADT, the Church will find itself at odds (understatement!) with military policy.

Not that's funny right there, I don't care who you are.

Can we use the so called “Separation of church and state” to prevent the governemnt from forcing churches to do things against their idealogy.

If the government forces churches to preform gay weddings can they force mosques to perform gay weddings too?

I think this may be the next step—require all chaplains to perform same-sex “marriages” or resign from the military. I don’t know if they would go as far as court-martials: that might provoke public outrage. Probably this is for after the 2012 election.

No, Catholic Chaplains will not marry same-sex couples, come hell or high water. It'll never happen.

The military may have to discharge, or even court-martial all the Catholic chaplains. But the chaplains would not commit a canonical sacrilege: not one.

I met the Archbishop of the Military, Archbishop Broglio, this last weekend at a Serra Club Conference.

**“What non-Catholic chaplains do in nondenominational chapels on U.S. military grounds around the world will be up to the military, but no Catholic chaplain is authorized to perform a same-sex marriage under any circumstances,” Henry added.**

This is exactly what he and all the other Catholic Chaplains said.

God bless the Catholic Church! Will it be the only one standing against this?
