Episcopal Parish in Bladensburg Converts to Roman Catholic Church
The Washington Post ^ | 10/9/11 | J. Freedom du Lac and Michelle Boorstein

Posted on 10/10/2011 10:01:41 AM PDT by marshmallow

The Rev. Mark Lewis awoke early on the last morning of his life as an Anglican priest and dressed in a suit and tie instead of his usual priestly regalia. That’s different, he thought, for the first of many times on a day when so much was different for St. Luke’s, the small Episcopal church in Maryland where Lewis had been rector since 2006.

On Sunday — with Lewis wearing lay clothing and sitting with St. Luke’s parishioners inside the Crypt Church at Washington’s Basilica of the National Shine of the Immaculate Conception — most of the parish from Bladensburg converted to Catholicism.

In doing so, St. Luke’s became the first Episcopal church in the United States to convert under new Vatican rules meant to attract disaffected Protestants.

“This truly is a historic moment,” said Cardinal Donald W. Wuerl, the archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, who led Sunday’s conversion Mass, which he called “a joyful moment of completion.”

Fifty-eight of St. Luke’s roughly 100 parishioners were confirmed at the applause-filled Mass, during which they were anointed by Wuerl — one by one, old and young, white and black.

Osita Okafor, a 56-year-old Nigerian immigrant, found himself first in line before Wuerl for the rite of reception. His reaction? “Oh, my God, I must be blessed.”

Like many members of St. Luke’s, Okafor is an immigrant from Africa — in his case, Nigeria. Many others are from the Caribbean.

With Africans and folks from the Caribbean making up much of the crowd it sounds like it's a rejection of the Gayward Drift!

Eventually the Episcopals will go the way of the Shakers ~ a bunch of old people, no heirs, no new blood ~ and then poof! They're gone.

Many have gone to the Roman Catholic Churches to Worship Mary. I suppose they will begin praying to her (instead of God) and saying the Rosary soon.

The Episcopal Church around here is the most liberal of all churches. The Pastor even flies the gay pride flag under the U.S. flag.

If you knew anything about the rosary, which you obviously don’t, you would realize that the rosary commemorates Christ’s life, death and resurrection.

If ignorance is bliss, you must be one of the happiest people at FR.

Actually sir, the Episcopal church has their own version of the Rosary from what I am told. Had they been praying it I honestly believe they would not be in the mess they are in now!! I guess they did not get Our Lady of Fatima’s message!! As did you, nor will you ever for that matter. Pity.

No Catholic worships Mary.

Ha, I've seen the cathedrals to Mary in Italy. She is described in Roman Catholic Literature as a Co-Matrix and Co-Redemptrix. And you expect her to hear your prayers (something only God can do). You believe all grace comes from her, ignoring the passages where the Scripture says that Grace and Truth came by the Lord Jesus Christ alone.

Her statues are worshiped with people bowing down to them.

I'm not fooled.

“I’m not fooled. “

Catholics believe Mary is the Mother of God, Jesus, the second person of the Trinity. Jesus said ‘Behold thy Mother’. Catholics regard Mary just as Jesus did. Jesus was not fooled.

If an angel came to give another Gospel I would not listen to it. The Lord Jesus Christ alone is the Good News, that He came, died upon the cross for the sins of folks like you and I, and then was Raised from the Dead securing the Resurrection of Believers in Him alone.

Pity those who "will die in their sins" because they will not believe that "I am He" just as He said. Pity those who take on false gospels and idols. Who are distracted by people or imagined people, in this a false Mary.

For what did Mary say? She said "My Soul Rejoices in God My Savior". Acknowledging her sinful nature and need for the Savior which she bore.

It was she who said "Whatever He says, do it" regarding the Lord Jesus Christ. Pointing to him as Lord and No One Else.

She awaits with all the rest of the Dead in Christ, the Resurrection and Marriage supper of the Lamb. And she will give Him all the Glory for the good works He did through her, casting down her crown before His feet.

Jesus said ‘Behold thy Mother’

He said this to the Apostle John, so he would fulfill his duty to his mother according to the Law.

Taking Scripture out of context is a sign of a cult.

The co- Matrix(?) and co-redemptrix are NOT official policies of the Roman Catholic Church, but are being pushed by a small special interest group. This is sort of like stating that “dominionism” is the official policy of ALL protestant denominations instead of being an idea of a small group of protestants.

Right. Now you are on the right track. Keep thinking Mary was the Mother of God.

Mary is not the Mother of God the Father, Mary is not the Mother of the Holy Spirit. She was the physical Mother of the Lord Jesus Christ.

What you are trying to do is to put her in authority over God saying she is the "Mother of God". No God, the three persons in on is Sovereign over the whole universe and is sovereign over Salvation.

I am convinced she would not like this title, and instead gave herself the title "Handmaiden of the Lord" in Luke 1:38. And to submit herself totally before God instead of trying to run things saying "be it unto me according to thy word".

What is going on is that a False Mary is being promoted with attributes that only God could have "Hearing Prayers, Giving Grace, Healing, redeeming from sins, and being a co-redemptrix". And she is worshiped (under the rubrix of veneration) into something that she is not.

The Catholic act of worship is the Mass. Search all the prayers of the Mass, even those of Marian feasts, and you will not find one addressed to Mary. They are all addressed to the God the Father in union with the Son and the Holy Spirit. Catholics do not worship Mary. Learn a little about the subject before you expose any ignorance by speaking of what you know not.

And you expect her to hear your prayers (something only God can do).

Please cite where in the Bible it says that the saints cannot hear our prayers.

Thanks TC. You would think about years of this I would get used to it, but no. It does get old and on my nerves however. I have not the heart to tell them I am a convert to this faith. I will sit by the door next Sunday and every Sunday as long as Obozo is in office. It looks like we will be greeting more run-offs or converts from the Episcopal church. What can one say? Other than “Welcome home”.

"Do you speak Spanish? Would you like to join the choir? It's never too early to volunteer for the Festival Committee!"

I know several people in Real Life and a few on FR who are convert from the Episcopal Church. It must be very hard having the church which your family may have attended for generations flaking out beneath your feet, as it were.

Co-Matrix(sic) and Co-Redemptrix.

Co-Redemptrix is a Latin term meaning the woman with the Redeemer not the woman who is equal to the Redeemer.

I'm not fooled.

You've contradicted that assertion several times on this thread alone.

Mary is not the Mother of God the Father, Mary is not the Mother of the Holy Spirit. She was the physical Mother of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Better brush up on your Scripture reading, kid.

"And she cried out with a loud voice, and said: Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy." Luke 1:42-44

"Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed." Luke 1:48

"And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we saw His glory, the glory as it were of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth." John 1:14

"Philip saith to Him: Lord, shew us the Father, and it is enough for us. Jesus saith to him: Have I been so long a time with you; and have you not known Me? Philip, he that seeth Me seeth the Father also. How sayest thou, Shew us the Father? Do you not believe, that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you, I speak not of Myself. But the Father who abideth in Me, He doth the works. Believe you not that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me?" John 14:8-11

"And account the longsuffering of our Lord, salvation; as also our most dear brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, hath written to you: As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are certain things hard to be understood, which the unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, to their own destruction." 2 Peter 3:15-16

.Let’s get that one world religion rollin’

Nah, not many are going to join the Church of Iscool, the one World religion. Instead we Christians (Catholics, Orthodox, Lutherans, Pentecostals, Baptists, Anglicans, Methodists, Presbyterians etc.) are happy with our faith in Our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ

Your cult can go on to believe whatever it wants to believe.

She was the physical Mother of the Lord Jesus Christ.

And the Lord Jesus Christ was/is God. hence Mary is the mother of God, Jesus Christ. She is of course not the mother of the Father or the Holy Spirit, but she is the mother of God the Son. The three -- Father, Son and Holy Spirit are co-eternal and of one being and are God and were the ones who created Mary. Mary gave birth to God the Son, Mary was the mother of God the Son.

Just as your mother did not create you by giving birth to you, similarly Mary of course was not the creator, she was in fact created by her Son, Jesus Christ, Lord, GOD and Savior.

If you deny that Mary was the Mother of God the Son, then you are denying Jesus' divinity

Mary can only hear prayers through the Grace of God. She may only dispense the Grace that comes FROM God. She does not redeem you from sin. None of what you say is even our beliefs — stop saying “you believe in this, I say so, now explain to me why.” despite so many telling you that we do not believe what you are saying we do

You didn't get that from scripture...Obviously your religion made that up and now you state it as fact, with not an iota of evidence...

She may only dispense the Grace that comes FROM God.

Do you guys go into a trance when you get baptized into your religion??? Perhaps you all have been hypnotized...Mary doesn't dispense any grace from anyone...Why do you spew this stuff???

She does not redeem you from sin.

But yet you call her your co-redeemer...Your co-mediator...

The Shakers were (are, I suppose - there are a handful practicing, or were fairly recently) a non-Catholic, non-Orthodox, some would say non-Christian, monastic religious order. Among other features, the members practiced celibacy.

In a time of great economic and social turmoil, their stable lives and economic security made them favored caretakers for orphaned or abandoned children, many of whom remained with them in adulthood. Their techological and commercial innovations make their foundations comparable in their effects to the great Benedictine houses of Europe, although over a shorter time span.

What a bunch of words. The Lord Jesus Christ is Divine because he was the Son of God from the Foundation of the world. Do you not remember His words "Before Abraham was I AM". It is not Mary that makes the Lord Jesus Christ Divine but being God himself.

You didn't get that from scripture

What, the idea that the saints in heaven hear our prayers, or the idea that the saints in heaven hear our prayers through the power of God?

The idea that the saints in heaven hear our prayers and intercede for us is clear from 2 Maccabees 15:14 (not our fault that that book was taken away from your Bible) and many other passages, including:

Matt 17:1-3 Jesus converses with Moses and Elijah at the Transfiguration

Matt 26:53 Jesus says he can call on 12 legions of angels. If he can, so can we. Additionally, he says in Matt 22:30 that the saints in heaven are like angels. Therefore, we can call on them, too.

Rev 5:8 The prayers of the faithful on earth are presented to God by the angels and saints in heaven

Rev 8:3-4 The prayers of the faithful are presented to God by an angel

There many other examples. Also, it only stands to reason that, if we pray for each other on earth because we love each other, when we are in heaven where our love is perfected by God, we will then pray for each other, not less, but perfectly.

As for Mary hearing prayers through God's grace and power, not her own, why should Cronos need Scripture to prove that God is in control and everything happens through Him? Don't you believe that as well?

But yet you call her your co-redeemer...Your co-mediator...

The title is "Mediatrix of all Grace," not "co-mediator".

All grace comes through Mary because all grace comes through the Incarnation of Jesus Christ, which came through Mary. Seems rather obvious.

"Co-Redemptrix" ("co" is a Latin prefix meaning "with," not "equal to") merely means that Mary coöperated in the Redemption in a unique way, mirroring Eve's coöperation in the Fall. That's obvious from Scripture; the rest of us don't have angels appearing to us announcing that we are to become the mother of the Messiah.

Neither of those two titles are taught as dogmatic truth by the Church.

It is not Mary that makes the Lord Jesus Christ Divine but being God himself.

Nobody said otherwise, so you're shooting at strawmen. (Not to mention that the idea of a created being "making" someone "divine" is ridiculous. You can't give what you don't have.)

But if we refuse to call Mary "Mother of God" (the original Greek title was "Theotokos," literally, "God-bearer"), then we are necessarily doing one of three things. Either we are making Jesus less than God, or we are making him something other than one person, or we are making him something other than God incarnate, born of Mary.

Making Jesus less than God is the heresy of Arianism. That's what the Nicene Council shot down in AD 325.

Making Jesus something other than one person is the heresy of Nestorianism, shot down by the Council of Ephesus in AD 431.

Making Jesus something other than God incarnate can be any of a number of heresies, all of which we definitively shot down by the Council of Chalcedon in AD 451.

Making Jesus something other than a person born of Mary is too contrary to Scripture to be bandied about anywhere except by FR anti-Catholics. And yes, there used to be a couple of them on here that agreed that Mary was only Jesus' surrogate rent-a-womb mother, and had no real relationship to him. Seriously.

By the way, all of the Reformers stood with us on this, as will any Protestant minister with an orthodox Christology and a knowledge of Church history.

"Mother of God"

Calling Mary, the Mother of God put her over God. And God bows the knee to no one. Therefore the statement is Blasphemous.

Hola! Lamento escuchar que la iglesia fue tomada por la enfermedad de homosexuales montado sucio. Bienvenidos a nuestra iglesia. Es bueno que tiene.

Me sing? Yea a lo so! So lo you can’t here it!!

Would you believe TC and Chode that I was baptized an Episcopal? My real mom and dad attended that church! Sometime after my real mom died my dad left, too many sad (happy but sad) memories. Dad went to the baptist church after that. So for the next how many years till I was 18 I was raised baptist? I was about three or four but I still remember that church. I was told it was going liberal back then but no where nears what it is today. My real mother was very conservative as is my father. I am sure my real mother must be turning over in her grave over this. My real mother loved going to church, and loved God. I am almost sure my mother would be happy with my decision to become Catholic.

Calling Mary, the Mother of God puts her over God.

It's a statement about that's more about the PERSONHOOD of Jesus Christ than Mary herself, that there are not two persons in Jesus, but only one, with two natures, human and divine.

Also, do you deny that Jesus was subject to Mary and Joseph?

"He went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them." -Luke 2: 51

Also, Scripture warns against heresies that make Jesus Christ less than what He is.

By this is the spirit of God known. Every spirit which confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is of God: And every spirit that dissolveth Jesus, is not of God: and this is Antichrist, of whom you have heard that he cometh, and he is now already in the world. -1 John 4: 2-3

And God bows the knee to no one.

Not only does that go against Luke 2: 51, which I cited above, it goes against one of this famous Scripture passage.

For let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men, and in habit found as a man. He humbled himself, becoming obedient unto death, even to the death of the cross. Philippians 2: 5-8

“you believe in this, I say so, now explain to me why.”

Cronos I have been told that since I became a Catholic!! Will someone please tell me why? You said it too! That is the best way it has ever been put. When I attended the Baptist church no one ever said that to me! No one ever attacked me when I was at the Baptist Church. True I was forced to go there by my parents and had no desire to be there, but this is beside the point. If someone asked where I went to church back then no one said “you believe in this, I say so, now explain to me why.” So what changed now?

When I was at the Baptist church they said you would be attacked for your Christian beliefs. They said this almost every Sunday and never knew what they meant until the day I was Baptized and confirmed a Catholic! (actually it began before then but...) The attacks have been non stop and from people I would not have thought. From other Christians!

For the record everyone, I had friends back when who were non Christians. They were a bit alarmed that I wanted to join the Catholic church as well. The only question they asked me however was “are you doing this on your own freewill?” and “is anyone forcing you?” When they realized it was my own decision they were cool with that. I never heard from them “you believe in this, I say so, now explain to me why.” I only hear this from other so called Christians.

Why is this?

Not bad Spanish ;-).

My mother is facing similar difficulties with the Presbyterian Church - USA. 20 years ago, one could pretty much count on an old-fashioned worship service and plenty of community-service opportunities, but now more and more everything seems to be, “We have to make homosexuals happy, no matter what!”
