How do Mormons answer ‘not Christian’ claims?
Washington Post ^ | October 12, 2011 | Michael Otterson

Posted on 10/16/2011 1:13:19 PM PDT by greyfoxx39

I had been a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter -day Saints for just a few days when I encountered my first experience of anti-Mormon prejudice.

-SNIP-

“But you’re not Christian and you don’t believe in forgiveness.” It was not a question, but a declaration, delivered with a finality reminiscent of a judge’s gavel rendering verdict on a hapless miscreant.

-SNIP-

Mormons do not pretend that their understanding of Christ is identical to that of Christian orthodoxy. We embrace the New Testament and much of what the modern Christian world teaches about the Savior of the world, but we do not stop there. We have a lot more to add about the Son of God, and it is that additional revelation that causes the real rub with some orthodox Christians. To us, however, refusing to accept further enlightenment on the mission of Jesus Christ is like a math teacher telling his or her students they must stop at multiplication tables. No algebra or calculus allowed.

-SNIP-

For those who want to accelerate that process of understanding, our churches are open to all every Sunday. Use the website to find the nearest chapel to you, and feel free to drop by. If you try to track the number of references to Jesus Christ in the service, you may lose count. So just observe the families, listen to the prayers, leaf through the hymn book to see if any of the hymns seem familiar, and make up your own mind as to how Christian our people are. Jesus taught us: “By their fruits, ye shall know them.”

Leaf through the hymn book to see if any of the hymns seem familiar

Many of the hymns in the Mormon hymnal are undoubtedly familiar to Protestants and Catholics. However, I have about a dozen hymnals from various Protestant denominations in my book collection, and the Mormon hymn Praise to the Man does not appear in any of them. It's safe to say that one will also not find it in any Catholic hymnals. Listen to the hymn and read the lyrics to understand why.

The recognition that protestantism is the necessary predicate for the LDS, and that in fact LDS theology is not contradicted by protestant metaphysics is what made me a Catholic.

If universal apostasy were possible (if it did not contrasdict Christ’s promise), what’s the difference between 1500 years and 1800 years?

I don’t think he was saying it was. I think he is Catholic jabbing at Protestants.

Anyhow, I will take one exception with your own statement that we, LDS "cannot be like others."

Jeff, there are former mormons who are evidently older than you who have sat in mormon pews for YEARS hearing that mormons "cannot be like others." The universal theme was that all Christianity was/is a product of Catholicism, and the Catholic faith was/is an abomination and mormonism the ONLY faith that did not spring from those roots.

All the PR campaigns now ongoing cannot erase the century and one half of mormons denying Christianity just because modern mormonism is attempting to co-opt the Christian label.

You guys are just going to have too wait for our generation to completely die out in order to get away with the "we are just like you" lie.

Correctamundo on all counts.

Until the day Romney is nominated, all opposition will be portrayed as ugly religious bigotry in the MSM.

The day after he is nominated, the MSM will whip out the magic spectacles, Reformed Egyptian, bloody Temple rituals, child brides, all of it. After 9 weeks of 24/7 Mormonism 101, Mitt won’t be able to be elected dogcatcher.

Jeff:
I appreciate your writings but, the salient point here is we are doctrinally different.

That’s a fact which in undebatable and there should be no shame or condemnation for our respective positions.

Without the restoration of the CoCLDS there is no LDS. Therefore it is necessary for LDS to condemn all others as apostate or worshipping dark religions.

BTW, You take exception where one didn’t and doesn’t exist. Why?

Has there been a reconcilliation of the trinity and the Godhead of the tri-theistic? Not that I am aware of.

Has there been a reconcilliation of the PoGP between traditional Christians (One of the 3 great parables found in Mathew 13) and that of the stand alone book of PoGP of LDS? Not that I am aware of.

Has there been a reconcilliation of God being Alpha, Omega and existing from everlasting to everlasting and that of LDS doctrine which says God was once man and as such man too may one day become a god? Not that I am aware of.

Has there been a reconcilliation of “Baptism for the Dead”? Not that I am aware of.

Has there been a reconcilliation of the “White God”. Uhm no.

Has there been a reconcilliation of the Mark and seed of Cain for those peoples of color? No, in fact, I was astonished to hear a friend describe, proudly, another person who is Mormon as a Laminite. I actually had to look that up and didn’t find it tasteful.

Has there been a reconcilliation of just who exactly will be sitting on the right hand of God and what documents we must present in order to gain entry in Heaven or in the case of LDS Celestial, Terrestrial (I forgot the other) Kingdom? Can’t think of it.

Finally, and really I could list more, the following Christian denominations have made studies of Mormon teaching and come to the conclusion that there are irreconcilable differences between LDS doctrine and Christian beliefs based on the Bible.

Statement of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod
Statement of the Presbyterian Church (USA)
Statement of the Roman Catholic Church
Statement of the Southern Baptist Convention
Statement of the Assemblies of God Church

So where in my previous post do find a personal offense which was never given.

Each of us, if our faith in our Faith is strong enough, should find ourselves able to endure.

It ain’t personal and I won’t make it so. You should have taken as such either.

This is all so patently obvious that it's mind-boggling that Romney and his supporters can't see it!!!

These statements and more demonstrate the seperateness of Christianity and Mormonism.

The only reason they say "We are Christian" is an attempt to morph into something they are not and co-opt Christianity.

"What is it that inspires professors of Christianity generally with a hope of salvation? It is that smooth, sophisticated influence of the devil, by which he deceives the whole world"
- Prophet Joseph Smith, Jr., Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 270

"...all the priests who adhere to the sectarian religions of the day with all their followers, without one exception, receive their portion with the devil and his angels."
- Prophet Joseph Smith, Jr. , The Elders Journal, v. 1, no. 4, p. 60

"With a regard to true theology, a more ignorant people never lived than the present so-called Christian world."
- Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, v. 8, p.

"Christians—those poor, miserable priests brother Brigham was speaking about—some of them are the biggest whoremasters there are on the earth, and at the same time preaching righteousness to the children of men. The poor devils, they could not get up here and preach an oral discourse, to save themselves from hell; they are preaching their fathers' sermons —preaching sermons that were written a hundred years before they were born. ...You may get a Methodist priest to pour water on you, or sprinkle it on you, and baptize you face foremost, or lay you down the other way, and whatever mode you please, and you will be damned with your priest.
- Apostle Heber C. Kimball, Journal of Discourses, v. 5, p. 89

"What! Are Christians ignorant? Yes, as ignorant of the things of God as the brute beast."
- Prophet John Taylor, Journal of Discourses, v. 13, p. 225

"Both Catholics and Protestants are nothing less than the ‘whore of Babylon' whom the Lord denounces by the mouth of John the Revelator as having corrupted all the earth by their fornications and wickedness. Any person who shall be so corrupt as to receive a holy ordinance of the Gospel from the ministers of any of these apostate churches will be sent down to hell with them, unless they repent."
- Apostle Orson Pratt, The Seer, p. 255

"After the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized, there were only two churches upon the earth. They were known respectively as the Church of the Lamb of God and Babylon. The various organizations which are called churches throughout Christendom, though differing in their creeds and organizations, have one common origin. They all belong to Babylon."
- Apostle George Q. Cannon, Gospel Truth, p. 324

Believers in the doctrines of modern Christendom will reap damnation to their souls.”
- Apostle Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, see pp. 45-46

"I was answered that I must join none of them (Christian Churches), for they were all wrong...that all their creeds were an abomination in His sight" (Joseph Smith History 1:19).

"...orthodox Christian views of God are Pagan rather than Christian." (Mormon Doctrine of Deity by B.H. Roberts, p.116)

"...the God whom the 'Christians' worship is a being of their own creation..." (Apostle Charles W. Penrose, JD 23:243)

"The Christian world, so called, are heathens as to their knowledge of the salvation of God." (Brigham Young, JD 8:171)

"What! Are Christians ignorant? Yes, as ignorant of the things of God as the brute best." (John Taylor, JD 13:225)

"What does the Christian world know about God? Nothing...Why so far as the things of God are concerned, they are the veriest fools; they know neither God nor the things of God." (John Taylor, JI) 13:225)

"Believers in the doctrines of modern Christendom will reap damnation to their souls (Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p.177)

"...brother Joseph B. Nobles once told a Methodist priest, after hearing him describe his god, that the god they worshiped was the "Mormon's" Devil-a being without a body, whereas our God has a body, parts and passions." (Brigham Young, JD 5:331)

"...the great apostate church as the anti-christ...This great antichrist...is the church of the devil." (Apostle Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine p.40)

"Both Catholics and Protestants are nothing less than the "whore of Babylon" whom the lord denounces by the mouth of John the Revelator as having corrupted all the earth by their fornications and wickedness." (Pratt, The Seer, p.255)

“God is not at its head, making that church [i.e., Christianity] – following the appearance in it of Satan – no longer the church of God. To say that Satan sits in the place of God in Christianity after the time of the apostles is not to say that all that is in it is Satanic.”
- Kent P. Jackson, “Early Signs of Apostasy,” Ensign, December 1984, p. 9

1 Nephi 14:10 "Behold there are save two churches only; the one is the church of the Lamb of god, and the other is the church of the devil; wherefore, whoso belongeth not to the church of the Lamb of God belongeth to that great church, which is the mother of abominations; and she is the whore of all the earth."

"Orthodox Christian views of God are pagan rather than Christian" (Mormon Doctrine of Deity, B. H. Roberts [General Authority], 116).

Brigham Young: “…and he that confesseth not that Jesus has come in the flesh and sent Joseph Smith with the fullness of the Gospel to this generation, is not of God, but is Antichrist.” (Journal of Discourses, Vol 9 pg 312).

Mormon Apostle Hyrum M. Smith,- “In fact, my brethren and sisters, if the falsity of a religion can be measured in any degree by the amount of trouble and turmoil and strife and bitterness and hatred that it has engendered in the hearts of men, if it can be judged by the number of wars it has carried on and the rivers of blood it has shed, the amount of misery and sorrow, it has caused, or the extremes of impurity, found among its adherents, then Christianity, that which is known as Christianity, is the falsest of all religions in the world… The trouble is, as God declared to Joseph the Prophet, mankind have gone astray. Their religions are an abomination in his sight, and their professors are corrupt because they have turned away from the truth and have turned unto fables.” (Conference Report, October 1916, p.43).

The plaque above is found in Temple Square with Joseph Smith a top it.

Do the Latter Day Saints corporately and collectively believe this and support that view point?  Of course they do.  Otherwise, if there is no resurrected church then there is no LDS.

But everyone outside their group is "Anti-Mormon"?  LOL  They are Anti-Christian and seek not only to undermine Christianity and their beliefs but outright work to subordinate one man to another, in that one must accept the Prophets words as sacrosanct and inviolable.

No man pays fealty to another as their superior because thier so called god ordains it.

Many of the hymns in the Mormon hymnal are undoubtedly familiar to Protestants and Catholics.
________________________________________________

If they are somerwehat familiar to Christians they will not however be exactly the same...

The mormons change the words to fit their own religious beliefs and the meaning of the song becomes something else other than Christian...

For instance that great Hymn that is Christian when sang with the right words Holy, Holy Holy is sang as a Mormon song by exchanging “God in Three Persons Holy Trinity” with something else less obviously Christian and Biblical..

Mormons do not believe that the LORD Jesus Christ is God and they do not believe in the Trinity...

A perusal at the words of other “hymns” that they sing shows the same deleting of anything Biblical...

Some people on Free Republic obsess about Mormons.

Tell that to the 52,000 mormon missionaries going out every day telling Christians their faith is bogus...and Flooding the Earth with the Book of Mormon-Ezra Taft Benson

"The Book of Mormon is the instrument that God designed to “sweep the earth as with a flood, to gather out [His] elect.” (Moses 7:62.) This sacred volume of scripture needs to become more central in our preaching, our teaching, and our missionary work.

Now THAT'S obsession!

This was very true for many years...lately though, I've seen reports that Jesus has been invited to the sessions more often. Especially if he shaves his beard and puts on a white shirt and tie.

Just to make my position clear about the POLITCAL significance of all this, if it were possible for Jeff Head to be installed as President tomorrow, or in January 2013, or after Marine expeditionary forces retake the capital, or at any other time, I’d be for it.

I’d even provide the white horse.

My opposition to Romney is entirely nonsectarian.

You're darn tootin'!

I listened to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's version of "Holy, Holy, Holy!", and sure enough, "God in three persons, blessed trinity" was replaced by "God in his glory, blessed deity."
