Precious Promises of the Book of Mormon
Ensign ^ | October 2011 | Thomas S. Monson

Posted on 10/27/2011 7:27:20 AM PDT by Saundra Duffy

Many years ago I stood at the bedside of a young father as he hovered between life and death. His distraught wife and their two children stood nearby. He took my hand in his and, with a pleading look, said, “Bishop, I know I am about to die. Tell me what happens to my spirit when I do.”

I offered a silent prayer for heavenly guidance and noticed on his bedside table a copy of the triple combination. I reached for the book and fanned the pages. Suddenly I discovered that I had, with no effort on my part, stopped at the 40th chapter of Alma in the Book of Mormon. I read these words to him:

“Behold, it has been made known unto me by an angel, that the spirits of all men, as soon as they are departed from this mortal body, … are taken home to that God who gave them life.

“And … the spirits of those who are righteous are received into a state of happiness, which is called paradise, a state of rest, a state of peace, where they shall rest from all their troubles and from all care, and sorrow” (Alma 40:11–12).

As I continued to read about the Resurrection, a glow came to the young man’s face and a smile graced his lips. As I concluded my visit, I said good-bye to this sweet family.

I next saw the wife and children at the funeral. I think back to that night when a young man pleaded for truth and, from the Book of Mormon, heard the answer to his question.

When my Dad died a while back, the LDS Church allowed us to use their facilities for the funeral even though my Dad was not a member. A non denominational message was delivered and members of that Ward blessed our family in so many ways. For those who don't know, LDS members who serve in various capacities are all volunteers, as in no paid clergy.

There are so many good things about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints - and it is sad when we are misunderstood and lied about.

This talk by President Monson blessed me and I wanted to share it with you. Thank you.

it is sad when we are misunderstood and lied about

The tenacity, and viciousness against Mormons is quite disapponting.
The exclusive expertise claimed by non-members is quite laughable.

“and it is sad when we are misunderstood and lied about. “

Lying is always wrong.

What kind of lies have been told?

When you accuse, “The tenacity, and viciousness against Mormons” are you referring to the people or the ISM?

Even Good people can be devoutly wrong.

It is not the people of the lds I disagree with it is the doctrine and claims made against what I do believe that I disagree with.

Not sure, but it ain’t the Old Testament, the New Testament, and the Apocrypha.

I would sincerely like to know what lies exactly are being told about the LDS church. Their theology? Here on FR? What ....

“and it is sad when we are misunderstood and lied about.”

Can you expand on that? Most of what I know about the mormon religion I learned on FR and watching South Park. Not too sure those are objective sources.

Oh yeah, one other source was my first Christian Pastor, who was raised mormon and then found and accepted Christ at the age of 27. He seemed to know a thing or two about your religion but again, him being a former member, I can see where his opinion might have been clouded.

I’d be happy to see you post a vanity maybe, pointing out what these misunderstandings and lies are. Or, if you would prefer, I am open to FReepmailing with you about the subject.

Be advised, due to the information that I already have, I do have a biased view of your religion but will try not to be mean, abusive or derisive of you personally.

I am not interested in becoming mormon, I love my Chistian faith too much for that, but like I told a Buddhist friend of mine, I want to know WHY people believe WHAT they believe, no matter what that is.

It is sad when the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints slander the Catholics, Baptists, Methodists, Lutherans, Presbyterians, Anglicans, et al, by saying their beliefs are corrupted and false.

Tenacious is no insult, as far as vicious I will say this It is best to point out the facts and let them speak more than to slander or insult “res ipsa loquitur”

I have taken one of the lds leaders at his word, that many on the lds find this to be unpleasent is sad. You call people investagtors when lds try to presuade them to join the lds but seem to only want a very shallow and guided investagion.

“Convince us of our errors of Doctrine, if we have any, by reason, by logical arguments, or by the Word of God and we will ever be grateful for the information and you will ever have the pleasing reflections that you have been instruments in the hands of God of redeeming your fellow beings.” LDS Apostle, Orson Pratt - The Seer, p. 15

Logical Errors abound NONE of the historical claims of the lds have any serious provenience and many are easily refuted.

Word of God . The new testament is replete with warnings of new and differing gospels (that means good news) and with the exception of the KJV all of the lds standard works are quite novel and new.

I am sorry that some are mean spirited but that does not mean I or others should ignore the words of Jude “ Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.”

If I fail to also follow Jude’s admonition to do so with compassion I apologize and hope to do better.

“keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. And of some have compassion, making a difference:And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.”

And yet, your peurile giraffe posts in response to the many factual posts are supposed to, somehow, indicate that you are knowledgeable?

It is but to laugh.

Credibility? What credibility do YOU bring to the fray oh daoist one?

Yet, you are perfectly content to smear and ridicule Christians contending for their faith in response to the deliberate and intentional mormon lies about Christianity.

Hypocrisy, pure and simple.

I have over 21 years of dealings with the mormon religion and members. That is my so called “exclusive expertise”.

What have you?

Some type of fetish that involves posting giraffe pictures, nothing else.

What's a triple combination?

I think it's the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price bound together in one book.

Hebrews 9:27

“And as it is appointed unto man once to die, and after this the judgment.”

Everyone doesn’t go go happy land. Only those that are truly born again.

The triple combination contains the Bible (KJV), the Book of Mormon and Doctrine & Covenants. Thanks for asking.

"Precious Promises of the Book of Mormon"?

Too bad the Salt Lake version of the LDS church long ago abandoned the doctrines of the BOM and chased after the fantasies that Joseph Smith dreamed up after he wrote the BOM instead. That's the problem when you have an "evolving prophet".

It seems rzman21 wants the Catholics and Protestants to go after each other in order to make Mormonism expectable. Something the devil would to.
