Are dinosaurs fossils really that old? [vanity]

Posted on 10/28/2011 6:39:41 AM PDT by Ancient Drive

I read that carbon dating method is only accurate for up to 30,000 yrs. So how are scientists coming up with millions yrs. old fossils? For all we know dinosaurs died off not millions but 100's of thousands of yrs ago.

Come now, this is a high-class establishment here. The word you're looking for is "Coprolites."

Sorry. I'm an ignorant brute.

Correct, much of it is written by many, some unknown,King James edited it, and shoved down our throats as absolute truth.

Well done mnehring! Best description of radiometric isotopic dating I have seen at FR.

Dino fossils are dated by the rock layers the fossils are found in. The rock layers are dated by the fossils they contain. If this seems like circular reasoning to you, that is because it is circular reasoning.

Fossil containing sedimentary rock layers are rarely dated directly. Rocks that can be dated via radiometric dating must be either igneous (volcanic) or metamorphic (geologically altered through partial melting and high pressure conditions). Scientists date such rocks above and below the fossil containing layers in order to confine the date of the fossils.

Thats expected, and as usual I’m not disappointed.

But that does not change the truth of the Bible.

I won’t argue with you because I know from experience no matter what I say it will not change your opinion. God is minimized when your view of him is limited to a Earth centered viewpoint. I like to think of him being bigger than that. Somehow I doubt he’ll be upset with me if I think more of him than what was written by a man a couple of thousand years ago (with little understanding of time/space).

Next thing you know RoadApple will be claiming the earth was really flat at one point as the early Church believed but made it spherical once the humans got wise to him.

It is held out as truth, I see no throat shoving, though that WILL come in the faith-vacuum being created. The shoving will involve the Koran and you’ll probably wish for better days.

Is it possible that God created the earth “old”? I mean, when He created it, maybe it came chock full of dinosaur bones, fossils, petrified trees, and the whole nine yards... The bottom line is that God created the heavens and the earth and all that is in them. He created man in His own image and likeness. Man sinned and needed a savior. Jesus came, lived among us, was crucified, died, and rose again to save us. Timelines…? …not much to get hung up about. God’s creation is fascinating, though.

I only claim the truth of what God says. No where does it say the earth is flat, so why claim it.

Try sticking to facts.

Prochronic

A wonderfully backwards idea proposed by the Victorian natural historian Philip Henry Gosse in response to the growing evidence from archaeology that the Earth was much older than the 4000 years that were recorded in the Bible.

Gosse’s idea was that God would have created the Earth 4000 years ago with the appearance that it was much older, in fact he would have had to create it that way.

A chicken in the Garden of Eden would have been created whole, but a biologist studying it might infer that it had been hatched from an egg many months before. Those illusory months are prochronic, outside of time, as opposed to the diachronic passing of time the chicken had experienced since its actual creation.

The problem with Gosse’s theory is that it is actually radically skeptical: no evidence could ever overthrow it. In fact, Gosse’s theory was given a strange kind of boost by Bertrand Russell who concluded from arguments of entropy that it is most likely the universe was created a second ago.

Some paleontologists date the rocks where the fossils are found.
Other paleontologists date the fossils where the rocks are found.
Still other paleontologists date Helen Thomas and just asked her.......

Perhaps He didn’t do what you think though?

As you said, it’s a matter of faith. Especially since none of it can be proven, and since we both agree that God can do anything, maybe we’re both right, or wrong?
