US bishops’ conference strongly criticizes CCHD critics
Catholic World News ^ | 11/8/11

Posted on 11/08/2011 5:14:06 AM PST by markomalley

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) is offering unusually strong and public criticism of critics of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), the USCCB’s controversial anti-poverty program.

“Despite significant progress, some things don’t change,” said Bishops Jaime Soto and Stephen Blaire in a memo to all US bishops. “The American Life League continues to attack CCHD and the USCCB. Judie Brown, Michael Hichborn and the American Life League (ALL) continue to recycle allegations that CCHD funds many organizations that are in conflict with Catholic teaching.”

“In one case, a clear violation occurred after the grant was approved and CCHD funding was swiftly and completely terminated,” they added. “We expressed our appreciation for this information. However, other ALL allegations are without substance … Frankly, in these areas we rely on the judgment of the local bishop and diocese, not the repeated accusations of those with clear ideological and ecclesial agendas.”

In its “Response to Recent Attacks on CCHD,” the USCCB added:

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) has been repeatedly attacked by Judie Brown, Michael Hichborn and the American Life League (ALL) for several years … CCHD disagree[s] with ALL’s efforts to accuse groups of violating CCHD guidelines based on web searches and without any contact with the groups or dioceses.

Groups which work on legitimate issues were listed as “partners” or “members” of another organization which allegedly took actions in conflict with Catholic teaching. The CCHD funded group had never agreed to be a partner nor was a member of the other organization and had not participated in the development of an offending policy and was not even aware of the position that they were alleged to support …

Other allegations involve identification of CCHD funded groups with positions of a national organization where the position in conflict with Catholic teaching was the action of an individual staff member who acted without approval or authorization of the organization (for example, adding the organization’s name to material which appeared on the web.) This raises issues of accountability within the other organization (which CCHD does not fund), but does not involve CCHD funded groups in violation of our guidelines or contract.

“They issue a very sweeping blanket dismissal of the report, never once addressing the specifics,” said Michael Hitchborn, media director of the American Life League. “They don't go into any of the information we have in our report. They just say, 'It's wrong,'" he said.”

“We would go over and over and over our facts, but they didn't really have any answers for us,” he added. “What we told the bishops and what we told CCHD is, 'Look, we're not out here to give the Catholic Church a bloody nose. We're out here to help the church maintain the Catholic identity of this program.”

The problem with CCHD is not the pro-abortion, pro-homosexual organizations they give to. The problem is that the organizations promote violation of the 10th Commandment...the entire purpose of the drive.

No Catholic who believes Catholic Dogma will donate one red cent to CCHD. Now or ever.

Amen. Let’s pray that the eyes of all of our bishops be opened.

Ran into a homeless guy downtown, asking for a handout for food.

I offered to buy him food and he insisted on money.

When I told him I was concerned he might use the money for booze instead of food, he assured me, “Oh, no...I’ll put it right here in my food money pocket....this is my booze money pocket....I won’t put it in there...”

CCHD needs to transform their “guidelines” into firm rules and policy, substantiated by audits.

Huh?

That is exactly right.

Even if the groups passed the "moral purity" test, the program would still encourage covetousness. That is its root problem, no matter how allegedly "moral" the group supposedly is.

Read up on the CCHD guidelines if you question this.

First reassurance, and now criticism, by the usual suspects. You know what, my dear bishops, how about informing us with the EXACT AMOUNT of your PERSONAL contribution to the CCHD.

The bishops are always more than willing (like our dear, dear President and the Federal government) to tell us how WE ought to be spending our money.

Bishops, most of us are smart enough to figure out which Catholic charities are the most worthy recipients of OUR OWN MONEY. Disband CCHD and use the saved funding for Catholic purposes. Stop trying to mimic the Feds!

The Bishops can criticize all they want - I could say something to them about allowing cafeteria catholics who support abortion, etc., to receive communion - but this Catholic will not be giving to CCHD - period.

They SHOULD use unusualy strong and public criticism where appropriate.

It’s just not appropriate to use it against pro-abortion catholic candidates and pro-homosexual marriage catholic candidates during and after elections.

So what’s the matter with Brown and ALL? Are they anti-abortion and pro-sacremental marriage or something? That certainly deserves criticism, unusually strong AND public.

Pelosi, Biden, Kennedy legacy...all safe.

Sounds like the Porn Publishing in Germany. Consistent.

When it comes to matters of faith and morals, I will follow the bishops. CCHD is another story. CCHD is worse, overall, AFTER the 2009 guidelines were changed. AND, no group has been cut off of funding that doesn’t meet those guidelines. Also, Although they have, within their contracts for recipients, the ability to take back donated money in the form of property, they have failed to do so at any time. No money from my family will go to CCHD. I can always find good causes(Birthright comes to mind). CCHD is contrary to Church teachings, lies to the bishops, AND EVERYONE, LAY OR RELIGIOUS, WORKING THERE MUST BE CANNED!

Want evidence? Go youtube last week’s vortex episodes, see the attached independent reports. Those are the easiest ones to find.

The bishops' reaction is typical for modernist heretics. Lay people exposing disobedience to Catholic faith and morals are told to shut up for the sake of obedience to human authority. That is not Catholic and these shepherds and hirelings.

Book Of Deuteronomy [19] But if thou forget the Lord thy God, and follow strange gods, and serve and adore them: behold now I foretell thee that thou shalt utterly perish. [20] As the nations, which the Lord destroyed at thy entrance, so shall you also perish, if you be disobedient to the voice of the Lord your God.

Left-Wing Radicalism in the Church: CCHD and ACORN

http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=34070

Excerpt:

The late William E. Simon, a Catholic who served as U.S. Treasury Secretary during the Nixon and Ford administrations (1974-1977), complained in the late 1980s that CCHD was a “funding mechanism for radical left-wing political activism in the United States, rather than for traditional types of charities.” According to Catholic writer Paul Likoudis, CCHD was created near the end of Saul Alinsky’s life specifically to serve as a permanent source of funding for his Industrial Areas Foundation. As such, Likoudis describes CCHD as “a political mechanism bonding the American Church to the welfare state.”

Excerpt2:

What Took CCHD So Long?

ACORN misbehavior is well-documented, and it’s been going on for years. The group choreographs sit-ins to force banks to lend to high-risk borrowers. It buses schoolchildren to the Nation’s Capital to demonstrate against tax cuts. It sends mobs to shout down conservative speakers. It raises the dead and leads them to voting booths.

Parishioners at Queen of Apostles Church in Alexandria, Va., were informed in the church bulletin that in the 1990s the CCHD had given money “to organizations diametrically opposed to the Catholic Church, i.e. the pro-abortion group National Organization for Women and the American Civil Liberties Union.” CCHD reportedly stopped funding those abortion groups after a church revolt years ago.

Anita MonCrief, a Washington, D.C.-area Catholic and former ACORN employee who personally witnessed ACORN abuses from the inside, was delighted that CCHD finally came to its senses.

“I’ve been a Catholic all my life and I’ve been a little disturbed it took them so long to realize what was happening with ACORN,” MonCrief said. “ACORN and its shenanigans have been in the news since 2000 and they should have known.”

THE ANTI-PRIESTS
(Communism in the Church)

WORLD TRENDS - December 1972

Excerpt:
The reason we are relating this story is to reveal that, as early as 1938, there were over one thousand Communist agents ordained as Catholic priests or studying for the priesthood. They formed an efficient network of Anti-Priests whose main function was the infiltration, subversion and control of the Catholic press and Publishing Houses with the aid of Soviet money.

Excerpt2:

Hearing that Pope John had appointed a commission to draw the schemas of the forthcoming Council, I immediately started to work on counter-schemas with the help of avant-garde theologians who had been won over to our way of thinking. Thanks to my contacts I managed to obtain copies of the projected papal schemas; they were terrible! I was in a cold sweat! If these schemas are carried, my work of 20 years will have been in vain. (11). I hastily put the finishing touch to my counter-schemas, and I circulated them. Eventually, they were tabled in the Council. (12). Thanks to the cooperation of some bishops whose thinking had been conditioned previously, the majority of bishops, reactionary but ill-prepared, were completely disconcerted by the highly efficient and coherent interventions of our friends; most of my counter-schemas were carried...”

“But I am not satisfied: many of my schemas, although they were accepted, have been watered down by Pope Paul himself in contempt of the majority vote at the Council. Fortunately, the revised versions contain many ambiguities; in this manner, it will be possible to initiate further changes, alleging that they are in the spirit of the Council. At any rate, Pope Paul is a progressive and a humanist; it should not be difficult to manipulate him and obtain sweeping changes in the near future. However, we must begin to work for Vatican III even now. Vatican III, as I see it, will mean the destruction of the Church and the death of God... Then, I shall come forward, not to nail Christ upon His Cross, but God Himself into His coffin.”

You don't seem to get the message that I have not the slightest interest in your schismatic propaganda posing as Catholicism. You should get out more and develop an actual social life, far, far away from Marcel's nasty little schism.

Your projection onto Catholics of some sort of sympathy for CCHD is entirely misplaced. OTOH, there is certainly nothing whatsoever for the schismatic SSPX to do that would be taken seriously to undermine CCHD. Only Catholics (the actual kind in communion with the Holy See) have standing in that argument. We don't listen to Jehovah's Witnesses or Unitarian Universalists on the subject either. Like SSPX, they have no standing.

Exactly. As long as the NCCB continues to support organizations like CCHD and the other anti-American, anti-Life groups, they will NEVER have a shred of credibility with real Catholics.

When one who identifies with the SSPX schism posts repeated attacks on the Catholic Church and its leaders, then that has to do with SSPX.

How is criticism of modernism an attack upon the Catholic Church? Anyone who knowingly defends modernism is not Catholic.

Your erroneous charges against the SSPX indicate that you have broken with the pope and his cardinals.

I went to the RealCatholic TV Youtube page, did a search for CCHD, and found the relevant videos. However I did not find the "attached independent reports" you mentioned. I need the most accessible and credible stuff out there to send to my pastor and my diocesan P&J guy --- who are both strongly prolife, pro-family, and who I am convinced would call a halt to CCHD fundraising within the Parish and the Diocese --IF they were well-convinced of the facts of the case.

I just can't wrap my head around why Bp Jaime Soto is stonewalling this. Once again, I find myself thinking, "Bone-Deep Corrupt or Turkey Stupid?" Bp Soto has come out strong, publicly and undiplomatically strong, against Same-Sex Marriage. Has held prayer vigils at the Sacramento abortuaries. Has rufffled a lot of feathers doing it. I had hoped he'd be one of the good ones.

I already sent my pastor Fr. William Most's analysis.

What else would you recommend?
