An 81-year-old Catholic priest, expelled from the priesthood because he lives with his 85-year-old girlfriend, says he will take his case to the European Court of Human Rights if necessary, Trouw reports on Tuesday.

Jan Peijnenburg, who has lived with his girlfriend for 46 years, was sent a letter at the weekend telling him he has been suspended because he refuses to leave his partner.

According to Trouw, the suspension will have little effect because Peijnenburg is retired and only rarely fulfills church duties.

I’m not Catholic, but it seems to me if your employer puts conditions on your employment, well, you should abide by them if you want to remain employed.

Yeah it’s hard to suspend a retired person.

lol

I’m on the priest’s side. he picked one woman and stayed with her for 46 years. That’s better than many that pass as priests.

That would open a whole big can of worms if the EU Court of Human Rights ruled that the Church can not prevent priests in EU Countries from marrying and can't take any retaliatory action against them if they do.

The mere fact that she wasn't a 13 year-old boy puts him ahead of some priests.

They should just be happy he is living with a girl. Of course, if he had been living with a dude, the Vatican wouldn’t have had the testicular fortitutde to even protest and had they done so, the European Human Rights wiennies would have beach slapped the pope.

Wow he lived with her for the past 46 years and the Church is just now getting around to taking care of this? My guess is that a new, relatively orthodox bishop was just installed.

In any case, another fruit of Vatican2 - how else could he have gotten away with this for 46 years?

Since he’s taking it to EU Court, maybe they can use this opportunity to “correct” other aspects of Catholc doctrine - like gay “marriage”, female “priestesses”, birth control, etc.

As the structure and leadership of the Church will come under greater attacks from political authorities, it will be the responsibility of the laity to hold firm and reject this man.

Allowing it to go on for 46 years, then sacking him when he's in his 80s - that's not better. If they let it go on this long, I fail to see why the church suddenly finds this to be a problem. Maybe they didn't want to pay his retirement?

“85-year-old girlfriend”

If she’s 85 years old, I think it’s a bit overdue to call her a “GIRL”friend.

And I’d say much more than a “friend”. Concubine? Mistress?

I’m one of the more ‘Catholic friendly’ Protestants here on FR, having studied it professionally, attended Catholic school as a child, etc. However, the fact that this priest was open about it and it went 46 years before it was addressed SCREAMS the need for clerical reform in the Holy Mother Church as a whole ala Gregory VII and his reforms including not allowing priests to live outside of communities.

AFA this ‘priest’, he stopped being a priest when he broke his vows. Like it or not, celibacy is part of being a priest and he took vows, when he broke those vows he ceased being a priest, IMO.
