Exciting New Archaeological Evidence Uncovered Could be the Site of Biblical Sodom
Breaking Christian News ^ | December 12, 2011 | Brian Nixon

"It may be too early to say, but initial evidence points towards a large-scale destruction from a catastrophic event. I say this because, in that area, the skeletal remains were traumatized by an east-to-west directional event, demonstrating that the catastrophe came from a particular compass point." –Dr. Collins

snip

Dr. Collins and his team began digging at a new site [last year], Tall el-Hammam, which corresponded to several factors. Dr. Collins summarized the end result: "To start with, the Tall el-Hammam site has twenty-five geographical indicators that align with the description in Genesis. Compare this with something well known—like Jerusalem—that has only sixteen. Other sites have only five or six. So this site has a greater number of indicators than any other Old Testament site. That is truly amazing.

snip

"It began three years ago when we found some skeletal remains. Like many archaeological sites, we didn't mention the find publicly because of the potential problems involved with such remains. However, with these recent finds, we had to say something because it was so monumental."

I had a professor in college try to tell us one time that God destroyed Sodom because the inhabitants treated the angelic visitors poorly. I corrected her and told her it was destroyed because of the homosexuality that was pervasive there. She was absolutely floored by my statement and vehemently tried to discount what I had said. I then said, “Where do you think the word ‘sodomy’ comes from? “ She kicked me out of the class for the rest of the day. Wasn’t the last time she kicked me out either. I had her for 2 other classes and got A’s in all of them !

Yep they wanted them for sex

What floored me was Lot offered them his daughters (which they turned down)--nice father

Pyroclastic ash flow. White hot glass moving from the eruption sight at the speed of sound.

That would explain the account of Lott's wife being turned into a pillar of salt.

My guess is she actually turned around and returned to the city and died with the rest of the inhabitants of the region.

Interesting but hardly proof that this site was Sodom.

There are probably a number of sites that would be marked as an event that people suffered horrible deaths.

Until they find something that definitively marks this site as Sodom we just don't know.

Yes - “treated poorly”

They were demanding the angels be handed over to them for certain purposes.

The story has new meaning for me ever since my Mom, driving West on 66 near Washington, turned back to look upon the Wicked City.

She didn’t turn into a pillar of salt, she turned into a phone pole. But in any case she completely wrecked our 1969 Mercury Marquis convertible.

The Sumerian word for salt also described the vapor rising from the salt marshes. She was turned into a pillar of vapor makes more sense.

Lots of the Bible has misleading statements like this due to translation errors.

Any pillar of salt found outside of town?

In my younger days (in the 50s) I read a story in Saturday Evening Post or similar in the dentist's waiting room. The archaeologists were headed into town late in the day after excavations somewhere around the Dead Sea. During their explorations that week they had found a beautiful life sized white statue of a woman and had loaded her into the back of their pickup truck. They found a place to eat & while they were occupied there, a heavy rainstorm came up. After it was over, they went back out & found that their statue was gone.

Very interesting. I still remember the illustration of the pillar of salt in the Sunday school book I had as a child. Of course they were a little vague about why the city was so evil also!

Anyone remember the SciFi short story about two guys stealing a statue, seemingly made of alabaster, which they were transporting in the back of a lorry with a canvas top? The statue was of a young woman, vaguely Mediterranean or Semitic in appearance, who was looking back over her left shoulder in apprehension & sorrow. As they drove on through the rain that night they discussed who the sculptor might be, what the status was worth and the best way to “fence” it.

When they stopped the next morning and cheeked the back of the lorry, the statue was completely gone. The tailgate was still latched. All that was left was about 6 inches of water sloshing in the truck bed, having leaked through the ragged canvas tarp. For some unknown reason, the driver stuck his finger in the water and then into his mouth....SALTY!

Thanks GiovannaNicoletta! I was going to post something about this today (or look for prior topics) after viewing a YouTube iteration of a short piece about this. I hooked up my disk player to broadband, and have been watching free streams for the past week.

Steven Collins ignores the fact that the Vale of Siddim, where the Cities of the Plain (or as he notes, "kirkar") were located is described in Genesis as "that is, the Salt Sea", because the terrain where the cities had been is now under the Dead Sea. He's correct in his rejection of the southern locations proposed in the 1930s, but he tries to find the sites on dry land, which is the same mistake made back then.

He's also, most amusingly, finding that the strata have nothing intervening to cover a 600 year long gap -- not surprisingly, the same figure that Velikovsky points out as having made it into the conventional pseudochronology.

To all -- please ping me to other topics which are appropriate for the GGG list.

Well, perhaps you ought to reference it because the Hebrew says *salt* as in the white powdery stuff.

If you're going to make authoritative statements about Scripture, you really ought to research them and back them up before you go attributing error to Scripture.

Your version may be closer to the original, but my memory associates reading it with the dental office & he didn’t have science fiction magazines. My brother had those. Would be interesting if the story is still to be found.

I'm aware of the "salt/vapor" translation error as well. One of my favorites has always been, from Matthew, "It is easier for a "gamla" (in the original Aramaic) to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven." In Aramaic the word "gamla" means both "camel" and "thick rope", depending on the context, but spelled exactly the same.

one interesting thing I saw no elaboration on was speculation on the nature of the directional event. How many directional events can you get in jordan? An impact is the only natural cause I can think of, maybe an airburst event like Tugunska or however the russian location is spelled?

Thanks, that a new one for me. Whenever I run across nuggets like these, I am reminded of the old story of how a professor lined up some students and told the first one a couple of sentences. He was instructed to pass it on, and so on down the line. When the last person was told to repeat the sentences, the entire meaning had changed.

The wife just came in and I told her about your camel/thick rope comment and what I was replying. She said that when she used to sell Tupperware at the parties, they played that game - with the same results. "It always came out different". So just imagine what translations, in addition to time, and the political bent of the translator would do.

Your elder sister is Samaria, who lived with her daughters to the north of you; and your younger sister, who lived to the south of you, is Sodom with her daughters. You not only followed their ways, and acted according to their abominations; within a very little time you were more corrupt than they in all your ways.

As I live, says the Lord GOD, your sister Sodom and her daughters have not done as you and your daughters have done. This was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy. They were haughty and did abominable things before me; therefore I removed them when I saw it.

Ezekiel 16:46-50

The five sites were mostly in what is now the northern basin of the Dead Sea, which is the only basin right now, the shallow southern basin dried up, as it did in or just before Roman times. The “little” town was on higher ground, and I think there’s a reference to its ruins in the OT somewhere when the Israelites were preparing to reenter Canaan. The kings who came from the east to beat their asses were led by the Elamite king Chedorlaomer (Kudur-Lagamar) and his vassal kings from areas he’d conquered, or his predecessors had conquered, and some of them were from what is now Iraq.
