Nigerian Bishops Call For Help to Fight Sect

LAGOS — An influential body grouping Nigeria's Catholic Bishops Saturday urged President Goodluck Jonathan to hire foreign crime experts to snuff out an Islamist sect blamed for hundreds of deaths.

"I call on Mr President to recall the retired experts in criminology and employ foreign experts in this field to assist the active security agents to put an immediate end to the Boko Haram menace," a statement said.

Boko Haram is believed to include different factions with varying aims, including those with political links as well as a hard-core Islamist cell that has drawn supporters from young people in the deeply impoverished north.

The president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria, Archbishop Felix Alaba Job, said in the statement: "This group has apparently declared war on Nigeria and at times of war nations call on their reserves.

"It is apparent that if we depend only on our available active security agents, we shall not make much progress," he said.

The sect has claimed responsibility for a spate of deadly bombings and gun attacks in the capital Abuja and several parts of the north, including the Christmas bombings of a Roman Catholic church outside the city, and elsewhere which claimed at least 49 lives.

Something lost in translation? Seems like an odd statement.

Christians have been talking about armed resistance there lately. I don’t know if this is even possible (do they have arms?) but in any case, it wouldn’t work, because the army itself is now infested with Islamists trained in Pakistan, although some of the officers are Yoruba, a theoretically Christian (Anglican) tribe. However, they seem to be pretty dhimmified.

One of the problems is that the three Christian groups in Nigeria - Anglican, Catholic and Evangelical/Pentecostal - are not united. The Muslim attacks are directed mostly at Catholics and, to a lesser extent, Evangelicals (simply because there are fewer Evangelicals there).

I don’t think, in any case, that Christians are in the position to seek out and destroy anybody. And, to make it worse, we all know whose side the US would take if civil war broke out...and it wouldn’t be the Christians, of whatever denomination.

In Catholic villages in Sumatra in Indonesia where the muslims burned down the houses and churches, the local Catholics took up AK-47 arms, raided the muslim villages, & burned down their houses. It`s been very quiet for 3 years now, not a peep out of the muslims.
It works.

The better thing would be to have both sides go their own seperate ways, just like what happened last year in regards to South Sudan, that is the northern and southern parts of Nigeria be divided up, civil war being prevented.

Somebody certainly is supplying the jihadis with weapons. Who are they? Is there a foreign jihadi organization or nation that is supporting this?

Our foreign policy depends on who the president is and who is in the State Department. Some in the State Department are liberals and some are conservative and there seems to be a civil war going on in our foreign policy depending on who is president. We need some private foreign policy/defense experts who will assist foreign nations in need of assistance from Islamic aggression, also Christian minorities.
